Simple Sentence
A simple sentence, also called an independent clause, contains a subject and a verb, and it expresses a complete thought.
Compound Sentence
A compound sentence contains two or more independent clauses joined by a coordinator.
Coordinators:
a. FANBOYS (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so)
b. Semicolon (;)
c. Semicolon + conjunctive adverb + comma
Example
I went to Los Angeles for spring break; I had a great time.
I went to Los Angeles for spring break, and I had a great time.
I went to Los Angeles for spring break; undoubtedly, I had a great time.

Complex Sentence
A complex sentence has an independent clause joined by one or more dependent clauses.
Commonly seen dependent clauses:
a. Adjective clauses- look for relative pronoun
b. Adverb clauses- look for subordinating conjunction
Example
When I got to the airport, my cousin was waiting for me.
My cousin, who I do not get to see often, was very excited to see me.

Compound-Complex
A compound-complex sentence has two or more independent clauses joined by one or more dependent clauses.
Combines the elements of compound sentences and complex sentences
Example
Because it was so nice outside, we went to the beach; however, the water was too cold to swim in.
