London is a cosmopolitan city, home to a great

mix of nationalities, cultures and beliefs. As an

international student at University of the Arts

London you will be part of a large community of

students from all over the world.

It’s a good time to live and study in the UK’s capital.

In a recent survey of cities, which measures their

image, power and appeal, London took first place. In addition, the capital has also won the title of

    most visited city.*

London is many things to many people. Here’s

what you can expect as a student.

    London is cultural

London’s museums and galleries are famous.

There are more than 200, too many to list, and

many of them are free to visit. There are also

around 100 major theatres and a thriving

alternative Fringe scene. London’s annual cultural

calendar includes London Fashion Week, Frieze

Art Fair, LIFT theatre festival, Social Media Week

and London Design Festival. There are more

than 30,000 music performances a year, plus

200 festivals, including major outdoor events like

    Lovebox and Notting Hill Carnival.

    London is surprising

The city is constantly changing, and has an

exciting ‘pop-up’ culture. What’s here today may

be gone tomorrow, but there’s always something

to do. Quirkiness is London’s speciality. In

    London you can:

Experience rooftop culture at venues like the

Queen of Hoxton in east London, where you can

see a film under the stars in summer or socialise

in an eight-metre high tipi in winter. Other rooftop

attractions include Frank’s pop-up café and bar

in Peckham, and Dalston Roof Park for theatre,

    film, gigs, barbeques and more.

Walk under the River Thames via the

Greenwich Foot Tunnel. Or fly over the water in

an Emirates Air Line cable car, and take a boat

courtesy of Thames Clippers from Greenwich toPutney, all at an affordable fare.

    Pretend you’re on a beach at Camden’s

    Roundhouse. Each summer, north London’s

legendary cultural centre imports 150 tonnes of

sand. Beach huts, music, ping-pong, food and

    drink complete the experience.

See art in the outdoors at London’s Fourth

Plinth in Trafalgar Square, or at other public art

sites across the capital, including the Southbank.See the work of street artists like Banksy on a

    special walking or cycling tour.

Admire the city skyline with great views for free

from the peaks of Greenwich Park, Telegraph,

    Parliament and Primrose Hills.

Follow First Thursdays. More than 130

galleries and museums in east London run free

events, talks, workshops, private views and

exhibitions during a special late opening until

9pm on the first Thursday of every month.

    London—the bestcity in the world

*Anholt-GfK City Brands Index 2013. Figures released by

Office for National Statistics in January 2014 found that visitor

numbers to London in the summer of 2013 beat all other

popular city destinations around the world.

Sample street food from around the world

and buy cut-price clothes. Shepherd’s Bush,

    Camden, Spitalfields, Borough, Portobello Road

and Broadway are just some of London’s markets.

Get on your bike. London’s parks offer

traffic-free cycling, as does its canal network.

At the newly opened Queen Elizabeth Olympic

Park in east London, you can cycle through the

wildflower meadows next to the River Lea, or

follow in the footsteps of athletes in the VeloPark.

Go for a swim in the open air. Outdoor

    swimming pools include London Fields,

Brockwell, Tooting Bec and Parliament Hill, while

Hampstead Heath has its own bathing ponds

    amid the trees.

Meet artists and designers in their ownstudios. London hosts many ‘open studio’

events, including Open House London and Arts

Unwrapped, which features 40 studios across

three weekends in May and June.

Visit the world’s first pop-up mall. BOXPARK

Shoreditch is completely made from shipping

containers. Other pop-up events across the

    capital include cinemas, restaurants, bars,

    supper clubs, shops, festivals, performances,

    fashion shows, workshops, galleries, gigs

    and gardens.

Studying arts and design in the UK may be a

very different experience to art and design study

in your own country. In the UK, for example,

emphasis is placed on the creative process, as

well as on mastering technical skills. This usually

    involves researching, developing ideas, and

exploring materials and methods. The last stage

of the process is the realisation of final pieces

    of work.

Although you will cover some theory, you will

take part in lots of practical workshops and

projects that are linked to the creative industries.

Independent learning is also a strong feature of

arts and design courses in the UK. You will be

encouraged to think for yourself and develop

your own ways of working. You will be given lots

of support from tutors and technical staff to help

    you do this.

Arts and design degrees in the UK are often more

specialised than in other countries. This will allow

you to focus on a specific area. This could be fine

art, costume design, graphic design or another

    subject you are interested in.

    Preparatory courses

UAL offers a range of courses that helpinternational students bridge the gap between

the education system in their own countries

and the UK. These courses prepare you for the

next level of study and help you to develop a

portfolio (evidence of your arts and design work).

The portfolio is an essential part of the application

for most practice-based arts and design courses.

Our main preparatory courses are listed as

follows. Details about course content and how to

apply can be found on our website.

Foundation Diploma in Art and Design

If you wish to study art and design at

undergraduate degree level in the UK (for

example, BA, BSc, FdA, FdSc), most universities

will expect you to have completed a preparatory

    course after leaving high school.

The Foundation Diploma in Art and Design is one

of the main routes into practice-based art and

design undergraduate courses at University of

the Arts London. The course usually lasts one

year. It will prepare you for higher education and

help you decide the specific subject you want to

    study at undergraduate level.

Students on one of UAL’s Foundation Diplomas

in Art and Design are guaranteed a place on

one of our undergraduate courses, if they meet

certain criteria. Students who have completed aFoundation Diploma in Art and Design at another

university will be accepted onto undergraduate

degree courses at UAL as long as they meet our

    entrance criteria.

    International Preparation for Fashion

    (Certificate of Higher Education)

This one-year course is taught at London College

of Fashion and is designed for internationalstudents. Successful completion will guarantee

you a place on one of London College of

Fashion’s undergraduate courses. It is an exciting

and challenging preparatory experience that will

allow you to explore your creative, academic and

professional potential in fashion. The English

language content of the course will ensure that

your English language skills are at an appropriate

    level for undergraduate study.
