Current Problems• Motor applications require operational temps 160°C

while retaining 9800G in the market• Many permanent magnets are made of rare-earth

metals• Sources for the rare-earth metals are limited to a

few countries• Rare-earth permanent magnets have operational

temperatures above 150°C

• Magnetic exchange coupled core-shell nanomagnets without rare-earth metals – Core-shell nanomagnets (below 20 nanometers in diameter)

to replace rare-earths– Magnetic properties comparable to rare-earths (<20% loss in

magnetic energy) – Less expensive materials than current rare earths
