Abstract Art Abstract art is often confused with non-objective art. Abstract art contains recognizable subjects, but these subjects do not look real. Characteristics:

• Recognizable subjects • Colors are not realistic • Sometimes simplified (like cartoons) • Subjects look strange or not real

Examples: • Cubism- Pablo Picasso • Folk art • Surrealism- Salvador Dali

Non-Objective Art or Pure Abstraction

Non-Objective art is art that has no recognizable subject. “No Object” can be interpreted as meaning that the artwork does not attempt to represent anything from real life. Non-objective art, or pure abstraction, is often very open to interpretation by the viewer. Characteristics:

texture, space, and value • Often more simple

Artist trading cards  Artist Trading Cards or ATCs are small cards measuring 2 ½” x 3 ½” that many artists create to exchange with other artists or collectors. These cards are the same size as baseball or Pokémon cards. An artist will create the small work of art using a particular medium such as drawing pencil, paint, or mixed media. The card is usually one sided and signed on the back. Artists trade these cards at galleries, meetings, classes, and even through the mail. Many artists even sell these cards to prospective collectors. Purpose: To demonstrate your understanding of the differences between realistic, abstract, and non-objective art. To demonstrate your current understanding of art skills learned in previous classes to inform future instruction. Directions: Create three different artist trading cards that use the three types of art. One card will be show a realistic artwork, one card will show an abstract artwork, and one card will show a non-objective artwork. The medium will be colored pencils, drawing pencils, and markers. Use the pre-cut 2 ½ x 3 ½ tagboard cards to create your three artist trading cards. BEFORE YOU CREATE YOUR FINAL ARTIST TRADING CARDS, SKETCH 3 IDEAS FOR YOUR OWN ATCS IN THE SPACE BELOW:
