Dear Graduates,

What a joy it is to celebrate success, and certainly each one of those graduating today has reason to celebrate. You have been successful, you passed the tests, you put in the time, and you are walking down the celebratory aisle. No one can ever take that away from you.

But for just a moment, think about what Jesus told the disciples as they were competing for who would be the most successful in His Kingdom.

So Jesus got them together to settle things down. He said, “You’ve observed how godless rulers throw their weight around, how quickly a little power goes to their heads. It’s not going to be that way with you. Whoever wants to be great must become a servant. Who-ever wants to be first among you must be your slave (Matthew 20:25–27, The Message).

When our identity and value is determined by how the world measures our success we are using the wrong measurement. Seek to walk in the footsteps of Jesus by looking at how you might be a blessing to others, rather than how you might be blessed by others. When you leave this earth, as we all will, one way or another, what you take with you is what you leave behindi, “Carve your name on hearts, not tombstones. A legacy is etched into the minds of others and the stories they share about you.”ii

Yours in Christ,

Gordon Bietz

I’m pressing on the upward way, New heights I’m gaining every day; Still praying as I onward bound, Lord plant my feet on higher ground

Lord, lift me up, and I shall stand By faith, on heaven’s table land;A higher plane than I have found; Lord, plant my feet on higher ground.

My heart has no desire to stay Where doubts arise and fears dismay;Though some may dwell where these abound, My prayer, my aim is higher ground

Lord, lift me up, and I shall stand By faith, on heaven’s table land;A higher plane than I have found; Lord, plant my feet on higher ground.

I want to live above the world, Though Satan’s darts at me are hurled; For faith has caught the joyful sound, The song of saints on higher ground

Lord, lift me up, and I shall stand By faith, on heaven’s table land;A higher plane than I have found; Lord, plant my feet on higher ground.

I want to scale the utmost height, And catch a gleam of glory bright; But still I’ll pray till heaven I’ve found, Lord lead me on to higher ground.

Lord, lift me up, and I shall stand By faith, on heaven’s table land;A higher plane than I have found; Lord, plant my feet on higher ground.

The Class of 2016 is co-creating an endowed scholarship fund to benefit future students at Southern. Once fully funded at $25,000, the Students 2 Students Endowed Scholarship will provide an annual scholarship of at least $1,000 to a student with demonstrated financial need. By choosing an endowed scholarship as their class gift, they are leaving a legacy that will benefit Southern students in perpetuity. The Class of 2016 officers extend our deepest gratitude to all who have given alongside them to help make this possible. Fundraising for this endowment builder fund will continue over the next year, and all are invited to join us in building this legacy at southern.edu/classgift.

Lisa Clark Diller, PhD, began teaching at Southern Adventist University in 2002 and currently serves as chair of the History and Political Studies Department. In addition, she has served as chair of the University Senate.

Diller developed a pilot program for new students that laid the groundwork for the current Southern Connections class taken by all incoming freshmen. Working with the Spiritual Life Committee and Career Services, Diller helped develop a plan which encourages students to combine their vocational and spiritual interests into a calling. She also worked with student research coordinators at Lee University and the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga to begin a regional student conference for history and political studies students.

Concerning Diller’s service to the Adventist church and the greater Chattanooga community, a colleague writes: “She pursues projects to which she feels called with indefatigable passion and incomparable diligence, whether it’s helping with a church plant in downtown Chattanooga, serving on the board of the One Project, leading European study tours, or even raising money for worthy charities on bicycle rides across New Zealand.” Diller connects students with similar service opportunities locally because of her roles with the Chattanooga Area Historical Association, the Mayor’s Council on Women, and the Women’s Diversity Committee. These activities are an inspiration to others. “She breathes belief into her students, colleagues, family, and friends that God’s Kingdom begins here on Earth,” a colleague said.

Because of her commitment to serving others and her dedication to helping students do the same, Southern Adventist University is pleased to recognize Lisa Clark Diller as a worthy recipi-ent of the Distinguished Service Medallion.

Tyson Hall, PhD, began teaching in the School of Computing at Southern Adventist University in 2005. As a new faculty member, he was the architect for the embedded systems emphasis in the computer science program and has been instrumental in obtaining and maintaining accreditation. Hall has served on visiting teams responsible for assessing peer institutions and successfully navigated Southern through a recent accreditation, leaving no stone unturned. Hall will serve as chair of the University Senate next year.

Hall’s skill at balancing multiple responsibilities is evident in his active leadership among secular professionals and his church community. He coauthored a textbook and owns a patent. He has served as president for the American Society of Engineering Education (southeastern chapter) and continues to review papers for the annual conference. For the past 11 years, he has served as director of the Southern Challenge Lego Robotics tournament. He has been a long-time elder in his local church and is a member of the East Tennessee Symphony Orchestra.

In addition to all of this, Hall is known by his students as professionally inspiring, having “a knack for pushing students to reach the greatest level of academic knowledge, understanding, and skill possible in every class” and encouraging them to “never give up on solving a difficult, ambitious problem that is seemingly out of reach.”

Because of his example of emulating Christ’s service both behind the scenes and in leader-ship, Southern Adventist University is pleased to recognize Tyson Hall as a worthy recipient of the Distinguished Service Medallion.

Benjamin McArthur, PhD, is the quintessential professor-scholar, representing the finest in Southern’s tradition of the scholarship of teaching. Focused on 19th century American culture, his scholarly work has included building up McKee Library’s resources and developing new classes that allow students to do original research using our library’s special collections. The result is Southern’s Center for the Study of 19th Century America in the library. He is also responsible for the revival and sustaining of the Association of Seventh-day Adventist Historians.

McArthur has written three books, one of which was named a CHOICE Outstanding Academic Book of 1984. He served as an associate editor for Oxford University Press’s American National Biog-raphy, which was among the most important reference works projects of the 1990s. He has written articles for a number of national publications, including American Heritage, The American Scholar, First Things, and The New England Quarterly. Additionally, he has written for Adventist publications and contributed to books about Adventism and Ellen White. He served as the Walter Utt visiting scholar at Pacific Union College, and in March 2016 Pacific Press published A.G. Daniells: Shaper of Twentieth-century Adventism, his study of the denomination’s greatest General Conference president

McArthur has enjoyed all these writing projects, and his pleasure in research has been inspirational to colleagues. Still, he insists that his primary responsibility and source of greatest satisfaction remains his work with students.

Southern Adventist University is pleased to present the President’s Award for Excellence in Scholarship to Benjamin McArthur.

David George, MFA, was instrumental in founding the School of Visual Art and Design’s film program in 2001, giving Southern Adventist University the distinction of leading the denomination in the formal study of narrative storytelling in film.

His ongoing commitment to practicing the craft he teaches has garnered award-winning recognition and brought rich professional context to his classroom. Notable projects include: director of photog-raphy for Old Fashioned, a faith-based romantic drama released nationally in theaters on Valentine’s Day in 2015; producer and cinematographer of Secret of the Cave, a feature-length film that received the prestigious Crystal Heart Award at the Heartland Film Festival and was released nationwide in 2007; and creator and director of a bold self-study and research documentary, Life After Film School.

George’s colleagues attest to his relentless pursuit of excellence and his unwavering commitment to the success and spiritual nurture of students. They credit him with making Southern the premiere Adventist university for film production and for empowering graduates to be competitive with the best of the best.

His students have described him as selfless, gracious, and inspiring. They testify that he encourages the highest possible standard in his classes while creating a learning environment where it is safe to take risks and make mistakes on the path to excellence. He brings “a sense of wonder” as he provides insight into the technicalities and art of lighting and film production.

In recognition of his outstanding ability to inspire students, maintain high standards, and practice highly effective teaching, Southern Adventist University is proud to present David George with the President’s Award for Teaching Excellence.

One student describes Adam Heck, MS, as “a wonderful teacher who does everything in his power to help students succeed and who cares about his student workers as well.” Another student notes that he is innovative, records and posts lectures online, and “his teaching methods have contributed greatly to me learning Calculus and Statistics.” He is available and always willing to assist struggling students who need extra help.

Heck’s teaching is appreciated by individuals across campus. A faculty member wrote “all of my advisees love him. He has made math classes applicable to all majors. It is innovative that he addresses math questions that relate to various professional fields.” A student expressed similar sentiments in writing “Mr. Heck puts an extensive amount of time into planning and setting up his lessons, is friendly around campus, and frequently asks about his students’ lives and well-being.”

Students speak of his personal interest and dedication to his students, from how he knew all of their names on the first day of class, to the way he “treats each student as an individual rather than as ‘another student.’” This caring attitude is best articulated by a student who notes that “he takes time at the beginning of each lecture to ask for our prayer requests before we delve into classwork.”

Because of his engagement in the ministry of education within his field, and because of his exemplary dedication to his students, Southern Adventist University is pleased to award Adam Heck the President’s Award for Commitment to Student Success.

Classes with Julie Hyde, PhD, are described as “spirit-led” and a student commented that “her spiritual strength flows over into her classroom through both devotions and class discussion.” In her interactions with students she is seen as an “incredibly professional educator who challenges and instructs with expertise.” Students say that she is focused on instilling integrity in her students” as an “imperative as a Christian and as a CPA entrusted to audit and opine on companies’ financial statements.”

“I had a class with Dr. Hyde my freshman year of college and she made me want to be an accoun-tant,” writes a senior. “She adapts her teaching to students so that they will learn and understand.” “She was the most engaged teacher I have had at Southern. Comments from other students affirm that she is a “Christ-like and caring friend outside of class” who is available to help students learn and to “make sure students are doing all right in both academics as well as taking care of themselves and enjoying their lives.” Students who are not currently taking classes from her are impressed because she greets them by name.

Hyde’s desire to expose students to the field of accounting has resulted in bringing guests to class to speak about the field of accounting, a strong support for student internships and a requirement in Advanced Accounting class for students to attend at least one professional meeting during the semester.

A student remarked that she “is truly a gem and Southern is lucky to have her as a faculty member.” Another student noted “I have never met another professor that has been as deserving of recognition as Dr. Hyde.”

Because of her commitment to instilling values and a love for accounting in her students while diligently working to support their development as young professionals, Southern Adventist Uni-versity is pleased to award Julie Hyde the President’s Award for Commitment to Student Success.

Byron DeFoor has more than 30 years of business experience, with particular expertise in development of commercial real estate and both residential and healthcare communities.

In 1976, he founded DeFoor Development to specialize in building shopping centers, office buildings, and retirement communities. DeFoor later began investing in skilled nursing facilities and now has an ownership interest in nursing homes and assisted living facilities nationwide. He also co-founded Contemporary Healthcare Capital, a lending agency for healthcare providers. DeFoor currently serves as a director and controlling stockholder in many organizations, including Grace Healthcare, Millennium Bank, Millennium Alliance Bank, Chattanooga Hotel Group, and Focus Consumer Health.

In May 2010, President Obama and the U.S. Small Business Administration named Contemporary Healthcare Capital the “Small Business Investment Company of the Year.” In June 2013, DeFoor opened Embassy Suites of Chattanooga, recipient of the Embassy brand’s worldwide “Hotel of the Year” award for 2014. DeFoor’s Embassy was also named to Expedia Insiders’ Select list for both 2013 and 2014 while ranking #63 in the continental U.S. and #204 worldwide out of 290,000 eligible hotels.

DeFoor traces his success as a businessman back to the culture and circle of influence at two Seventh-day Adventist schools: Georgia Cumberland Academy and Southern Adventist University. In 1995, he joined the Alumni Awards Foundation Board, an Adventist nonprofit organization. In 2011, on behalf of the foundation, he began a quest to meet with the majority of leaders in the North American Division of Seventh-day Adventists regarding the future of secondary education. This work has impacted the success and future of secondary Adventist education by growing the number of grants, initiating conversations about the challenges facing our schools, and restructuring the management of several academies.

Collecting and racing historic sports cars are among DeFoor’s hobbies, and he also competes in the annual Rolex racing series. His team, 50 Plus Racing, raises funds for Alzheimer’s disease research. DeFoor lives in Ooltewah, Tennessee, with his wife, Susan, to whom he attributes his success because of her encouragement and support. They will celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary in June.

DeFoor’s philanthropic generosity to Southern is far reaching. He has impacted students’ lives through participation in capital projects such as the Hickman Science Center, Florida Hospital Hall, and Summerour Hall. Additionally, he has supported student scholarships, student services, The Southern Fund, and development of the Montessori School in partnership with the School of Education and Psychology.

In recognition of his contribution to society, Southern Adventist University is pleased to confer upon Byron DeFoor the degree Doctor of Laws for distinguished leadership in administration and public service.

The mace is a traditional symbol used to communicate and designate authority. The Southern Adventist University mace was crafted in 1986 by John Durichek, a Southern alum. Southern’s mace represents its heritage and raison d’être (reason for existence). The base is of pine from Jones Hall, built in 1917 and razed in 1985. The main staff is of walnut. The seven rings represent completeness. The four-sided ebony segment is seen as Southern’s underlying educational philosophy—balanced mental, spiritual, physical, and social development for each student. The brass flames represent the Holy Spirit. Bearing the mace is the grand marshal, Lorrain Ball, chair of the University Senate and professor in the School of Journalism and Commu-nication. Her regalia is evergreen, the university’s traditional color.
