Rabbi Reacts As a kid, receiving a larger allowance was something that I

always wanted. I was never shy about letting my desires be known. My parents, being well versed in the ways of children, were never without an answer when I approached them asking for a raise . "If you want more", they would tell me, "then take on more chores. With responsibility comes privilege ."

That same approach has been the key to much of my happiness during these past four years. When I first arrived at BJBE the prospect of success, given the variety and amount of work, was daunting. And that same adage kept ringing inside of me: "With responsibility comes privilege." You have entrusted me to be your rabbi and it has been an honor to have walked together these past four years. Together we have celebrated and have questioned and learned. Together we have sat at the hospital and together we have cried as well. Pre•ldent'• Corner This will be the last Bulletin article I'll write as President of our

Congregation. These past two years have been a wonderful time in my life, a time of making many new temple friends , as well as personal growth . It has been an honor to have served our temple and I thank you for the privilege .

There have been certain people who deserve a special thank you for their help , cooperation and support over not only the past two years, but the many years prior to that . The most Important people are my wife Susan and my kids, Debbie, Brett and Frank. Susan for the countless hours she has spent typing, editing and working on all my Temple paperwork, as well as being my sounding board ; the kids for their patience and understanding for all the nights and days when I wanted to spend time with them and they knew It was best to let Dad do his thing.

Also, I want to thank Miriam and her entire office crew for their help in preparing, arranging, changing, mailing, etc. for the executive board members and committee chairs. Marshall Krolick, Al Wagner, Jim Harfleld , Stan Swig, Zelda Wise, Jerry Loebman and Joe Ernsteen deserve a note of thanks for serving as role models and for their advice and counsel. Also, Sandee Holleb for being there when I needed her .

One of the great joys of temple leadership certainly must be the many committee chalrpeople who I now count as friends as well as colleagues. The cooperation and achievements of the current Executive Board is unparelleled in recent memory. Their hard work and countless hours made my job much easier and made me look good. Personally, the hours I've spent with Rabbis Shapiro and Fine , and the time with Joy Wasserman have solidified my good feelings in regard to our temple professional leadership .

Our Tempie Board members also deserve a vote of thanks for their cooperative attitude during a year of difficult decisions. Every meeting was not easy, but the decisions made were made with the best interests of the Temple at heart .

When I began this job I set some goals for the Congregation and a few personal ones, too . Some of these I achieved while others may need more time If they ever come to fruition . One goal which stands out as needing further work is that of broadening the base of temple involvement and encouraging more congregants tQ step forward to be on committees and assume congregational leadership.

As I said earlier, today's leaders did a terrific job and I wish the new officers and trustees Mazel Tov on their election , but mostly, thanks for stepping forward and accepting the responsibility.

We have many wonderful events and activities planned for the 93-94 year, Including our Centennial Celebration . I remain resolutely optimistic about our Congregation's future, its members and its leaders. I hope to share these and many other joyous occasions with my wonderful temple family .

Sisterhood It Is only befitting that Rabbi David and Beth Fine are being

honored at Sisterhood's Circle of Service Brunch this year. Just like a circle, as their times and talents at BJBE conclude, it is the beginning of exciting, challenging Jewish growth and resettlement in Washington state .

Please join us on Sunday, June 27 as we say L'hitraot to the Fines . This relaxing brunch will be held at Gail Ostach's home at 1:00 pm, and will be complete with musical entertainment. Please respond to your invitation promptly . Contact Barbara Levine (498-1854) if you have any questions.

Sisterhood Shabbat on June 4, is always a warm, pleasant service for all congregants to attend. We hope to see many of the volunteers who assisted this year's busy Board, as we acknowledge their support . Installation of Officers for the coming year will take place that evening . Our Oneg that evening will feature homemade treats and is sure to be a deligtful end to a beautiful Shabbat service.

The Culminating Luncheon , for all Sisterhood earners, on Sunday, June 13, will be at Allgauer's Restaurant, Holiday Inn Crowne Plaza, Northbrook, 11:45 am. Sharon Silver (564-0688) and her committee have arranged this luncheon , followed by a performance with Hasha Perman and her accompanist.

The Jewish Feminism Group will meet Thursday, June 17 at 7 :30 pm, in the Temple for a dialogue between Palestinian and Israeli women. The May meeting offered a speaker in preparation for this exciting June event; you're welcome to attend, even if you missed the May date. If you have any questions about this meeting, please phone Roberta Krolick (498-3126) .

Some of our Sisterhood women have attended Jewish study groups out-of-state and brought back new friendships and spiritual "lifts" . Contact Ruth Maller (498-3634) or Elaine Kupfer (564-1656) quickly to reserve your space for our very own Kallah at nearby Woodstock Center. Spend July 9 and 10 with BJBE Sisterhood members and talk about it for years to come!

During the summer, the Judaica Shop is open by appointment. To schedule a time to see items on display or available by special order, contact Annette (498-7644), Sheila (299-3838) or Hedda (480-7644) .

The baseball season is in full swing and Sisterhood will be announcing a lineup of women and their new positions on the Board. Watch your Sisterhood bulletin for changes.

What? You don't receive a Sisterhood bulletin? Maybe it's time to take some action and support this vital , caring Temple team! Call Joanne Katz (498-0776) President, or Lois Stiglitz (498-3337) Membership Vice President, today .

A Special Thanks to Lee Loebman (312/274-9649) for his beautiful artwork which appeared on our L'Dor Vador Confirmation Card .

Brotherhood News The Brotherhood has heard rumors that many temple

members had a very enjoyable evening attending the Seder. That is very satisfying to those who helped with it, namely: Rabbi Fine for an excellent service, Hasha for the musical portion and Dr. Harold and Irene Goldberg for putting together the evening's repast. A special thank you to all those additional people who donated their time and energy Into making this holiday memorable.

Past Brotherhood event: the Brunch held on April 11th (with 103 paid attendance), was an extremely nostalgic look back over the past of many of the old and mostly non-existent temples and changing neighborhoods. This was a presentation by Norman Schwartz of the Chicago Jewish Historical Society and enjoyed by all . Thank you to Ron Weisser and all who helped getting the brunch together .

Future Brotherhood event: The season Culminating Dinner with entertainment, door prizes and drawing for our raffle will be held on Saturday , June 19. Be sure to mail in your raffle tickets or bring them with you when you attend the dinner. If you need additional tickets please call me (675-8467).

Gus Schwatz, President

Sodal Action The Tzedakah recipient for June is Shalva, an agency which

provides ongoing services for (the unthinkable), battered and abused Jewish women and children . They have a 24-hour hotline, safe homes and kosher food, counseling, medical , dental, legal and financial help, transportation , child care and job assistance . Shalva reclaims lives in the face of impending disaster. If our generous donations to the Tzedakah box on

-Shabbat are greatly appreciated . The April Feed The Homeless Team went to the Olive

Branch Mens' and Womens' shelters, Chicago Industrial League, and Father Vincent's Outreach Shelter. Temple Chal's volunteers were Girl Scouts who brought 150 well-packed lunches and particpated at the Industrial League and assisted at the Outreach Mission. They and their leaders were terrific helpers. July 4th, the Industrial League wlll be serving 1800 people and there Is a need for volunteers. We really need more donations of lunches from the congregation! We also need a source for potato chips and fruit.

FEED THE HOMELESS May 23 and June 'D

Donations taken and the North Door· 8:45-10:00 am

The donated groceries were delivered to the ARK and the Northfield Food Pantry . There Is still a great need . Plans have begun for the CROP HUNGER WALK to take place October 18th. Where last year the task force consisted of five people, this year there are twelve . The combined forces of the participating Northbrook and Glenview churches and synagogues brought In $15,000 last year, of which the Northfield Food Pantry received 25 % . This year we are hoping to recruit businesses and other congregations and hope to bring in $20,000 to curb world hunger.

Environment - Natural alternatives to hazardous cleaning solutions are: baking soda, flaxsoap , vinegar and water, cedar blocks for air-freshening, plungers and boiling water for clogged drains. Use water-based paints Instead of oil-based . Use products with a pump mechanism instead of aerosols . Remember the ozone layer!

As the Congregational year ends, so does my term as Social Action Vice-president. Allow me to extend a blanket thank you to everyone who volunteered in the G'milut Chassadim project. Your efforts in Feeding the Homeless, at the Inspiration Cafe, during the Blood Drive, delivering Meals on Wheels, taking part in services at Glenview Terrace Nursing Home and The Abington, assisting at WINGS, calling those who are ill and grieving, taking part in the Russian Conversation Club, donating to MAZON, packing and delivering Pesach parcels for Maot Chitim, shopping for and visiting with the elderly homebound in the city were splendid . Whether you helped make lunches on Sunday morning or made one phone call extending sympathy, you lifted someone's spirits. Your personal priorities were set aside to think of someone else's needs. The donations of funds, the food for the ARK and Northfield Township Food Pantry, the toiletries, the kid's clothes, everything was welcomed and appreciated. Thank all of you for your time and your energies. It has been a wonderful project. My hope is that It will remain an ongoing Social Action commitment. M 1 T ere erry

Mrs. Kamenear is the representative of the Midwest Federation of Temple Sisterhoods to the Camp Board and herself the mother of a new prospective camper.
