I am delighted to announce the release of the 2011 Private Bin Reds. They are all wines with flavour, structure and the ability to live and improve in the bottle. In many ways they are like the 2009’s that are now really hitting their straps.

Vintage started almost a week later than in 2010 following a late start to spring and cooler softer weather throughout the growing season. There was plenty of rain but we were able to stay on top of any disease problems with strong vineyard management. The softer weather came to an abrupt halt on the first

two days of January when the temperature went just over 40 degrees. Some of the fruit on the north/south rows suffered sunburn and that was nature telling us which bunches to remove to balance out the big crop the shiraz were carrying. The rest of January returned to milder weather with another burst of heat at the end. The fruit dehydrated a bit and the sugars started to climb quickly. The first pinot noir was picked on 25 January and the first shiraz on 7 February. As February progressed the temperatures cooled down and we had a bit of rain so the pressure to pick came off and we could get over the vineyard in our own time, waiting to get the right balance of flavour and sugar.

The 2011 reds are bigger wines than the 2010’s and I believe this will be remembered as one the better shiraz vintages. Whilst the second burst of heat was ideal for the shiraz, it was at the wrong time for the pinot noir, and the wet weather late in the season washed away any

hopes of getting any Hilltops cabernet. So we have a shiraz only release this year but with no Old Patch as it was not quite up to our quality standards. The Stevens and Brokenback Shiraz of 2010 will again be available. Brokenback is now, I believe, the best value Hunter shiraz available.

There will be a mixed dozen of two of each of the wines for $474 and we have taken a modest price across the board.

I look forward to seeing you at our various tastings and dinners and being able to show you these top quality Hunter shiraz. It will be a good idea to get a bit more as unfortunately, there will be no 2012 reds due to the rain.

The last year has seen continued success in the national wine show

circuit. We have accrued 10 trophies and 36 gold medals in the past

12 months.

We started on the 17 January, the same as in 2011. We had cooler, wetter conditions from August almost through to Christmas and again, had to fight to stay ahead of downy mildew and bunch rot throughout the whole season. Like 2011, there was a bigger crop than we expected and in the first week of January we dropped about 15% of the shiraz on the ground to attempt to get more colour and intensity of flavour. The shiraz vines showed signs of water logging and the semillon leaves have, for the first time in my life, decided to pack up for winter two thirds of the way through January. We picked all of the chardonnay before semillon, which is again, a rarity, and with the cool, wet conditions nothing really got to high sugars. We were blessed with a fair amount of flavour early. Most of the chardonnays are in the 12.5% alcohol range and wonderful, fine, fresh styles that will be great young drinking but will take some real bottle age. We held off picking all of the top semillon for a week later than everyone else in the Valley. I have never believed it is worth picking your best fruit with not enough flavour. All of the top semillon was hand picked and double sorted in the vineyard to make sure the lower quality berries were kept away from the good, clean fruit. As we are now getting the whites cleaned up, I am getting happier and happier with the quality of them.

Unfortunately, the amount of rain we had, and the regularity of it, meant that the reds just didn’t make it. We salvaged about 60% of our red crop but it will be no better than Old Winery range. Not as bad as 2008 for red but not that far ahead. Therefore, there will be no Private Bin reds from 2012.

Heathcote has had a good crop with the shiraz just under 14% alcohol with lots of fine, peppery fruit. McLaren Vale was down to almost half a crop and Limestone Coast, which had basically no rain until the week we started to pick, looks pretty good.

So, what potentially looked like a disaster at the start and part-way into the growing season turned out to be one of the best white vintages that I have seen in the past five years.

Keep an eye out for our top flight chardonnays and semillons in September’s 2012 Private Bin White release booklet. The Vat 1 is looking very good and the Johnno’s is outstanding.

You and your guests are invited to join the Tyrrell family, meet our talented winemakers and experience some of the very best wines that Australia produces, well in advance of their commercial release. This year we are moving away from our traditional open bar and structured tastings, instead offering a series of intimate cocktail style functions held at unique capital city venues. Tastings are limited to 50 people, so bookings are essential.

The highlight of our event calendar is an exclusive “Members’ Day” held at our Hunter Valley vineyard, where we will close the winery to the general public. Our winemaking team will guide members and their guests through a seated tasting of our new release wines and conduct vineyard and winery tours. That evening we will host a dinner showcasing a selection of our museum wines.

We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at our tastings around the country, or here at the winery.

JoHNNo’S SHIRAZ 2011Medium bodied, wonderful sweet fruit nose with flavours through onto the palate. Great acid balance.

4 ACRES SHIRAZ 2011Amazing depth of fruit and softness. Great length of flavour and acid on the palate. A classic Hunter that will reward bottle age.

VAT 9 SHIRAZ 2011Big fruit and oak on the nose, long persistent flavours, balanced with good acid.

VAT 8 SHIRAZ CABERNET 2011The cabernet this year is from the Hunter. Nose is of cabernet and new oak, but the palate has great length and complexity.

STEVENS SHIRAZ 2010Good purple colour with a medium weight palate, real savoury. Pokolbin region nose and front palate, great length and balance of acid, oak and tannin.

BRoKENBACK SHIRAZ 2010I reckon this is the best value Hunter shiraz around. Clean, soft, interesting palate and nose, hard to keep as it is such good drinking now.

“There will be no Private Bin reds from the 2012 vintage. If you have a little extra space in your cellar, put away a few of these.”

QUICK NoTES… By M. Bruce Tyrrell, AM

Also available – limited stocks of our 2011 release whites

BELFoRD SEmILLoN 2011Full, rich, honey nose. Distinct sherbet fruit on the middle palate with a vibrant, fresh finish.

FoRDwICH VERDELHo 2011Grown on probably the oldest verdelho vineyard in Australia. Intense, varietal characters. Crisp acid. Great young drinking.

HVD CHARDoNNAY 2011Hand pressed. Balance of chardonnay fruit and a touch of solids in the ferment. My favourite piece of vineyard.

VAT 47 CHARDoNNAY 2011Superb balance of fruit and oak on the nose and palate. Long, fresh flavours and lively, acid finish.

4 ACRES SHIRAZ 2011

$49.00 per bottle $588.00 per dozen

Medium bodied with the complexity of flavour only found in these old blocks.

Only 250 dozen made. The 4 Acres vineyard was planted in 1879 and is the oldest vineyard on the Tyrrell property. It is planted in heavy red volcanic clay soils and is always pruned and picked carefully by hand.

This is a classic 4 Acres release. The wine is bright purple in colour with an exotic nose of red berries, confectionary, stalk and some spice. The palate is seamless and shows that a lighter style wine can still be very complex with great fruit power. It has amazing fruit length which is complemented by a fresh acid structure and soft, subtle tannins.

JoHNNo’S SHIRAZ 2011

$49.00 per bottle $588.00 per dozen

A classic 1970s style, light to medium-bodied Hunter red. Only 250 dozen made. The Johnno’s Shiraz was planted in 1908 and is situated on the sandy creek beds below the winery. It was hand harvested and sorted on the 22 February. This is the only one of our super premium shiraz vineyards planted on sandy soils.

In a hot year like 2011, shiraz on sandy flats excels and we see that in this release of the 2011 Johnno’s Shiraz, easily the finest release of this wine to date.

Bright purple in colour with an inviting nose of red berries and a subtle lift from the new French oak. Impeccable palate structure, the balance between fruit, acid and oak combine beautifully to make a wonderful example of traditional “Hunter River Burgundy”.

VAT 9 SHIRAZ 2011

$49.00 per bottle $588.00 per dozen

A strong, fruit driven wine with balanced acid and tannins. Our flagship red.

This year’s Vat 9 is a blend of our top vineyards sourced from the red volcanic soil strip that runs through the Weinkeller, NVC and Short Flat vineyards, with an average vine age of 50 years. The vineyards were picked between the 10 and 25 February.

The parcels were kept separate until blending in December 2011 before going back to wood until May 2012 for bottling.

Typical Vat 9 from a good Hunter vintage, it shows a wonderfully lifted nose of red berries and subtle oak. A ‘pretty’ wine with generous, rounded fruit on the palate with a creamy texture that gives the wine an extra element of interest. Medium bodied shiraz at its best.

VAT 8 SHIRAZ CABERNET 2011

$46.00 per bottle $552.00 per dozen

100% Hunter Valley. A modern representation of this classic blend.

Vat 8 is a blend of shiraz and cabernet from the Hunter Valley. The shiraz coming from premium vineyards on the Tyrrell and Moon Mountain properties and the cabernet coming from Pokolbin.

All of the components were fermented and matured separately until blending in December 2011. After blending the wine was put back into French oak barriques (30% new) until bottling in May 2012. The wine was predominately matured in smaller 225Lt barriques.

As is always the case with Vat 8, we see much darker fruits and some chocolate characters in the wine along with the extra element of spice from the higher percentage of new oak.

2011 PRIVATE BIN RED RELEASE8.

STEVENS SHIRAZ 2010

$28.00 per bottle $336.00 per dozen

A classic, savoury medium-bodied Hunter shiraz.

The 2010 Stevens Shiraz comes from Neil Steven’s Old Hillside vineyard on Marrowbone Road, which has always been a source of top end Hunter shiraz. This vineyard has quite a unique soil, which differs from the red clays at the Tyrrell property and gives the wine’s their own character.

The wine is matured in both newer French oak large format casks (2700Lt) and the standard barrique (225Lt) before blending in December, followed by a further six months maturation in barriques until bottling.

A richer, fleshier wine than the others in this year’s release. There is a very inviting nose of dark berry fruits and a clean, high quality French oak lift. The palate shows a soft, creamy texture with rich shiraz fruit and an elegant acid structure bringing the wine together seamlessly.

BRoKENBACK SHIRAZ 2010

$16.00 per bottle $192.00 per dozen

The ‘baby brother’ to our flagship Vat 9. This vintage is bolstered by the addition

of the 4 Acres fruit.Brokenback Shiraz is a blend of premium vineyards on and around the Tyrrell family property. The majority of fruit for this wine comes from vineyards that are not of the age to be considered for Vat 9, as well as some declassified barrels from the top end wines. This release of Brokenback actually has all of the 2010 4 Acres Shiraz in it.

The best way to describe this wine is Hunter Valley shiraz 101. Medium bodied, red berry fruit, fresh acid and minimal oak sum up what we are trying to achieve with this wine.

The Private Bin Wine Club was formed in 1961 by the late Murray Tyrrell to provide members with access to exclusive small production wines from our premium Hunter Valley vineyards.

Today, our Private Bin range of wines remains true to Murray’s vision; producing only small quantities from our premium Hunter Valley vineyards when vintage allows. Six of these vineyards are over 100 years old and are home to some of the rarest vines in the world.

Membership of the Tyrrell’s Private Bin Wine Club requires a commitment to receiving a minimum of one dozen bottles of Tyrrell’s Winemaker’s Selection, Sacred Sites or Single Vineyard wines per year. The wines are preselected by the member and are held in reserve as a ‘standing order’ until release. Standing orders may be amended at any time.

Red wines are released in May, and white wines are released in September.
