My fellow Architects!

As the Incoming National President for the Fiscal Year 2010-2011, it is my

distinct pleasure to extend my most cordial felicitations both to the incoming and outgoing Officers and Members of the Board of the UAP Davao Chapter.

The UAP of today is vibrant, healthy, productive, and responsive institution, consistently ranked nationally and has been recognized as an outstanding professional organization, possessing excellent leaders who lead with passion and professionalism while being committed to volunteerism.

Hence, I encourage you to carry on the pursuit of the mission with the same commitment and dedication that your predecessors have displayed through the years. May you strive hard towards excellence and continue to work for the greater good of our organization. On the other hand, I enjoin you to support the present national leadership in its continuing quest for greatness and let us make the most of the opportunities that abound and face the challenges ahead as we work together in “REDEFINING SERVICE TO MEMBERS”.

In closing, I want to assure you that the national leadership of this great organization is fully committed to achieving excellence in every aspect of our mission, in fulfilling the plans and programs we have made to the UAP community and to the Architecture Profession in general.

Thank you for your support! Mabuhay ang UAP!

ARCH. RAMON S. MENDOZA, FUAP

National President

I would like to commend the United Architects of the Philippines – Davao Chapter for

your continued promotion of the architecture profession in the city for more than 30 years now.

Congratulations as well, on this third issue of SKETCH Magazine.

Similarly, I would like to congratulate the new set of UAP – Davao Chapter officers, led by Arch. Jean Marie Juanga. As architects, you design the backbone and structure of every edifice. Your skills and good judgment ensure that our buildings are structurally stable. As architects, you can literally make or break a building.

Your theme for this year zeroes in on the importance of service to the people. Aside from being responsive to their needs and staying attuned to the changing times, service also means guaranteeing that those who put their trust in your professional capacity receive only the best.

Your designs and your talents are the foundations of our city’s physical structural development. And I believe that under the continued guidance of UAP Davao’s architects, Davao’s future schools, hospitals, commercial establishments and homes will be as strong and sturdy as the ones we have now. Kudos and more power to UAP Davao and SKETCH Magazine!

SARA Z. DUTERTEDavao City Mayor

Allow me to convey my warmest congratulations to all elected officers of United Architects of

the Philippines – Davao Chapter, with special mention to its new President, Architect Jean Marie Villamor – Juanga during the ceremony endeavored for the 35th Chapter Induction of Officers and New Members on July 19, 2010, in time for the launching of your 3rd Sketch Magazine. With your theme: REDEFINING SERVICE OF MEMBERS, I welcome this invitation of UAP – Davao Chapter

which gave the imprint of promoting the architecture profession for more than three decades in our city. Included in our legislative agenda will be a study devoted to the assessment of our construction industry, more so, that our city is one of the preferred tourist destinations in our country. The United Architects of the Philippines – Davao Chapter is our valuable partner in our finest and largest agenda of boosting economic activity in our city. We always welcome this friendly gesture of exchanging warm thoughts and fellowship from the construction industry which is ably represented by your chapter. The formal investiture of officers and members signify a preliminary, yet, bold step towards strengthening the mutual confidence between the City Government of Davao and UAP. Again, congratulations to all of you. Mabuhay kayong lahat!

As your Vice President for Fiscal Years 2009-2011, allow me to congratulate both the incoming

and outgoing Officers and members of the Board of the UAP DAVAO Chapter.

Your new UAP Chapter Board of Officers take pride in the trust and support, that you have been bestowing upon us. We solicit the same support for the continuous achievement of our organization.

UAP is an institution known for quality, value centered, known for

service and outreach to the greater community; respected well within the Philippines as well as internationally.

As we aim for greater heights, I enjoin the Incoming Officers under the leadership of Arch. Jean Marie V. Juanga, uap to carry on the pursuit of the mission with the same commitment and dedication that your predecessors have displayed through the years. May you strive hard towards excellence and continue to work for the greater good of our Chapter as what the Outgoing Officers under the leadership of Arch. Francis Hidalgo did.

Again, congratulations!

ARCH. JEMMA SAROL-SEMAÑA, uapVice President Area D

My warmest greetings to the officers and

members of the UAP Davao Chapter on the occasion of your Turn-over and Induction Ceremonies.

To the outgoing chapter officers, I give my congratulations for steering the chapter into a very productive arm of the national organization in its quest for excellence.

For the incoming officers, I likewise give my commendations for the spirit of commitment they have extended to the organization in the attainment of goals and the achievement of programs and projects geared towards the profession, the professional, the professional product, and the professional organization.

Today is not just witnessing a transition in leadership, it is also a time to reflect upon your past chapter achievements and rededicate your efforts towards the upliftment of the Filipino architect. The national organization, on the other hand, is once again seeking your valuable contribution and support on this year’s theme of “Redefining Service to Membership”, vis-à-vis, the 10-year Long Range Plan.

Good Luck and Mabuhay ang UAP!

REY S. GABITAN, uapSecretary General (2010-2011)

On the occasion of your Chapter Induction of New Officers and Members, allow me to

congratulate the incoming set of chapter officers led by Chapter President Jean Marie V. Juanga, UAP, for accepting the great task of leading and administering your chapter. Your acceptance of the position comes with it the duties and responsibilities in ensuring that the chapter will achieve its vision and mission. Thus, more than the celebration, this occasion is the time to commit, to collaborate, and to continue to lead our professional organization to greater heights.

Your theme for this year “Social and Culture Change in the year of Service and Professionalism”, is very relevant because it is in line with the UAP Corporate theme for this year “REDEFINING SERVICE TO MEMBERS”. We have gone back full circle to the original objective of the formation of UAP, which is to provide the best SERVICE to our membership.

SERVICE to mean a Synergistic organization, with an Ebullient membership, who is Responsive to the times, always Vigilant against abusive internal and external forces, with an Impartial and Committed leadership ready to serve, in order to achieve an Enriching environment to the Filipino architects.

This is also an occasion to pay tribute to our past chapter officers and leaders who have paved the way for your chapter to become one of the most accomplished chapter of the United Architects of the Philippines.

Let us therefore continue to commit ourselves in strengthening the UAP and protecting our profession through a strong foundation of unity and integrity.

Ang Galing ng ARKITEKTONG PILIPINO! Mabuhay ang UAP!

MICHAEL T. ANG, fuap, APEC architectNational Executive Vice President (2009-2011)

With great enthusiasm, I salute and extend my warmest congratulations

to the UAP Davao Chapter on its Induction Day.

The active participation of its officers and members in the activities and development of the organization is indeed a major accomplishment of the outgoing Administration. It will be a great challenge for the incoming UAP Davao Chapter officers and members to commit to achieve more for the upliftment of the chapter and the organization as a whole.

Without every member’s participation, all endeavors to achieve everyone’s aspirations becomes a meaningless effort.

Bringing the Chapter Induction to the Joint District level once again in the coming future is the achievement of a dream of true camaraderie and unity within the Profession and the organization.

Once again, to the incoming and outgoing sets of officers of the UAP Davao Chapter and its members, my best wishes in stepping forward to achieve your goals for the success of our Profession and the UAP.

Mabuhay!

ARCH. RAMONITO G. OCTAVIANO, UAPRegional District Director D-1

It is with great honor and gratitude that I was entrusted the

responsibility of leading UAP Davao Chapter in this year’s national theme Redefining Service “of” Members. UAP Davao with its milestones of achievement has already proven its leadership, integrity and service to the profession. In fact, our late fellows Arch Johnny Sulit is

iconize as the “Grand Pillar of the South” and the late Arch Anselmo Ferrazzinni as the “Architect-maker of building corporate identity in structures” both of whom are well respected in their own light. Given these breed of members, it is because of their legacy that we are proud to be part of UAP Davao, and we must continue the legacy that these men have left behind. Moreover, we must not work simply to continue their legacy but move further to extend another milestone of service.

In the thrust of the Incoming Board which is “Professionalism in Service and Leadership”, may we find true meaning in service without glory or compensation. May we rekindle our commitment to serve the chapter more vigilantly and become not only a professional organization but as a civic organization with the aim of giving glory to the Great Architect who has made each Chapter of our lives more worth living.

In our role as Architects, may we become more resilient in these globally competitive times and move on to fulfill our purpose as Filipino Architects of the new era. Given the ideals of Professionalism in Service and Leadership; Dynamic Creativity; Environmental Nurturance; Cultural Sensitivity; Work Excellence and applying these ideals, is the fortitude of Architecture at its best. It is the expression of life in its most ultimate and meaningful form.

Again with deep pride, gratitude and positive endeavor in my incoming term as President, may we unite and serve UAP Davao to our utmost ability, leaving our personal differences aside and become professionals in our dealings. Congratulations and Mabuhay ang UAP Davao.

JEAN MARIE V. JUANGAIncoming Chapter PresidentUAP Davao Chapter

It was a fast and furious year!

Eleven months in the blink of an eye. I was pondering what to write you guys -- I

can fill up this page with all our accomplishments and successes which you already know, or I can just tell you how the year was for me as President.

Being a president of an organization like the UAP Davao is never an easy task. Good leadership is very, very hard to

accomplish. It would have been nice if I was there and everyone else served me, but a Presidency is never like that. Leadership is never like that. Setting goals for the organization and trying to reach them – now THAT is being a President.

For the previous fiscal year, our goals were quite formidable. There was the World Day of Architecture, the National Architecture Week (NAW), and our well attended Monthly Board Meetings and General Membership Meetings. We also had to organize Defining Spaces 3.

We were tasked to help organize the First Conference of Mindanao Architects. Hindi lang iyan -- sumayaw pa tayo for the Island of Mindanao in the National Conference, at alam niyo na kung ano ang nangyari, ‘di ba?

We also had our share of media time -- we were featured on TV after we donated chairs for the massage therapists in Rizal Park. We also organized the Rizal Park stage design competition, as per the request of our City Mayor herself.

And before my term ended, nag huling hirit pa tayo as a participant in the first PhilConstruct Mindanao construction show.

We the chapter accomplished many other things. Not only did we maintain a high number of attendees during our monthly General Membership Meetings, but also a high number of non-officers and board members participating and sharing their time to ensure the success of the year’s activities. That, perhaps, is our greatest achievement.

Two of our dear friends, Arch. Johnny Sulit and Arch. Anselmo Ferrazzini, have gone ahead of us. I’d like to dedicate this year’s work to them, for without their guidance, help, and advice, UAP Davao would be a very different organization today.

Being a President is hard, but with officers, members, and Past Presidents sharing the load, this task becomes very enjoyable. Let us all continue serving without expecting anything in return, except all the good our organization will do to our profession. I have served my tour of duty for one year, and I am very proud of all we have accomplished. I thank God Almighty for giving me the strength and wisdom for this task. I would like to thank my whole Board for their unwavering help and support. I would like to thank all our Sponsors for making all our activities possible. I would like to thank all the Student Assistants who helped us in all our national activities. I would like to thank all our Past Presidents for their guidance. I would like to thank all our Members here and abroad who have kept in touch not only physically but virtually. Finally, I would like to thank those who sacrificed the most, my family.

Mahal ko kayong lahat. May the spirit of service be always with you.

In Davao City, the development of architectural associations began in the 1950’s with the creation of the Davao Association of Civil Engineers and Architects (DACEA). The organization, though, did not last long, as the architects eventually separated to form the Association of Davao Architects (ADA) in 1960 and was granted chapter affiliation in March 1964 by the League of Philippine Architects (LPA). ADA’s first president-elect was Arch. Ramon Basa, the first licensed architect to work in Davao, who was inducted into office by Arch. Antonio V. Banas, then LPA National President. Other ADA presidents who followed were Arch. Johnny Sulit (1964-65 and 1967-69) and Arch. Pedro Sandoval (1966-67).

Among the projects undertaken by ADA was the holding of the first Regional Convention of Filipino Architects in Davao City on March 23, 1971. The activity was realized with the cooperation of the Association of Government Architects (AGA) and the Council of Filipino Architects (CFA).

On May 18, 1975, in compliance with PD 233, ADA sponsored a symposium on the integration of all architectural associations under the banner of the United Architects of the Philippines (UAP). A month after, the Executive Board presented a proposal to the General Membership to dissolve the organization and integrate with all other associations under the banner of the UAP.

Immediately upon the approval of the proposal, Arch. Florencio Gavino, Arch. Roman Solitaria and Arch. Johnny Sulit were appointed as UAP Regional Coordinators for Regional Council District (RCD)

VII, which comprised the whole of Mindanao. The Chapter By-Laws was ratified by the UAP National Convention on December 20, 1975. On February 20, 1976, Arch. Pedro Sandoval was elected Chapter President. UAP Davao Chapter was formally chartered by then UAP

National President Jose Herrera on March 25, 1976. The architects who sat as Regional Directors for Region XII (comprising the entire Mindanao) from the period covering the years 1975 until 1982 were from the UAP Davao Chapter. They were Arch. Johnny S. Sulit (1976-1980), Arch. Fernando S. Tuason (1980-1081), Arch. Roman T. Solitaria (1981-1982) and Arch. Omar Luis J. Payumo (1991-1993).

In 1979 Arch. Manuel N. Chiew became the president of the Chapter. PRC Board commissioner Norberto Noque came to Davao to have a dialogue with Architects practicing without a valid license and professionals practicing design and build scheme without the license to practice Architecture. Soon after, these illegal practices stop.

In 1982, with the aim of developing understanding, friendship and unity with other professional associations in Davao City, members of UAP Davao spearheaded the creation of the Architects, Plumbers and Engineers (APE) Sportsfest Association. They successfully organized tournaments which saw the participation of the Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers, National Master Plumbers Association of the Philippines, Geodetic Engineers of the Philippines, Integrated Institute of Electrical Engineers, Philippine Society of Mechanical Engineers and the Philippine Institute of Chemical Engineers. These professional organizations were also invited to participate in the conferences sponsored by the Chapter.

Through the initiative of Arch. Johnny Sulit, then Chapter President, the Chamber of Real Estate and Builders Association of Davao was established in June 1982. Another project initiated by the Chapter was the holding of an Inter-Chapter Regional Conference in Cagayan de Oro City on October 22-24, 1982. Davao Chapter was also awarded Best Provincial Chapter by the UAP.

Under the term of Arch. Pedro Sandoval the following year, Arch. Emilio Gellido was appointed as the Chairman of the Regional Council on Ethics for RCD VII by the UAP National Board. In 1985, with Arch. Jaime Ansaldo as Chapter President.

During the presidency of Arch. Omar Luis Payumo in 1986, UAP Davao presented the first “Kris at Kalasag” Award to Arch. Sulit. That year, Arch. Sulit and Arch. Manuel Chiew became members of the UAP College of Fellows. Other significant projects undertaken under Arch. Payumo’s term were the first joint effort between architects and architecture students of UM in celebrating the Nationwide Architecture Week; and the observance of the Architect’s Memorial Day in honor of the architects of Davao City who have passed away.

The year 1987 was a distinguished year for UAP Davao under the leadership of Arch. Jose Pasco, Jr. as the Chapter received its second Best Provincial Chapter award during the 13th National Convention in Manila. The Chapter’s first Best Provincial Chapter award was given three years earlier during the presidency of Arch. Sulit.

In 1988, during the first term of Arch. Prospero Abellano as Chapter President, UAP Davao Chapter won again as the Best Provincial Chapter, the third time it won the award. That year, the Chapter successfully hosted the 18th UAP Regional Conference for Visayas and Mindanao.

With Arch. Percival David at the helm in 1989, the UAP Butuan (Sidlakang Mindanao) Chapter was created with Davao Chapter as its mother chapter. The following year, under Arch. Warly de Mata, UAP further expanded with the creation of the UAP Empire Province of Cotabato Chapter and UAP Mt. Apo Chapter. Arch. Sulit served as District Director at that time.

The year 1991 was Arch. Abellano’s 2nd term as Chapter President. Among the projects undertaken under his leadership were the UAP Davao scholarship grants through the DSWD for 26 street children, the circulation of the quarterly UAP Davao Newsletter; the generation of funds for the establishment of a local UAP secretariat, and the construction of a monument to honor the National Artist, Architect and Educator Victorio Edades. The said monument was presented by the Chapter to the city government of Davao on January 30, 1992 during the presidency of Arch. Benjamin Panganiban.

1993 was a truly meaningful year with Arch. Flora J. Lumayno, then Chapter president, initiating socially relevant programs. Activities included the procurement and donation of school materials to the SOS Children’s Village; scholarship grants for deserving architecture students of University of Mindanao; and rice donations for the street children of Lingap Center. Collaborative

effort with the UAP Mt. Apo Chapter ensured the success of various product presentations, conferences, sports competitions and fellowships. The most important project to cap the fiscal year was the establishment of the first cooperative for the benefit of Davao’s architects – the Architectural Ventures Multipurpose Cooperative.

Arch. Anselmo Ferrazzini’s term in 1994 proceeded with the Intrex Philippines’ Second Mindanao International Building and Construction Show and the First East Asean Buildex ’95. This was followed by the participation of UAP Davao Chapter members in the East Asean Business Convention.

In 1995, with Arch. Ma. Concepcion Dy as president, the chapter hosted the National Conference of Architects. The well organized national affair not only brought out the leadership potentials of the members but also focused the attention of the chapter to the national level of recognition by garnering the Best Chapter Award, Provincial Level.

Exposure of the chapter, membership development and district unity were the prime thrust of the 1996 administration led by Arch. Jay Mendoza. One successful chapter project launched during this period was the weekly column entitled, “UAP Davao Chapter” authored by Arch. Michael Angelo E. Dakudao, Ph.D. featured in the Sun Star Periodiko Davao. Arch. Mendoza also gave emphasis on the development and improvement of architecture students by establishing the first University of Mindanao UAP Student Auxiliary (UMSA) in March 1997. As highlight to Arch. Mendoza’s administration, the UAP Davao Chapter Secretariat Office, located along Bonifacio St.,

Davao City, was formally opened and put into operation in tie-up with the Architectural Ventures Multi-Purpose Cooperative which was initiated during the term of Arch. Flora Lumayno.

The first District-Wide Joint Induction Ceremony was realized during the term of Arch. Agustin Narciso in August 1997, which brought together architects of the UAP chapters of Davao, Mount Apo, Socsksargen and Cotabato to the Davao Convention Center. It set the precedence for cost-cutting measures in the holding of UAP induction ceremonies of chapters under D-1 in succeeding years.

Arch. Manuel Rosales’ term in 1998, focused on architectural education. Among the highlights of his administration was the exhibit entitled, “Encounter: The Vernacular Paradox of Israeli Architecture,” held at the lobby of the Royal Mandaya Hotel on February 15 to 25, 1998. The said event was formally opened to the public by the ambassador of Israel to the Philippines,

the Honorable Ilan Baruch. Another project under Arch. Rosales’ term, implemented by Arch. Dakudao, was the first educational field trip of the Ateneo de Davao University’s first batch of architecture students to the internationally acclaimed Pearl Farm Resort on September 18, 1998. This project was followed by a special lecture on Spanish Architecture by Dr. Pablo Prados Ruano from Madrid, upon the invitation of Arch. Dakudao. It was also during this term that the UAP Davao published the Centennial Souvenir Program for district D-1.

Under Arch. William Yong’s leadership in 1999, the Chapter initiated the Davao City Entrance Arch design competition. This was in cooperation with the Davao Beautiful Foundation. Another milestone for the Chapter that year was the elevation of Arch. Payumo and Arch. Abellano to the College of Fellows.

The Chapter also co-hosted, with the Mt. Apo Chapter, the NCCA National Touring Exhibition, entitled “Arkitekturang Filipino: Spaces and Places in History” at the Apo View Hotel from August 5 to 12, 2000.

The year 2000 marked the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the United Architects of the Philippines Davao Chapter. Arch. Wilfredo Z. Policarpio’s program focused more on socially relevant projects such as blood donations from architects to the Philippine Red Cross; visiting orphanages and contributing to their food, clothing and medical needs; and various fund raising projects. A significant endeavor of the Chapter that year was the staging of the UAP Davao Foundation.

At the start of a new century, Arch. Amina Mababa, 2001 Chapter President, devoted her time in achieving financial viability, organizational stability, efficiency and effectiveness. She continued the UAP Davao tradition of organizing socially relevant activities and educational programs, which included a tour for architects and architecture students to the new Davao International Airport. In cooperation with the UAP Student Auxiliary from the Ateneo de Davao University, the University of Mindanao and the University of the Philippines-Mindanao, the Chapter celebrated Nationwide Architecture Week (NAW) with a motorcade, exhibits, painting contest, sportsfest and a fellowship party. To supplement UAP funds, a Bingo Month was held, in cooperation with PAGCOR, at the Grand Regal Hotel in February

2002.In 2002, Arch. Manuel de Luna became the 27th

UAP Davao Chapter President. His administration continued the usual chapter activities done annually like the Red Cross blood donation, APE Sportsfest, and the observance of the Nationwide Architecture

Week. Other activities held were the Student Design Competition and Lecture-Workshop on Origamic Architecture by Arch. Ramon Tanglao. Highlight for the year 2002 included the hosting of the 11th National Conference of Architects (NCA-11) and the 7th UAP Student Auxiliary Area C Assembly in Davao City. Under De Luna’s administration, exploratory talks with the Philippine Institute of Architects (PIA) Davao Section and the UAP Mt. Apo Chapter were initiated in a concerted effort to come up with the “Architect’s Forum,” a venue where issues and concerns regarding the practice of the architecture profession in the city can be aired.

Arch. Noel B. Chavez, UAP Davao Chapter President for 2003, continued where the previous term left off. Despite the transfer of some UAP Davao members to the newly chartered UAP Kadayawan Dabaw Chapter, he consolidated the membership line-up by undertaking an aggressive campaign to recruit new members and encourage inactive members to revert to active status. He initiated activities to strengthen camaraderie among members like the Mid-Year Outing and Coastal Cleanup in Babusanta, Talikud Island on September 13, 2003, Christmas Party at Eden Mountain Resort and the UAP Davao Chapter Anniversary Outing on March 29, 2004 in Binugao, Toril. Other activities included the Red Cross blood donation, APE Sportsfest and seminar on roofing system at U.P. Mindanao. Another highlight during the term of Arch. Chavez was the joint observance of Nationwide Architecture Week among UAP Davao, Mt. Apo and Kadayawan-Dabaw Chapters. Activities included a motorcade, finger painting, on-the-spot painting contest, public lectures, tree planting, product presentations and tours, and a courtesy call to the Office of the City Mayor. A culmination night of the week-long celebration was held at Linmar Davao on December 6, 2003, which also coincided with the induction ceremony of the incoming officers of the UAP Student Auxiliary chapters of Ateneo de Davao University and U.P. Mindanao.

Arch. Alvin Alladin’s term in 2004 started with a unique outdoor Hawaiian-inspired Chapter Induction at the poolside of Waterfront Insular Hotel. This was followed by several socio-civic activities which included a gift-giving and visit to a day care center for indigents in Agdao; coastal cleanup in Daliao, Toril; Red Cross blood donation; Brigada Eskwela at the Teodoro

Palma Gil Elementary School; and tree planting in Toril. During the observance of World Architecture Day, the Chapter sponsored an architectural rendering contest among architecture students in the city. It was during the presidency of Arch. Alladin that the first Inter-School Architecture Quiz Bowl was staged at NCCC Mall during the celebration of the Nationwide Architecture Week. Other NAW activities held that year were a motorcade, In Situ Architectural Rendering Competition, simultaneous free architectural consultation at major Davao City hardwares, the “Hottah! Hottah!” Christmas Party at Costa Marina Resort in Samal Island, and the launching of the UAP Davao Chapter monthly newsletter, Imprint.

UAP Davao reached another milestone in 2005-06 as the Chapter celebrated its 30th charter anniversary. It was during that fiscal year when Arch. Ericson Europa assumed the leadership as the 30th president of the Chapter. One of the highlights of his term was the joint effort among all UAP chapters in Davao City and the Philippine Institute of Architects Davao Section to lobby in the Sangguniang Panglungsod for the implementation of RA 9266 (the Architecture Act of 2004) in the city and the establishment of the position of City Architect. Arch. Europa continued on with the socio-civic and educational activities initiated during the past administrations. This included a coastal cleanup and mangrove planting in Punta Dumalag and the Heritage Churches exhibit at UP Mindanao. He also spearheaded a physical fitness program wherein members had an opportunity to indulge in regular sports activities such as basketball, bowling and badminton. As in the past celebrations, the NAW 2005 was highlighted by several events. This included a motorcade, the 2nd Inter-School Architecture Quiz Bowl, the 3rd In Situ Architectural Rendering Competition, architecture exhibit, NAW Invitational Basketball Tournament, free architectural consultation, academic lectures, and the Chapter Christmas Party in Binugao, Toril. The 30th charter anniversary on March 25, 2006 was a momentous event for the Chapter. The whole-day celebration included a thanksgiving mass at St. Paul Parish Church in Juna Subdivision, breakfast salu-salo at Café Juna, orphanage visit at the Missionaries of Charity Center, and lunch fellowship with former UAP Davao members at Citihardware Matina. It was also under the presidency of Arch. Europa when the formation of a UAP chapter in Davao del Norte was initiated.

When Arch. Daniel Lim assumed the presidency of the Chapter in 2006, his main focus was for the Chapter’s financial stability. Aside from tapping the well-established member-architects of UAP Davao, particularly Arch. Manuel Chiew, in the solicitation

of funds, he was able come up with innovative ideas to increase the Chapter’s finances. After the successful Induction of Officers and New Members held at Marco Polo on July 25, 2006, other highlights of Arch. Lim’s term was the chartering of the UAP North Davao Chapter, the hosting of the Area D Assembly by UAP Davao on February 27, 2007 at the Grand Men Seng Hotel, and the UAP Davao 31st Anniversary celebration at Paradise Island Resort on April 14, 2007.

During the presidency of Arch. Evito R. Salac in 2007-2008, he dreamed to strengthen the integrity, capability and capacity of architects as well as the unity and bonding among members. One of the main highlights of the successful programs and activities was the regular Continuing Professional Education (CPE) with relevant topics to the profession in every GMM.

He continued the traditional Community Projects, which includes Brigada Ekswela, Run for Peace and the Dental and Medical Mission at Daliao, Toril, Davao City and strengthened the high moral values of members by having the First Architects Values formation during his memorable birthday last October 18, 2007 at Grand Men Seng Hotel. He further initiated significant bonding program through sports to develop camaraderie such as Bowling and Badminton tournaments. UAP Davao joined for the very first time on the Arkilympics during the National Architects Conference 2007 at Cebu City and won 1st runner up in Badminton, 2nd runner-up in bowling and played in the elimination round in basketball tournament. UAP Davao celebrated the World Architecture Day on October 2007 at Philippines Women’s College of Davao with a Heritage Churches of the Philippines Exhibit and On-The-Spot Painting Contest of San Pedro Church participated by architecture students in the city. In the 2007 NAW, UAP Davao highlighted the event which includes the 3rd NAW basketball Tournament, 3rd Inter-School Architecture Quiz bowl and the 4th City Hall Building Architectural Rendering Competition. The Chapter’s first construction show, Defining Spaces- the first Architectural Exhibit of Exterior and Interior Spaces held on March 2008 at SM City Davao was the major project of his tenure. It was then during his time that the UAP Davao Lot Fund was created for the future office building of UAP Davao Chapter. UAP Davao celebrated its 32nd Charter Anniversary with a Night of Architectural Excellence honoring the charter members and recognizing the past presidents of UAP Davao at the Grand Men Seng hotel in March 2008. In April 2008, UAP Davao received the two prestigious Awards from UAP National – the 2007-2008 Best Chapter Award and Hall of Fame Award given by the UAP National President Arch. Medelino T. Roldan, Jr.

It was another banner year for the chapter, under the leadership of Arch. Agatha Ellen Salanatin-Valencia, as it hosted the 17th National Conference of Architects (NCA-17), said to be the last for the UAP. It was during this successful national event that acting City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio signed the Administrative Order

to fully implement RA 9266 in Davao City. Her term also saw the creation of the Council of Chapter Past Presidents, whose purpose is to have a venue for the Past Presidents to serve as the advisory body of the Chapter Board. Aside from the regular chapter and national activities like the 37th Nationwide Architecture Week, the 5th Area Assembly, and the 35th National Convention, other notable activities were the UAP Davao Basketball Cup 2008, the NCCA Photo Touring Exhibit of National Artists, and the Defining Spaces Part 2 (DS-2). The chapter was also inducted into membership to the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc., and sponsored the chartering of the newest UAP chapter, UAP Davao Alpha. There were also socio-civic projects like the Mangrove Planting at Punta Dumalag, the Gift Giving to Bago Aplaya schoolchildren, and the visit to the Davao City Female Jail. Fellowship activities after the NCA-17 and DS-2, and the Chapter’s Summer Beach Outing. And for the first time in UAP Davao history, the chapter conducted the Asian Study Tour to Hong Kong and Macau on August 2009, an activity seen as the product of all the hard work that this group has achieved. The Chapter garnered 3 awards to cap the fiscal year: Most Active Chapter in Mindanao, Model Chapter for District D1, and a recognition for hosting the NCA-17.

The Fiscal Year 2009-2010 fell under the charge of Arch. Francis Gerard SJ. Hidalgo. Among the successes achieved by his administration was the holding of the first-ever Conference of Mindanao Architects on October 22-24 at Pearl Farm Resort, Island Garden City of Samal. The UAP Davao Chapter led the Davao-based Organizing

Committee by shouldering all tasks related to Programs and Planning. The 1st Conference of Mindanao Architects has been lauded as one of the UAP’s biggest successes in 2009.

Perhaps one of the more exciting and rewarding initiatives headed by Arch. Hidalgo was an expanded lineup of Nationwide Architecture Week (NAW) activities, which were positively received by suppliers, students, and architects alike. The event was held on the first week of December 2009, and there was a clamor from all sides for more activities next year.

During Arch. Hidalgo’s term, then-Vice-Mayor Sara Z. Duterte also approached the chapter, requesting for its services in the redesign of the Rizal Park Stage. The City Government was able to choose among several submitted entries during the UAP Davao’s annual design exhibit, Defining Spaces 3.

Another notable achievement by the UAP Davao Chapter was its inclusion in the PhilConstruct Mindanao 2010 construction show, an activity of the Philippine Constructors Association (PCA) -- a sign that the UAP Davao Chapter is indeed front-and-center in the Mindanao architectural scene.

ARCH. JOHNNY SULIT, fuapThe Builder and Healerby Lysette N. Sandoval

The name Johnny Sulit had always painted a smile on people’s faces but the person behind that name had made every moment with him, all the more worthwhile. People who knew Johnny would often smile with just the thought of him. he had touched their lives and of so many other people in so many different ways. Johnny was the architect father that every child would be pride of. he was an architect by heart and that heart was filled with great love for his profession especially his organization. Johnny was an architect turned healer in his charismatic works in the healing ministry. Through the years, Johnny had earned the trust and confidence of the people he worked with alongside the love and respect of his family especially his children because of how simply he lived his life. Johnny Sulit, as his friends fondly called him, had so much love for his family and his profession and it had become his tool for reaching out to people and changing their lives.

the Architect FatherIn the eyes of a son, Johnny was not the typical Filipino father because he rarely went out to drink. In fact, there was never a time when he would come home drunk and would do a roll call of his children to talk about his accomplishments as an architect. “he never told us about them,” his son recalls. The walls of his make shift office at home filled with plaques and citations from different organizations were witnesses to his great career as an architect. But beyond the success of his career was an equally successful family life. As his son recalls, their Sundays were spent at church then off to a sumptuous family lunch and the quiet afternoons at home. On other days, he remained to be the father figure with a meticulous eye for detail. he always looked at every detail as if making sure that the great demand for the continuity in grain was really achieved. At home, he would always tinker on something and everything. he always wanted everything to be perfect but he knew to himself that he was also full of imperfections.“My father was a great man but he was every inch humble, too” his son shares. There were years when he needed to travel but he never forgot to communicate with his children. As his son narrates, he never felt that his father was far from them. “he was magaling and strict.” It had become his trademark not only as a father of the family but as head of their organization as well. he joked around a lot just to make things light when everybody seemed to be so stressed and pressured.

the Builder in JohnnyWhen his son was asked how his father started his career as an architect, he smiled and said, “It was all because he didn’t want to line up.” he was standing in the long line during enrollment in the College of Medicine at the University of Santo Tomas when he saw that the line in the other building wasn’t as long. And so he decided to leave and line up in the other building where he didn’t have to wait long to get himself enrolled. At first, it had seemed like an act of laziness on his part but when he ranked third place in the board exam a year after he graduated from the College of Architecture nobody could say he was not meant for it. Perhaps it was really the hand of God that made him move colleges early on.“Your building has got to have a personality. Build it and make sure that all its parts are functional,” Johnny would always remind his apprentices. Johnny was the kind of man who saw the beauty in everything. he often joked around and saw great joy in making people smile. he never fails to amuse his family and friends with his jokes. In fact, whenever people talked about how good an architect he was, he would often tell them the story of how he became number one in the board exam. Two years after he earned his degree, he decided to take the architecture board exam to take his career plans to the next level. Luckily, he got the third spot among all those who took the exam. Two years later, those who got the top two spots in the board exam saw themselves in unfortunate situations. One died in an airplane accident and the other got really sick. But Johnny’s optimism didn’t want sadness to linger and so he would jokingly say that he really got the top spot in the board exam during his time. And yes, he was really number one in eyes of those who love him.

Johnny the HealerBeyond that smile is the heart of a true soldier of God. he became an instrument in bringing together the architects into an organization where they were truly appreciated. he also had his share of Trophy projects that really showcased his God-given gift but those did not make him the great architect that people look up to now. his greatest achievement as an architect was in the years that he spent giving service to the organization. his colleagues would describe Johnny as the man who didn’t live for himself alone. In fact, he was one of the so called Pillars of the South, the epitome of architecture as a service profession. he always worked hand in hand with the other architects during his time. Theirs was the golden age of architecture showcasing not only the beautiful building plans they made, but the beautiful relationship they shared as members of the UAP. “Johnny was the man who gave almost half of his life to the organization,” a colleague shares. his life as a service architect had taught him that he could always do something more for the community. One of his great works is the parish of St. Paul. It was one of those structures that were built with great pride because it was not a mere building. It was going to be the house of God and his people. every part of the structure was functional yet modern. One of the great lessons Johnny Sulit shared to his colleagues that inspired a lot of emerging architects was his great love for his profession. Architecture was not a mere profession for money. It was, for him, a public service profession.

“It is not how much money you have made, but how much talent you have

shared with others.” - Arch. Johnny Sulit

ARCH. ANSELMO FERRAZZINI, fuapA Legacy of Design and Joy

By Jhoanna Lynn B. Cruz

“How could you NOT notice Elmo? He was good-looking, well-mannered, and irresistibly happy. He’s a character we all won’t soon forget.”-- Arch. Cecile Hidalgo

“Architect-maker of building corporate identity in structures.”-- Arch. Jean Marie Juanga

“Want to know how much my husband loved his job? The day before he passed away, he was still checking drawings on his hospital bed. He signed the plans for two entire projects to begin construction. I don’t think anyone enjoyed his last day on Earth more than Elmo.”-- Mylene Ferrazzini, Elmo’s wife

When Archt. Anselmo Ferrazzini passed away on June 12, 2010, almost everyone in the industry was shocked and saddened. They had heard he was in the hospital, but few knew how serious his condition was because he had kept working despite it. His wife, Mylene, reveals that he had a mini-office in his hospital room, where he was checking and signing plans even on the day before his passing. His daughter Mary “Nikki” Dominique shares that in his last weeks, she never heard him complain – not about the pain, the inconvenience, or his dying. In fact, he had even promised to attend the strategic planning of UAP Davao “if he felt better.”

He was not to get better. After four years of battling liposarcoma, his body finally gave up, but his spirit lives on, in his legacy as an architect, and more importantly, as a man.

Elmo, as he was fondly called, started A.S. Ferrazzini Architects & Project Managers in 1990. With his talent and skill and passion, he went on to complete over Php 1 billion projects in such diverse locations as Davao, Cebu, Bicol, Manila, and Indonesia. His multiple and dispersed projects earned him in 2002 the distinction of becoming the youngest UAP Fellow for Design of Davao Chapter. Then in 2009, to recognize his great achievement, UAP Davao gave him the Kris at Kalasag Award, the highest award given to its members. As UAP Davao President in 1994, he led the organization in its first East Asian Buildex, as well as the East Asean Business Convention. Through his able leadership, UAP Davao also joined the Intrex Philippines Second Mindanao International Building and Construction Show, which paved the way for more networks outside of the Philippines.

His niche remains commercial/industrial structures, for which he strove to create a distinct corporate identity visible in the buildings. While other architects would focus on the functionality of a structure, or their own design proclivities, Ferrazzini designed not only buildings, but brands. Starting with banks like RCBC, Banco Filipino, and BPI, he went on to build his most recognizable project, the EMCOR Head Office building. The EMCOR structure features distinct white-washed walls with glass-on-aluminum showcase windows, which is replicated in its other branches in the Philippines.

Infecting his team with his ideals, particularly the primacy of the client’s vision, Ferrazzini worked on the Davao Doctors Hospital Medical Arts Tower, the Davao Light & Power Corporation, the Insular Hotel, among many other distinct structures. In particular, the two-hectare Lapanday Box and Plastic Plant in Buhangin, Davao City shows how he was able to work with a large-scale industrial structure and infuse it with concern for the environment.

Another trademark of Ferrazzini as an architect is evident in his few residential projects, in which he proves that the unusual topography of a site can be utilized to full advantage. This was particularly evident in his designs of houses perched on hills, like the Haegg-Narra residence in Maa, Davao City. With the irregularly shaped lot and moderate slope, Ferrazzini created a unique house that at street level appears to be a one-story structure, but actually has five atypical levels. To take advantage of the breathtaking views provided by the location, every important room in the house, as well as hallways and staircases, is oriented towards the east. It even has, not one, but two roof decks facing east and west. This skillful eye for working with the demands of the natural environment is also evident in his design for a chapel in Indonesia built around a river. Without actively advocating for green architecture, he has proven that architecture does not have to take a slash-and-burn approach to the site.

His de facto design philosophy of always putting the needs and lifestyle of the client over his own style was manifest as well in his relationships with people.

Elmo was a much-beloved man. His only request before he passed away was that no wake be held for him; that a party be thrown instead -- a gathering of friends. True enough, more than 200 people attended his final party, friends who all had their stories to share about how Elmo had somehow touched their lives. Archt. Mike Madrazo, who had been his apprentice, shares: “I wanted to be like him, to be professional like him…I even wanted to look like him! Now more than ever, I really do want to be like him – unstoppable and unashamed in his pursuit of happiness.” The architects who knew him had a genuine appreciation of his work and his personality. Archt. Cecile Hidalgo adds, “How could you not notice Elmo? He was good-looking, well-mannered, and irresistibly happy. He’s a character we all won’t soon forget.” Throughout his twenty year practice, he welcomed many young architects as apprentices in his firm, and was always ready with advice about design and life. He even assisted UP Mindanao BS Architecture Program by endorsing support on its curriculum revision. When he fell ill with cancer, he expressed joy at having “lived up to my dreams and aspirations,” yet lamenting the fact that “there’s still so much to be done, to teach, to share, and to serve.”

Mylene shares that her husband worked so hard because he knew that his projects gave others work. He always respected and trusted her decisions as Administrative Officer of the firm. If he were a lesser man, and she a lesser woman, their relationship would have been combustible, but it was a true partnership to the end.

As a child, eldest daughter Nikki remembers her dad taking her with him to site inspections. But he never forced any of his three children to follow in his footsteps. He wanted them to do what makes them happy. He shared instead his joy at doing his job. So second child Alejandro is taking up Culinary Arts. But both Nikki and youngest child Raphael decided to become architects, assuring their father and the community somehow that the company would continue; that his life-work would not be in vain.

With the passing of Anselmo Ferrazzini, Davao did not just lose a great architect, but in Nikki’s words, “a wonderful gift.” He reminds us all of what truly matters: a great plan and the joy of the process.

It was a good beginning to a challenging year. But as always, the UAP Davao Chapter and its members are up to any challenge, and then some.

Last August 26-29, 2009, 26 members and friends of the UAP Davao Chapter set foot on Hong Kong on the chapter’s first ever Study Tour outside the country. The trip was a milestone for the chapter, and is seen as the first of many more in the years to come.

The four-day, three-night trip started in Hong Kong. The group was treated to the sights, sounds, and tastes of the Kowloon shopping district, Mong Kok.

On the second day, the group visited Jewellery City, Co., Aberdeen Harbour, Old Hong Kong, and Victoria Peak. That afternoon, they moved across the border to Shenzhen, China. A visit to a cultural museum introduced the group to Lychee Tea and glow-in-the-dark Moonstone.

The highlight of the day came at the last stop of the day tour -- the Windows Of The World theme park. The group visited replicas of famous landmarks around the world, and some of the braver ones tried out the park’s Ice Mountain -- the first sub-zero experience for many in the group.

The third day was Macau day. The group visited Alladin’s Place (one of Stanley Ho’s theme parks), the A-Ma Temple (and its very famous sweets shop), the ruins of St. Paul’s, and the Venetian Casino/Hotel.

The group capped the tour off with more Hong Kong-style shopping at Mong Kok and Temple Street Market, and some also made it to the Avenue of the Stars to view the Symphony of Lights.

By the end of the fourth day, the group had touched down in beautiful, beautiful Davao City. The memories of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, and Macau will remain fresh in their minds for a long, long time.

The Study Tour was a product of Arch. Agatha Ellen S. Valencia’s term (FY 2008-2009). It set the standard for future administrations to follow. (Mike Madrazo)

The UAP Davao Chapter celebrated the World Day of Architecture (WDA 2009) last October 5,

2009, by giving a little something back to nature -- in the form of planting trees.

Chapter President Francis Gerard SJ. Hidalgo led the tree planting activity. Fifty (50) rooted stalks of malibago saplings were planted along the banks of Talomo River in Brgy. Mintal, Tugbok. The malibago is a mangrove-like tree, with roots that spread far and wide and anchoring a greater volume of soil.

The activity was sponsored by Davies Paints and SMSC-Philmetal, and was participated by UAP Davao officers Noel Punay, Claudia Fernandez, Tanya Yahya, Victoria Barquin, Felmar Lao, and Ryan Songcayauon, who -- in perhaps one of the most memorable moments of the Fiscal Year -- was planted along the trees.

December 6-12, 2009 saw the entire country celebrate the 38th Nationwide Architecture Week. In keeping with its tradition, the UAP Davao Chapter celebrated it with the usual NAW activities -- and then some.

VP-Admin Claudia Fernandez, assisted by her ever-present sidekick Treas. Victoria Barquin, chaired the entire week and planned to hold several new activities this year.

The week kicked off first thing on Monday morning, when Chapter President Francis Hidalgo led the Davao City chapters in attending the flag ceremony in front at Rizal Park. He also presented a UAP plaque of appreciation to City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte for the Mayor’s strong and sustained support to the architectural profession in Davao City and the rest of the Philippines.

Later that morning, Dir. Ryan Songcayauon led 16 artistic students from UP, UM, and Ateneo to Osmena Park, where they held one of the mainstay activities of the UAP Davao NAW celebrations -- the On-The-Spot Rendering Contest. The students produced their own original, artistic renderings of the Museo, with surprisingly good results for such a short time frame.

Meanwhile, Arch. Tee Jay Garcia wrapped up the Basketball Tournament the previous weekend. Last year’s champions, the All-Star Barako team, defended their championship by coming out on top again. The Basketball Tournament awards were given on the last day of the Arkiweek -- which had its own share of events!

Saturday’s activities began at Regency Inn with the much-awaited Interschool Architecture Quiz Bowl, fondly known as the ArQuiz. Teams from the three architectural schools in Davao City competed against each other in a brain-picking event prepared by Incoming President Jean Marie Juanga. Her assistants included Dir. Ryan Songcayauon (behind-the-scenes preparations), Arch. Nory Nervaez (quizmaster), Arch. Mary Grace Sy (scorer and timekeeper), and -- who else? -- as the emcee.

Everyone was a winner this year -- the University of the Philippines (UP) swept the On-The-Spot Rendering Contest awards, Ateneo de Davao University became the new ArQuiz champions, and the University of Mindanao (UM) claimed top plum in the first-ever Sayaw Arkitekto Sayaw dance contest.

Pres. Francis Hidalgo, ever loving a great party, ended UAP Davao’s NAW 2009 celebrations by treating the students and architects to a hefty dinner and an enjoyable night of music and dancing. No doubt everyone went home happy that weekend, with sweet memories of yet another successful Arkiweek -- and fond expectations for next year’s celebrations. (Mike Madrazo)

Last September 4, 2009, UAP Davao donated ten (10) monobloc recliner chairs to SMILE, Inc., a group of reflexology therapists operating at Rizal Park, Davao City. The turnover ceremonies were graced by Councilor Mabel Sunga Acosta, and covered by ABS-CBN’s Onnie Alfaro (AKA Onnie 911).

SMILE, Inc.’s relaxing, inexpensive foot-massage services can be availed every evening at Rizal Park. Just look for the therapists -- they wear uniforms, ID’s, and have a signboard advertising their services near an island in front of the stage.

In October 2008, Davao City was given the privilege of holding the last National Conference of Architects (NCA) at Grand Regal Hotel,

Lanang. It was a bittersweet goodbye to a UAP tradition that spanned 17 years. But as they say -- the closing of one chapter is the opening of the next.

Hence, Davao City was once again the center of attention on October 22-24, 2009. The first-ever Conference of Mindanao Architects (CMA) was held at the Pearl Farm Beach Resort, at the Island Garden City of Samal.

The event took place over two days, with the Opening Ceremonies, Seminars, Product Presentations, National Board Meeting, and the Fellowship Night happening on Day One. The event’s delegates, more than 100 of Mindanao’s most active architects, were given the entirety of Day Two to enjoy the best that Pearl Farm Resort had to offer.

The UAP Davao Chapter headed the Programs and Planning Committee. The sub-committees were headed by the following:

William C. Yong - Conference DirectorAgatha Ellen S. Valencia - Deputy Conference DirectorFrancis Gerard SJ. Hidalgo - Conference SecretaryMichael Jed F. The 36th UAP National Convention was held at the SMX Convention Center on April 22-24, 2010. With its theme UAP at the Forefront of Green Building and Sustainability, the convention focused on promoting more sustainable building practices manifested by the seminars conducted during the event. This year, UAP Davao Chapter stood up again to the challenge when they were given the task of representing the whole of Mindanao Area for the Fellowship Night by rendering a cultural performance showcasing the colorful and festive Moro dances. The more or less one month of practice paid off when the Mindanao Area performance was declared as the winning presentation from among the four groups – a great reward for the tiring and “sleepless” nights for those who performed. Next year, Mindanao Area would definitely defend the perpetual trophy with UAP Davao Chapter at the forefront of outstanding performances.

UAP Davao Chapter Holds Third DEFINING SPACES Design Exhibit

Defining Spaces, UAP Davao’s annual design exhibit, had its third incarnation on April 9-11, 2010. Dubbed “Defining Spaces 3,” the three-day event was held at the SM City Davao Entertainment Plaza.

More than 50 companies participated in Defining Spaces 3, showcasing their products and services, giving technical presentations, and simply being part of the celebrations. Many of the UAP Davao Chapter members were also present throughout the event, led by the DS-3 Chairperson, Past President Noel “Bong” Chavez.

Other “Defining Spaces” mainstays included Archs. Tee Jay Garcia and Aiken dela Cruz on Physical Arrangement, Arch. Agatha Ellen Valencia on Ways and Means, and Archs. Claudia Fernandez and Victoria Barquin on Programs and Planning.

Defining Spaces 3 was another successful event, and the lessons learned by the UAP Davao Chapter before, during, and after DS-3 will undoubtedly produce bigger, better, more enjoyable design exhibits in the coming years. (Mike Madrazo)

Last July 1-3, the Philippine Constructors Association (PCA) invited the UAP Davao Chapter to participate in its regional

construction expo, PhilConstruct Mindanao 2010.

The PCA provided a booth for the UAP Davao Chapter, which was manned by UAP Davao mainstays Tee Jay Ian Garcia, Felmar Lao, Francis Gerard Hidalgo, and Michael Madrazo. Throughout the three-day event, the chapter provided free architectural consultations, short lectures about Republic Act 9266, and warm fellowship to clients, contractors, and suppliers alike.

Overall, it was good exposure for the chapter, the organization, and the profession as a whole. It is likely that the annual PhilConstruct Mindanao expos will be a part of the UAP Davao’s calendar from now on.

On January this year, then-City Vice-Mayor Sara Z. Duterte graced our General Membership Meeting to ask the UAP Davao Chapter’s help. The crumbling Rizal Park Stage needed to be redesigned into a more notable Davao City landmark. And naturally, the chapter was quick to accept the challenge.

The Rizal Park Stage Design Competition then be-came a part of the Defining Spaces 3 program. En-tries from Archs. Francis Hidalgo, Bryan Bustillo, Isidoro Malaque, Aiken dela Cruz, and Ryan Song-cayauon were fielded as the best choices.

We expect construction of the new Rizal Park stage to begin as soon as our new Mayor settles down to work. (Mike Madrazo)

Architect Jean Marie Villamor Juanga:Of Covers and SubstancesBy Dean Maria Araceli Dans Lee

During the first week of June 2010, Jean approached me stealthily and with quite excruciating spasms of pretended shyness, and asked if I could do her write-up for the UAP magazine. Funny and opposing thoughts of Jean momentarily swept through my mind. I grinned and replied, why not get a professional writer?

Trying to restrain my laughter, I in fact warned her that I might write a story for children instead. But Jean persisted that I be the one to write it, adding that the deadline for the write-up was about a month away still, implying that I had all the time in world to do it – as if that would make any difference. But given her persistence, I ended up without much choice. That is Jean Marie Villamor Juanga for you! Her cover is merely that - a cover. She is undoubtedly all-woman, modeled after her mother who was a social worker and the only other woman in her family. Although slim and slender, Jean has always been in a perpetual battle with her weight like most women her age. I am not certain whether or not she has ever won the battle, but it is a pretty consistent one. Once in a while though, she painstakingly prettifies herself with feminine clothes and accessories. Other times, she walks down the corridor of UP, forgetting to button up her blouse. Don’t judge a book by its cover, they say. True, it is Jean’s substance that counts. A cautious, agonizingly deliberate, and unrelenting individual, Jean will not take “no” for an answer, if she can get away with it. Growing up in Davao City in a home of six men and only one woman – her five brothers, her late father, the writer Cesar Villamor, and her mother – must have bred the survivor side of Jean, inspiring her more dominant persona to surface! A take-charge person, Jean demands, and expects the job to be done as quickly as she had demanded. She takes her tasks seriously, and expects others to take theirs no less. “I do my part; you do yours” is Jean’s no-monkey-business motto. I suspect that this unmistakable trait of Jean had its trails even way before she graduated from Davao City High School. As a teenager, Jean up and left the comforts of Davao City, and plunged into the turmoil of college life in UP Diliman. As she armed herself with two – take note, not one but two – degrees in BS Interior Design and BS Architecture, Jean apparently was aware of the vital partnership between interiors and exteriors, of covers and substances, at such a young age. Subsequently, as Project Manager, she experimented with her budding notions of covers and substances in the architectural firm of Roger G. Villarosa in Ortigas, which handled as many as 50 high-rise building designs in Makati, including Tektite Towers, in the 1990’s. By the time she moved back to Davao in 1997, Jean had married Archt. Anthony Niven C. Juanga – a bonding that produced three children: Gianina, Giuliano and Giulio Carlito. She temporarily suspended her career in interiors and exteriors

in exchange for full-time motherhood, attesting to her intense focus on being the best in whatever task is put upon her. Seven years under their mother’s watchful eyes, Jean’s children have grown into obedient, well-mannered and industrious children. By 2004, Jean was able to partially embark once again into a career – this time as a part-time faculty member of the Architecture Program of UP Mindanao. Two years later, she inevitably became a full-time faculty member, and was appointed Program Coordinator in 2007. Since then, probably because of her regular bouts with insomnia, Jean needs to work till she drops dead. And by work, Jean means WORK, 24/7! With Mother Teresa as her favorite actress in a reality show, work actually means giving herself more than 100% to the task at hand! She swims with vigor and earnestness in everything she does. Jean is however as relentlessly intent in balancing work and play. With her two eldest children, Gianina and Giuliano, now in UP Diliman, and her youngest Giulio in Ateneo de Davao Grade School, Jean has had to find an alternative outlet for her maternal love: cats! And when she is sick and tired with her pet cat, Jean seeks refuge in HBO movies. By Friday evening, after work, cats and HBO, Jean then quite amusingly rewards herself with a bottle or two of wine, or a couple of shots of rum or gin. Jean’s love and passion for work is balanced with her equal love and passion for such beverages. Ask any faculty member of UP Mindanao, and they will attest to this truth. For Jean, the first half of year 2010 has been one of the most taxing: Jean was elected President of UAP Davao Chapter; Jean applied for and was awarded tenure at UP Mindanao; and Jean was elected Chair of the Department of Humanities of UP Mindanao. While all these attest to her achievements, Jean had to pass through the eye of a needle to earn these rewards. She did, with sheer determination, professionalism and a little bit of grace. Holding two important positions as UAP President and Chair of the Department of Humanities though does not intimidate Jean. In fact, nothing seems to daunt this woman. With a calculating and analytical mind, she is able to take the bull by its horns and arrive at the bottom line. Only those close to her know how much she talks to herself – moaning, whimpering and whining about the inefficiency of the worlds around her. Yes, Jean demands a great deal of herself – both in service and professionalism. And in the same tenor, she expects no less from those with whom she works. Don’t let the womanhood fool you; beneath that cover of softness and warm laughter is a unique woman of inimitable substance.

“She swims with vigor and earnestness in everything she

does.”

“I do my part; you do yours.”
