Year-at-a-Glance: Club Schedule For Quail Creek Fine Arts Painting Club members there is something hap-pening throughout the entire calendar year, but the bulk of our programs occur during the October through April time period. Here is an overview that will help you use this online catalog. Updates to the catalog occur on a regular basis. Fall 2016: We kick off the year with the “Come and Try It” workshop series. These appear on Pg. 5 in the catalog, followed by Fall offerings in date order. Classes usually last sev-eral weeks or more. Workshops and Seminars are shorter in duration. The Plein Air Group schedule for the year is located on Pg. 12. Winter/Spring 2017: After a holiday break, the “Come and Try It” work-shops repeat and clas-ses, workshops and sem-inars begin again. The Winter/Spring section of the catalog begins on Pg. 15. We slow down in the summer when many members are away, but offer a few informal work-shops and classes that will be announced via our newsletter or website as they are scheduled. The catalog concludes with general club infor-mation.

Open Studio All clubs in the CATC Building are required to have a trained monitor on duty whenever members are present. The QCFAPC shares the Fine Arts Studio with two other clubs. See the schedule below. Clubs must make time available for “open studio” during which members can work on their own projects. Given the limited number of hours the painting club has exclusive use of the studio, our large member-ship, and the full sched-ule of classes, the club has chosen a unique ap-proach to ensure mem-bers have plenty of choic-es for open studio time. During all of the hours the club has the room, two tables are set aside for “open studio” use. This means even when clas-ses, workshops and sem-inars are occurring, mem-bers can use these two designated tables for their own purposes. Open studio is not a way to take a free class, audit a class, or do any activity that takes away from the needs of students and teachers. Teachers serve as moni-tors for classes and have the right to ask anyone to leave the open studio tables, or to move as needed to another table. Open studio means you come and go as you please. Use it. Enjoy it. Don’t be afraid to come in when classes are under-way, just be respectful of your fellow painters.

The painting club relies on volunteers like Ric for everything we do.

Fine Arts Room Schedule

Only the times shown in green are designated for exclusive use by our club. The time

shown as “unscheduled” means all three clubs can use the room, but monitors for each

club have to be present. Since most painters prefer not to work when the gourd club

equipment is in use, we do not provide a monitor for unscheduled time. There are

some evening hours not currently in use. If members have an interest in having the

room open on Monday or Friday evening, please contact the president.

Description: Come and Try It Workshops Fall 2016

The Quail Creek Fine

Arts Painting Club pro-

vides members with a

unique opportunity twice

each year (October 2016

and January 2017) to try

a new art medium without

making a large invest-

ment.

From Thursday, October

6th through Friday, Octo-

ber 14th, a series of intro-

ductory workshops will be

offered. The club supplies

everything the student will

need, including profes-

sional instruction, for the

modest cost of $20 per

workshop.

In each workshop there

will be hands-on time with

the supplies and tech-

niques of that medium.

Small class sizes ensure

plenty of individual atten-

tion and a relaxed learn-

ing environment.

Take one workshop or

take them all. It’s your

choice, but remember

these are for “newbies”

and not for those with any

experience in the given

medium. A full schedule

of classes will follow

these “sampler” work-

shops.

Description: Mat Cutting Class One of the benefits of

being a member of the

QCFAPC is being able to

use the club’s beautiful

mat cutter.

In order to use the mat

cutter, instruction is re-

quired. Once you are cer-

tified, members can re-

serve a time for exclusive

use of the mat cutter.

When you learn to cut

your own mats, it im-

proves the presentation

of finished work and

saves you the expense of

paying for custom mats.

Whether you want to sell

your work or just keep it

for your own enjoyment, a

professional mat adds

value to your art.

Description: Plein Air Painting Group Plein Air painting began as a revolutionary idea in 19th-century France. The term “en plein air” de-scribes the act of painting outdoors using direct ob-servation of light. The QCFAPC Plein Air Painting Group has an exciting season of paint outs planned. Dates for each event are located to the right and times may vary as the seasons change. Details of each month’s paint out will be published in the club newsletter. Occasionally, plein air events will be timed to capture special events such as sunrise, moon-rise, or a sunset. Club members will be notified by email with details. Beautiful southern Arizo-na locations will provide the backdrop for painting the wonders of nature.

Description: Silk Scarf Adventure Workshop

Join member artist Janet

Brown for this fun one-day

workshop in the traditional

Japanese art of dyeing silk

scarves.

The focus of the workshop

will be on the shibori tech-

nique of arashi, in which the

fabric is bound to a pole and

then scrunched up prior to

applying the dye.

Once Janet demonstrates

the technique, each student

will have the opportunity to

create two scarves of their

own.

Time permitting, the serti

method of silk dyeing will

also be shown. This involves

the use of a “resist” applied

to the fabric and then dyed.

The end result allows for

images to appear on the

fabric.

Club In format ion QCFAPC Member Responsibilities

Safety: Approved substances for use in the Fine Arts Studio will be water, alcohol, masking flu-

ids, turpenoid, gamsol, household glues, painting oils and facilitators. Other hazardous substances such as varnish, fixatives, real turpentine, or aerosol sprays shall be used outside with proper caution and proper regard for the maintenance of the facility. Moni-tors shall be aware of the materials being used in the studio and take proper precautions.

No solvents shall be stored in the Studio. Members are responsible to bring their own supplies and take them home.

Procedures which cause a lot of dust will be performed outside. Monitors can request members change the configuration of easels, chairs, tables or oth-

er set up if they feel the current set up poses safety issues. Monitors shall check that each person entering the studio has been trained and certified

to use the studio and if not, shall conduct such training as is necessary. Procedures: Aluminum foil shall be used to line the studio easels drip shelf. These shall be installed

by each member as they begin to paint and shall be removed at the end of the session. Any wet paint shall be wiped off the easels if possible.

In order to keep the Studio clean, all members working with acrylics, oils, and pastels, will spread plastic drop cloths under easels and on table tops to protect these surfaces from paint and damage from solvents, etc. Please make sure that the drop cloth you use is resistant to the solvents you are using.

Members will be familiar with approved list of substances allowed in studio. No solvents shall be stored in the Studio. Members are responsible to bring their own supplies and take them home.

At the end of each session, easels and portable equipment shall be folded up and re-turned to the proper storage position. Even if an easel was set up when the member en-ters, from a previous class, it shall be put away at the end of class.

Each member’s personal workspace shall be cleaned and returned to its original condi-tion, if not better, before the member leaves the studio for the day. The Monitor shall in-spect the workspace before the member leaves. In certain cases, a fellow member or

teacher may assume responsibility for another’s workspace. A member who leaves the workspace in poor condition shall be notified. The second time a member leaves the workspace in poor condition they will be given a 30-day suspension from using the facili-ties. If it occurs again they shall be referred to the Club Board.

All members using the studio assume equal responsibility for cleaning sinks, surfaces, or equipment which is used by all equally. For instance, at the end of a class all members shall have responsibility for cleaning the studio and returning it to its original configura-

tion and condition. Ultimately it is the monitor’s responsibility to see that the studio is clean before the end of his shift, but it should not be the sole responsibility of the monitor; all members should participate.

All students will sign in as they enter the classroom. If they have not received proper training, the monitor will train them if time permits. Regular training sessions will be held and new members should attend to receive training.

Nothing should be left in the studio. Nothing removed from the studio.
