Roof Trusses

Trusses are Triangular Frame Works, consisting of Axially Loaded Members

They are More Efficient in Resisting ExternalThey are More Efficient in Resisting ExternalLoads as the Cross Section of all the membersare Nearly Uniformly Stressed

They are Extensively used for Larger Spans

Applications

Trusses are used in

Roofs of Single Storey Industrial Buildings

Long Span Floors and Roofs Of MultistoryBuildings, to resist gravity loadsBuildings, to resist gravity loads

Trusses are also used in Walls and HorizontalPlanes of Industrial Buildings to resist LateralLoads and to provide Lateral Stability

Analysis of Trusses

• Truss members are regarded as being pinnedjoints.

• They are assumed to be joined together so asto transfer only the axial forces and notto transfer only the axial forces and notmoments and shears from one member tothe adjacent members

• The loads are assumed to be acting only at thenodes of the trusses.

Analysis of Trusses

The trusses may be provided over

• a single span, simply supported over the twoend supports, in which case they are usuallystatically determinate.statically determinate.

• Such trusses can be analyzed manually by– method of joints

– method of sections.

• Computer programs are also available for theanalysis of trusses.

Types of Roof Truss

• Pitched roof trusses

• Parallel chord trusses

• Trapezoidal trusses

Pitched Roof Trusses

Most common types of roof trusses

Top chord is provided with a slope in orderto facilitate natural drainage of rainwaterand clearance of dust/snow accumulation.and clearance of dust/snow accumulation.

The typical span to maximum depth ratios

of pitched roof trusses are in the range of 4

to 8, the larger ratio being economical in

longer spans.

Pitched Roof Trusses

• These trusses have a greater depth at themid-span. Due to this even though theoverall bending effect is larger at mid-span,the chord member and web member stressesthe chord member and web member stressesare smaller closer to the mid-span and largercloser to the supports.

Pratt Truss (6-30m)

• In Pratt trusses [Fig. (a)] web members arearranged in such a way that under gravity loadthe longer diagonal members are under tensionand the shorter vertical members experiencecompression.compression.

• This allows for efficient design, since the shortmembers are under compression.

• However, the wind uplift may cause reversal ofstresses in these members and nullify thisbenefit.

Howe Truss (6-10m)

• The converse of the Pratt is the Howe truss[Fig. (b)]. This is commonly used in lightroofing so that the longer diagonalsexperience tension under reversal of stressesexperience tension under reversal of stressesdue to wind load.

Fink Trusses(up to 10m)

• Fink trusses [Fig. (c)] are used for longer spanshaving high pitch roof,

• The web members in such truss are sub-divided to obtain shorter members.divided to obtain shorter members.

Fan Trusses (10-15m)

• Fan trusses [Fig. (d)] are used when the raftermembers of the roof trusses have to be sub-divided into odd number of panels.

Page 21: TYPES OF STEEL ROOF TRUSSES · 2020. 3. 20. · Roof Trusses Trusses are Triangular Frame Works, consistingofAxiallyLoadedMembers They are MoreEfficientinResistingExternal LoadsastheCrossSectionofallthemembers

Fink Fan Truss (20-30m)

• A combination of fink and fan [Fig. (e)] canalso be used to some advantage in somespecific situations requiring appropriatenumber of panels.number of panels.

Mansard Trusses(20-30m)

• Mansard trusses [Fig. (f)] are variation of finktrusses, which have shorter leading diagonalseven in very long span trusses, unlike the finkand fan type trusses.and fan type trusses.

Economical Span

• The economical span lengths of the pitchedroof trusses, excluding the Mansard trusses, range from 6 m to 12 m.

• The Mansard trusses can be used in the span• The Mansard trusses can be used in the spanranges of 12 m to 30 m.
