Memo To:
James Johnsen, President of the University of Alaska System
From: Ryan J. Hill, Staff Council Co-President Elizabeth Winfree, Staff Council Co-President
Date: May 18, 2017
Re: UAA Chancellor Search
During the Staff Alliance meeting on May 3, 2017, you requested feedback from UAA’s Staff Council regarding the search process for UAA’s next Chancellor. On May 9, 2017, the Staff Council Co-Presidents requested feedback from voting members of Staff Council on two items:
1. What qualities would you like to see in UAA’s next Chancellor? 2. What suggestions do you have on how the search for the next Chancellor should look?
We have summarized our feedback in this memo for your review. Qualities Staff Council at UAA would like to see the following qualities in our next Chancellor:
A background in academia
Experience with diverse student populations
A strong communicator who is willing to engage the community in a frequent and transparent manner
Experience working in an environment of economic downturn
Open to innovative responses to budget shortfalls to avoid layoffs
Willing to monitor unnecessary expenditures
Cognizant of Alaska’s unique challenges and opportunities
Willing to engage with employees outside of the Chancellor’s office space and be visible around campus
A visionary who cares
A strong, fair leader
A listener who will consider all sides
In touch with all strata of the University
Focused on the safety of the community and compliance with regulations

Search Process Staff Council at UAA is concerned that the cost associated with hiring a search firm is unfeasible in this economic climate. Especially, considering a history of recent failed searches, we ask that you consider limiting the search for our next Chancellor to the state of Alaska where we hope to find a candidate who is familiar with our state and its current challenges. We also feel that a local candidate would be more likely to have the type of relationship with the Board of Regents, the legislature, and business leaders necessary to move the University forward. Staff Council would also like to express its support of Samuel Gingerich as Interim Chancellor, and suggest allowing Provost Gingerich to continue in this interim role for approximately two years to allow the state’s fiscal situation to correct itself.
Thank you for the opportunity to provide feedback on this important process. Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns regarding this memo.
Sincerely,
Ryan J. Hill, Staff Council Co-President Date

MOTION 2017-04 Staff Council Resolution Regarding Recognition of Appreciation Day
Planning Committee RESOLUTION: The Staff Council of the University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) approves the following resolution to offer gratitude and recognition to the organizers of the 2017 Appreciation Day that occurred on May 11, 2017 serving over 300 staff and faculty members. RATIONALE:
WHEREAS, Development Day has been a long-standing tradition at UAA, requiring hundreds of volunteer hours and months to organize, and
WHEREAS, Staff Council was asked to organize an event in place of Development Day with an extremely shortened time line, limited budget, and few volunteers, and WHEREAS, Kathy Lardner originally agreed to coordinate food trucks for the event then later became a main organizer, and WHEREAS, John Moore originally agreed to coordinate coffee for the event then later became a main organizer, and WHEREAS, Matthiue Ostrander provided invaluable technological and logistical support to Appreciation Day despite not being a member of the Council, and WHEREAS, the planning committee volunteered an overwhelming amount of time and energy to organizing an event larger than anyone originally anticipated, and WHEREAS, Staff Council was able to support a University-wide event that has an important history at the institution because of the individuals named in this resolution; THEREFORE, be it resolved Staff Council formally recognizes the efforts of Kathy Lardner, John Moore, and Matthiue Ostrander for the outstanding effort they volunteered to make Appreciation Day 2017 a success. This resolution shall be effective immediately upon passage. Respectfully Submitted, Ryan J. Hill Staff Council Co-President
