Purpose$Pro%lem$&uestion

•  To determine ho' the rate ofphotosynthesis 'ill change in relationto dierent types of 'hite light(

-ntroduction

• Originally, our e"periment 'as designed around 30e or si"types of light( But after 3nding pre0ious e"periments onthose topics, 'e 'ere left to change our e"periment( Afterresearching, 'e found an e"periment that 'ould %e

appropriate( 1hat kind of light is %est for photosynthesisin plants( .lorescent, -ncandescent, or *atural Sunlight(Our hypothesis 'as that *atural Sunlight 'ould 'ork the%est4 after all, the oldest land plant 'as around 567million years ago( Then 'e thought +orescent light 'ould

%e second %est, %ecause it8s 9uality is %etter than that ofincandescent light( -ncandescent light, 'e thought, 'ouldyield the least amount of photosynthesis, it is almost theopposite of 9uality :plantlight;(

Procedure

>( La% Procedure# Take one of your t'o card%oard %o"es and cut a small hole in the top, %ig enough to 3tyour light %ul%(

6( Attach the .luorescent light to the top of the card%oard %o" in 'hiche0er 'ay necessary ?'e used ducttape so that no outside light enters the %o"(

@( Repeat steps > and 6 'ith your second card%oard %o" e"cept 'ith the incandescent %ul% instead of the+uorescent %ul%(

5( To collect data, you 'ill need to %e a%le to plug your sensor into your computer( To do so, do'nloadLogger Pro 0@(@ onto your computer and use the GoLink  con0erter to plug the sensor into thecomputer(

7( Remo0e one leaf from the pea plant and place it in the O"ygen Das Sensor 2ham%er

( Place the cham%er in the card%oard %o" 'ith the .luorescent light 'ith the light turned o( ?make surethere is no light in the cham%er

E( Let the leaf stay in the dark for e"actly 5 minutes to pre0ent any photosynthesis for occurring(

F( 1hen the 5 minutes are done, turn the light on(

G( Let the leaf sit in the light for 5 minutes and record the o"ygen output 'ith your O"ygen Das Sensor(

>C(Repeat steps 7G 'ith the -ncandescent light(>>(.or the sunlight test, take either card%oard %o" and place it outside in the sun(

>6(Place the cham%er in the card%oard %o" 'ith the light turned o(

>@(Lea0e the leaf ?inside the cham%er in the dark for 5 minutes(

>5(1hen the 5 minutes are done, remo0e the card%oard %o", place the leaf in the sun, and %egincollecting data(

>7(Record the o"ygen output of the leaf for 5 minutes(

>(2ompare data to see 'hich light allo's the most o"ygen output(

Analysis

• As most plants gro' under sunlight, this is 'hat they use forphotosynthesis( One of the main

%yproducts of photosynthesis iso"ygen( 1e decided that measuringthe rate of photosynthesis 'ould %e

easiest %y measuring ho' mucho"ygen 'as produced 'hen the plant'as under the dierent lights(

2onclusion

-n conclusion, 'e found that photosynthesisin our plants 'as most positi0e 'hen under+orescent light( 1e predicted that +orescent

'ould %e second to sunlight, %ut ahead ofincandescent( Our actual results 'ere#

>( Sunlight 'as %est for photosynthesis(

6( .lorescent %eing the second %est for

photosynthesis(@( -ncandescent sho'ed a steady decline in

photosynthesis(
