Extended family

Three or more generations living together

e.g. grandparents, parents and children

Could also include uncles, aunts and their children

Single parent family

One parent and their dependant children

Household

Two or more persons living together but are not related

i.e. flatmates or a care home

No strong physical or emotional ties

Also known as a compound family

Reconstituted family

Adults separate from previous relationships and come together in a

new relationship bringing any children with them

Same sex family

Two adults of the same gender who are in a relationship and who may have

children
