A suffix adds meaning to a root or word. Watch how I examine a word’s position & function to understanding meaning.

Inez sat in the audience at a cooking show.

The suffix –ence signals that this word is a noun.

The root aud- means “hear”.

Since aud- means “hear” and –ence means “state of”, it makes sense that the meaning of “audience” is a “thing” (a group) that listens.

A suffix adds meaning to a root or word. Suffixes often give clues that indicate part of speech (noun, adjective, etc.). The suffix –ence usually signals a noun; the suffix –al usually signals an adjective.
