Inspiration for feature seating and possible artwork

Use of recalimed ‘chopped wood’ timber as the dominant material for the proposed feature seating elements makes reference to the former Dunnings & Sons fuel supply business, a former landmark of Harp Junction (Ern Dunning pictured). Possible sculpture artwork (like 1883 above) or interperative signage on the feature seating could also inform of the history of the Harp of Erin Hotel as a centre for race meetings and a staging post for Cobb & Co. services to Lilydale during the Victorian gold rush era of the 1850’s.

HOW much wood would a woodcutter cut if a woodcutter had any wood? Ern Dunning would cut it all, but his Kew wood yard is empty because he's closing his doors.

Melbourne's oldest firewood supplier is winding up after 100 years in business.

Dunning and Sons started in October 1911. Since 1940 it has operated from a yard on the corner of Harp Rd and High St in Kew.

Ern Dunning, who now runs the business his grandfather started, says he needs a rest and nobody in the family wants to take it on.

"I'm nearly 66 and I've been thinking about this for a while," he said.

"While it's been a tough and emotional decision, I'm feeling better now that I've made up my mind."

Ern says the business described itself in the early days as "fuel merchants", but when he tells people now that he's a "fuel merchant", they think he sells petrol.

"At our peak we had a lot of staff, but in recent years I've had to scale back and let people go," he said.

"Now I'm closing the doors and heading off to see the world. I've been in here for seven days a week for years and it's time to do other things."

At its busiest, Dunning and Sons dealt with 500 orders a day, providing wood to thousands of homes across Melbourne. But now the yard is out of timber.

Ern says he's making arrangements for his regulars. "We'll make sure they don't go cold this winter," he said.
