UNIVERSITY HIGH SCHOOL
COLLEGE OF EDUCATION UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS URBANA
As you open this U 'nl, your yearbook for 1955-1956, you will find in these pages a record
of what you have done with your years at Uni High. As you look at the pictures of you,
your classmates, and your teachers, you will be able to recall vividly those swift-passing
years and how the people will whom you spent those years look- -and what they did. The
Class Calendar provides a detailed record of your many activities during the 1955-1956
school year. The Class Will and the Class Prophecy will give you an insight into the
future activities of you and your classmates.
As the years pass, you can open your yearbook at any time and be reminded of your
graduation activities. You can recall, by a quick glance at the photographs, your teachers
and your friends. And you will know, beyond any doubt, that YOUR class is the one that
has made Uni High so outstanding.
It is good for you to remember your school days. For those of us who are already
"graduates" there is the opportunity to recall our school days as we see them through
yours. Undoubtedly both you and I will receive the same measure of satisfaction and
pleasure from turning through these pages in later years.
I am glad to welcome you to this time of remembering and to the many later times when
this yearbook will remind you of your school and of all of us who were a part of it when
you were here.

STUDENT COUNCIL
The 1955-1956 Student Council was under the leadership of Laurie McClure, President; BobParker, Vice-President; Ann Cleary, Secretary; RikFjelde, Treasurer; and Miss Leppert, Sponsor.
Council instituted many new things this year; it made the purchase of activity tickets mandatory,
instituted an honor study hall, joined the community in helping furnish recreational facilities for
the Youth Home, purchased a juke box, starxed a new program of student orientation, joined the
District of Association of Student Councils r and was honored by having one of its members --BobParker- -elected treasurer of that organization. In October, the students and faculty joined forces
to present Uni High's most financially successful carnival.
Student Council committees also improved and increased their services to the school. In all.
Student Council successfully fulfilled its purpose as the primary governing body of the school.

Unique, which was revived this year after a year's absence due to lack of interest, is the
school's literary magazine. It is written and edited by students and is put out when there is suf-
ficient material to merit doing so. The Unique staff put out four issues this year which included
many original and unusual stories written by students of the various English classes. Unique
was very well received this year and it is hoped that the magazine will continue to be a fruitful
outlet for Uni High's talented writers.

SCIENCE CLUBS
Science Club was one of Uni High's new clubs, and one of the most active. Its purpose was to
stimulate interest in science among Uni High students.
Each student was responsible for preparing a program for one of the Tuesday noon meetings. Twoof the most interesting programs during the year were a field trip to visit ILLIAC and a talk by Mr. John
Bardeen on transistors. Jim Bardeen was president and Nancy Simon was secretary.

U-Club, Uni High's lettermen's organization, was very active this
year. The boys sold popcorn, took tickets and ushered at basketball
games. U-Club was the sponsor of a very successful dance in October,
titled, "Strains and Sprains."
The new U-Club initiates were Lindsey Black, Leonard Hays, Dave
Lantz, Bill Plymire, Dean Wallen, and Dan Yohe.
![Page 74: U and I - University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign](https://reader035.vdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022073119/62e5c45467a2307ff8799107/html5/thumbnails/74.jpg)

CROSS COUNTRY
Cross Country, the fall sports event, is Uni High's newest sport. This is its second year. A Cross
Country race lasts for two miles and is run on almost any kind of course. Due to the length and
location of the course, Cross Country racing is seldom considered a spectator sport.

JUNIOR VARSITY
The Junior Varsity had a better year this year than did the varsity,
with ten wins and six losses. Their best score was an easy 67-19
against Ogden, followed by a 63-29 against Potomac. This fine showing
under the coaching of Coach Richard Schnell should put next year's
varsity near the top.

![Page 76: U and I - University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign](https://reader035.vdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022073119/62e5c45467a2307ff8799107/html5/thumbnails/76.jpg)

BASKETBALL VABSITY
The "Buckeyes" had an "off year this year. Their only win was their first bout with Ogden,
44 to 41. The team always gave the spectators an excellent show of ball-handling, but this was not
enough to off-set its lack of shooting ability.
Jim Buckley and Steve Poulos were added to the varsity from the reserves to add more shooting
power, and Grant Fairbanks and John Buley were traded to the reserves so that they could get
some more experience. The loss of six senior varsity members will cut a large hole in next
year's team, but thanks to an active bench this year and a good reserve team this year, Uni High
should have a good team next year.

SEPTEMBER
7. Again Uni's rooms and corriders are filled with the happy voices of young peopleeager to fill their minds with knowledge- -and we have to be here ten minutes earlier--at 8:00 A.M.. yet!!
8. Orientation assembly- -all students old and new alike crowded into the gym to havea bird's-eye view of all the extra-curricular activities. We hope some--such asTerrapin in bubble hats --were exaggerated.
9. This Howdy Hop was characterized firstly by its fabulous organization, (by the Seniors)and secondly by its equally fabulous decoration (by the Seniors). Very interestinggames were played- -one seemed to consist mostly of wrenching stockings and otherapparel off unwilling participants. A truly edifying event I
12. Due to something teachers prefer to call a "meeting" they gave us the morning off.
We hope they didn't suffer extensively by having to meet during our vacation.
14. G.A.A. can't say it wasn't warned. G.A.A.held its annual picnic--in the gym, becauseit was raining. Rain at a G.A.A. picnic- -according to G.A.A. officers—has happenedonly once a year (every year) in the past.
15. Carnival Assembly! Along with being introduced to what the Carnival is (the themethis year: Roaring Twenties) we learned that Mr. Proff is a frustrated Groucbo Marxand Mr. Allen a frustrated ring-toss target.
15-16. A whoppin attendance of 30-plus heraldedtheOrchesis Workshop. It looks nowas if Orchesis will be of respectable size this year --big enough to be seen.
17. Some lucky, lucky people saw "Yeomen of the Guard" in Chicago toaay. But, (?!),they couldn't remember the performance- -their only comment, "Ask 'Pete* andDave what we sang on the way home.
26-30. This is the paradoxical week when people kill themselves working, and get outof class for doing so! ! Unfortunately it is only for money- -not in the quest ofknowledge. In other words: Carnival week is here! ! Calloo-callay!
!
![Page 79: U and I - University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign](https://reader035.vdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022073119/62e5c45467a2307ff8799107/html5/thumbnails/79.jpg)
27-28. Our first two cross-country meets--with Tremont and Bismark.
both. Is it worth mentioning that we compiled the highest score?
We lost them
28-29. With the "Curious Savage" announced as the fall play it is now time for tryouts.
Mr. Rahlf says it only takes 27 days to produce a play. Good luck!
OCTOBER
1. One wild night of revelry I The Carnival!! Expanded to the great outdoors to in-
clude "dunking" and also, due to more complete publicity than ever before, there
was a large crowd-- including unfortunately, some "young people with misdirected
energies." In spite of this handicap: A FINAL PROFIT OF $615.84.
4. We could have told Mr. Rahlf which of us should be admitted to the 'home' in the fall
play "The Curious Savage." However he chose to find out his own way and announced
the cast today- -Nadine Hansen is the principal occupant. Congratulations? Nadine.
11,19,21. Uni High went down three in a row in cross-country, twice to Mattoon and once
to Tremont. There is dancing and singing somewhere, it just isnlt here.
19. For once it was sunny for a field trip- -all the Biology students rejoiced and went
carousing off to Kickapoo to gather insects. They came home loaded with frogs,
turtles, fish, worms and two snakes.
20. The juniors played the seniors a football game. The juniors lost, naturally. Although
less skilled players they claim they lost because of an excessively large penalty due
to their "language." Moral: Virtue is its own reward.
21,22. These days Gargoyle and the great and glorious Yearbook staff members (of the
one you now see before you) have a distinct advantage. They flashed little cards and
zoomed off--ostensibily to an ISHSPA meeting. Hmph?
22. Really now lettermen, isn't it too much- -red and white crepe paper for blood and
bandages --and at a dance, too? Fortunately many managed to forget this and had a
good time at "Strains and Sprains"--the above alluded to annual U -CLUB DANCE.
![Page 80: U and I - University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign](https://reader035.vdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022073119/62e5c45467a2307ff8799107/html5/thumbnails/80.jpg)
25. Underclassmen elections have been announced; after a slight delay of two weeks.
It was reported that the Freshmen got so enthusiastic about campaigning that they
gave a campaigning party--using gas station banners from last 4th of July.
28. An assembly today featured a showing of a film made from the ALMANAC OFLIBERTY, by Chief Justice Stephen O. Douglas. The whole plot was held up because
of some clock-hands that stopped at 10:23 A.M. The Seniors spent many hours in
follow-up discussions on this movie.
NOVEMBER
1. Everyone (that is a few of the more enthusiastic cast members and Mr. Rahlf) has
been busily working on the technical aspects of "The Curious Savage. " Their biggest
problem is how to acquire a brown suit, a blue suit and a grey suit.
3. Well, first they called it wet grounds, and then they called it obscene language and
then they called it 6-0, and then the faculty said they won the annual Faculty-Senior
football game.
4. The Seniors had a class meeting in which the surprising question of whether or not the
Seniors should have a Baccalaureate was brought up. After hot debate with "tradition"
against "principle," tradition won.
11. Teachers have convinced themselves to the point where they will not consider bribes--
and consequently put nasty half-truths on yellow papers, called the "progress" re-
ports and are handing them out !
!
11,12. Both performances of "The Curious Savage" went off delightfully. The audience
was small but extremely appreciative. There was a regrettable tendency to think of
many characters as type-cast.
14. A big day for any old-timeUni High student. Our former dearly beloved dance teacher,
Mim Rosen, reappeared with a dance trio from Washington, D.C. The house was full
for the performance; all her friends, and with good reason, thought she was wonderful.
![Page 81: U and I - University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign](https://reader035.vdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022073119/62e5c45467a2307ff8799107/html5/thumbnails/81.jpg)

15. Tonight Junior and Senior parents go toaP.T.A. meeting to hear how their off-spring
can get into college. Unfortunately they leave unsolved the vital problems of scholastic
standing and ready cash.
19 Today, as has been planned for months, was the Tri-High Dance. Many went, reassur-
ing themselves that they were really "Queen For a Knight." What disturbed us was
the size of the gym--it was big enough for at least REAL locker rooms.
23-27. We started off Thanksgiving vacation with a bang-by losing our first basketball
game to Mahomet. Today was also the deadline for the Seniors' English research
papers. Immediately after handing them in the Seniors pronounced themselves com-
pletely recovered from the strain of the mental exertions and in shape to go right
home and SLEEP !
!
DECEMBER
2,3. We are said to have given A.B.L. a scare during tonight's basketball game. Being
kind-hearted souls we let them have the happy ending, and lost: 72-58. It was much
the same with Homer the next day, although the score was different: 66-38.
9. Today eight Uni High students went to a Young Citizens of Central Illinois conference
*
in Decatur and "Unique" had a re-organizational meeting at which Emil de Antonio
was elected editor. There was some doubt as to which event was the most important.
10. Really out-distanced this time- -Uni lost to Potomac, 96 to 38. C'mon fellows, hit
it again- -harder, harder!!
11 Instead of merely songs, this year the Christmas Concert included orchestral numbers,'
Madrigals' singing and a cantata sung by Mixed Chorus. Ver-r-r-y interesting.
13. Littered all over are signs imploring us to Keep Our School Clean. One really doesn't
know which to do first: distribute wastebaskets or tear down the signs.
![Page 82: U and I - University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign](https://reader035.vdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022073119/62e5c45467a2307ff8799107/html5/thumbnails/82.jpg)

14. The Progress Report Committee reports that they are Doing Something about theunimformative and generally ambiguous state of progress reports. What they aredoing is unknown (though there are rumors about Grades every quarter.)
19. Now that the French classes --joined for the first time by the German classes andsundry other individuals-have gone caroling, the Christmas Season is official.
20. Not only was today the last day of school before vacation-complete with a Surprizeassembly and refreshments, and the day the first printed GARGOYLE came out (twomonths late), but today was also the day the Juniors held the Christmas Dance. Theelectric eye doors at the far end of the Club Commons were once again widely usedand a good time was had by all.
23. Shades of last year's operetta ! This time when GONDOLIERS was put on there wereslight changes. The largest was that from gondolas to bicycles as a means of trans-portation. This final touch to an evening of great hilarity was thought by many to bea great improvement.
25. Today is the day most of us got up earlier than we normally do- -but had, we hope, good reason. In other words: a Tremendously Merry Christmas to aU.
JANUARY
3. All good things come to an end. Back in school after vacation we are all trying to
convince our teachers, and they us, that we all find it bearable to be in each otherscompany again.
6. To rub off the last bit of holiday cheer left Uni was defeated by Bellflower. 63-56.Isn't this going too far ?
9. They have really made good their word!— yes, UNIQUES are out! ! There was somemumbling among the staff: "How soon will it be discovered that the Freshmen arewhat kept this issue alive?" They want more contributions ! !

14. After much stewing, the Tri-High stunt show was put on tonight. We all thought
"Billie" Plymire was a darling.
17. Those mesmerized people you see waving their arms to music and walking in for-
mation after school are merely the first mild signs that the Terrapin show is in
Rehearsal and will soon be Presented.
21,28. The time when Uni really needs martyrs- -to stand out in the cold and beg for
dimes (the March, of course). Unfortunately the organization allows no rake-off
whatsoever.
24,25,26. Amazing the number of long faces in the library giving themselves a grey pall
over IT. (exams). After it was over, and everyone managed to stagger through alive,
the Seniors gave an all-school party. The theme alone: Bring Your Own Decorations
(i.e, a sign reading Ali Baba's Cave and thirty undecorated Christmas trees, etc.,
etc.) assured success.
27. We won We won We won !!!!!!! That is A Basketball Game!!!!!!! With Ogden, 44-41!!!!!!
Yah, hurrah!!!!!!!
31. Our new choral director, Mr. Sienknecht, has a truly inventive mind. This year,
O terque quaterque beati!, we are doing "Down in the VaUey" aM/th^? '*BrookJ
Baseball Cantata." Rehearsals have already started. aMi CKa
