TYPHOON
TO: Mrs KennedyBY: Matthew LeVangie
What Is A Typhoon??
● A Typhoon is a large type of wind and water storm that can be up to 150km wide.
● They are called a Typhoon because they are created in the pacific ocean.
● An eye is created when winds exceed 150km/h.
● The eye is typically 10-20 km wide and is in the middle of the Typhoon.
Characteristics
● There are two directions the wind travels in a Typhoon clock wise and counter clockwise.
● If the Typhoon is North of the Equator it rotates counter clockwise.
● If the Typhoon is South of the Equator it rotates clockwise.
Size And Speed
● A typhoon can range from 1km to 16km above sea level but most don't exceed 10km.
● Typhoons are classified in 5 different levels based on wind speed:
● Level 1 is between 120 and 150 km/h● Level 2 is between 150 and 175 km/h● Level 3 is between 175 and 210 km/h● Level 4 is between 210 and 250 km/h● Level 5 is any speed higher then 250 km/h
When And Where
● In the Eastern Pacific the season for Typhoons is May 1st untill November 30th.
● The Northwestern Pacific Season is close to all year.
● The Central Pacific Season is June 1st untill November 30th .
How Many Per Year?
● The average amount of Typhoons per year in the Pacific Ocean is 25-30.
● That might not seem like a lot but in places like China and Southeast Asia who get hit many times a year it would be a lot.
Precipitation
● The most common type of precipitation is rain but in some parts of the world where it is colder you could get snow or even hail.
● The amount of rainfall you could receive is 30-600mm.
Philippians Typhoon
● Early November 2013 one of the most deadly Typhoons ever struck the coast of the Philippians. The destruction was catastrophic affecting millions and leaving over 500,000 people homeless.
● Over 10,000 people died during this storm and many more were severely injured.
● The typhoon started hundreds of kilometres off shore as a small tropical storm, in less than 12 hours it was classified as a category 5 Typhoon or a Super Typhoon.
Philippians Typhoon
● If the storm wasn’t bad enough it continued to intensify and at one point had winds blowing at 315km/h.
● The typhoon lasted over 3 days but the damage left behind (flooded roads, power outages, damaged and demolished houses) will be there for much longer.
● Over 1,000 people are still missing.
Safety Tips
● The most damage to your house will be from wind and water.
● To ensure the least amount of damage you should do little things like board up windows, check your shingles and take anything that might blow away indoors.
● For people and animals stay indoors no matter what. If you have relatives in a different location go with them during the storm.
● After the storm avoid any buildings that have been partly destroyed and avoid loose rubble
Disaster Kit
● A disaster kit is used for people who were just affected by a natural disaster to help them survive alone for a short period of time until someone can rescue them.
● Some of the things in a disaster kit are food, water, utility knife, flashlight, batteries, first aid kit, emergency blanket, whistle, matches and a manual can opener.
Where To Get A Kit
● Some kits can be bought all together but most people just make them by them self.
● The items in a kit can be bought at Canadian Tire or Walmart.
● Item like a flashlight, canned food, batteries, matches, whistle and a can opener only cost 2-10 $ each.
● The items like a first aid kit and a emergency blanket cost around 50 $ each
E,M,O info
● (e,m,o) stands for Emergency Measures Organization.
● The phone number for the E,M,O in Antigonish is (902) 863-8366
● The location of the E,M,O in Antigonish is on collage street
