Jan Tschichold (2 April 1902 Leipzig, Ger-many – 11 August 1974 Locarno, Switzerland) was a typographer, book designer, teacher and writer. Tschichold had converted to Modernist design principles in 1923 after visiting the first Wei-mar Bauhaus exhibition. Between 1926 and 1929, he designed a “universal alphabet” to clean up the few multi graphs and non-phonetic spellings in the German language. For example, he devised brand new characters to replace the multi graphs ch and sch. His intentions were to change the spelling by sys-tematically replacing eu with oi, w with v, and z with ts. Long vowels were indicated by a macron below them, though the umlaut was still above. The alphabet was presented in one

typeface, which was sans-serif and without capital letters.

Stanley Morison (6 May 1889 – 11 October 1967) was a British

typographer, designer and historian of printing. He was one of the most influential type-designers of the

20th century, having designed the Times New Ro-man typeface (1931) and several historical revivals for

the Monotype Corporation. From 1923 to 1967 Morison was a typographic consultant for the Monotype Cor-

poration. In the 1920s and 1930s, his work at Monotype included research and adaptation of historic typefaces,

including the revival of the Baskerville, Blado (1923) and Bembo (1929) types. He pioneered the great expansion of

the company's range of typefaces, and hugely influenced the field of typography to the present day.

Jan van Krimpen (12 February 1892 in Gouda – 20 October 1958 in Haarlem) was a Dutch typographer and type designer. He worked for the printing house Koninklijke Joh. Enschedé. His type de-signs are elegant book typefaces, originally made for man-ual printing and the monotype machine. Although a good few have been digitised (Romulus, Haarlemmer, Spectrum), the typefaces are only rarely used in publications. Of special note is the Romulus 'superfamily', consisting of a seriffed font, a cursive, a chancery italic (Cancelleresca Bastarda), a sans-serif, and a Greek in a range of weights. Such an extensive family would have been a first, comparable to today's Scala fam-ily. The outbreak of the Second World War disrupted the project before completion. After the war, Van Krimpen was not interested in resuming it.

Adrian Frutiger (born May 24, 1928 in Unterseen, Canton of Bern, Switzerland) is a typeface designer who influenced the direction of digital typography in the second half of the 20th century and into the 21st. He is best known for creating the Univers and Frutiger typefaces. Adrian Frutiger's first commercial typeface was Président — a set of titling capital letters with small, bracketed serifs, released in 1954. A calligraphic, informal, script face, Ondine ("wave" in French), also was released in 1954. In 1955, Méridien, a glyphic, old-style, serif text face was released. The type-face shows inspiration by Nicholas Jenson, and, in the Méridien type, Frutiger's ideas of letter construction, unity, and organic form, are first expressed together. In 1956, he designed his first-of-three, slab-serif typefaces — Egyptienne, on the Clarendon model; after Univers, it was the second, new text face to be commissioned for photocomposition.

Warren Chappell (1904, Richmond, Virginia–1991, Charlottesville, Virginia) was an American illustrator, book and type designer, and author. He was a graduate of the University of Richmond, and then studied at the Art Students League of New York, under Boardman Robinson, where he later taught. After running his own studio in New York City for several years, Chappel trav-eled to Germany just before World War II to work at Stempel on the typeface Trajanus. He returned to the United States at the onset of the war, having seen only initial proofs. He first saw the completed typeface in Swedish de-sign magazines during the war. He later devoted himself to book design and illustration and was closely associated with the firm of Alfred A. Knopf for which he designed many books. He also did illustrations for Random House, Harper & Row, and Doubleday. He was typography consultant to both the Book of the Month Club and American Type Founders. His design for the E. P. Dutton re-issues of A. A. Milne's Winnie-the-Pooh books are considered to be particularly elegant.

Matthew Carter is probably the most widely read type designer in the world. His fonts, such as Ver-dana and Georgia, are on most people’s comput-ers. His newspaper faces, notably the great Miller family, are among the most widely used across the world. Turning 70 this year, Matthew Carter

has been in the business for five decades. During that time he has worked with virtually every type technology that has ever existed

Hermann Zapf (born November 8, 1918) is a German typeface designer who lives in Darmstadt, Germany. He is married to calligrapher and typeface designer Gudrun Zapf von Hesse. Zapf's work, which includes Palatino and Optima, has been widely copied, often against his will. The best known example may be Monotype's Book Antiqua, which shipped with Microsoft Office and was widely considered a "knockoff" of Palatino. In 1993, Zapf resigned from ATypI (Associa-tion Typographique Internationale) over what he viewed as its hypocritical atti-tude toward unauthorized copying by prominent ATypI members. Zapf designed types for various stages of printing technology, including hot metal composition, phototypesetting (also called "cold type"), and finally digital typography for use in desktop publishing. His two most famous typefaces, Palatino and Optima, were designed in 1948 and 1952, respectively. Palatino was designed in conjunction with August Rosenberger, with careful attention to detail. It was named after 16th century Italian writing master Giambattista Palatino. Optima, a flared sans-ser-if, was released by Stempel in 1958. Zapf disliked its name, which was invented by the marketers at Stempel.
