FIVE TYPES OF CHEMICAL REACTIONS
• COMBUSTION• SYNTHESIS• DECOMPOSITION• SINGLE DISPLACEMENT (aka “single
replacement”)• DOUBLE DISPLACEMENT (aka “double
replacement”)
WHAT TYPE IS IT?
• FIRST:• Is it COMBUSTION?
WHAT TYPE IS IT?
• SECOND:• If it’s not COMBUSTION, How do the
molecules split and combine?• Decomposition: One molecule splits into two
or more atoms or molecules• Synthesis: One molecule is made from two or
more atoms or molecules
WHAT TYPE IS IT?
• THIRD:• If it’s not COMBUSTION, DECOMPOSITION, OR
SYNTHESIS, How do the molecules split and combine?
• If a one part of a molecule is “pushed out” and replaced, then left all alone, it’s SINGLE DISPLACEMENT.
• If two pairs of molecules switch partners, it’s DOUBLE DISPLACEMENT.
