Rockbrook United Methodist Church
NEWS FROM THE ROCK...
On May 19th I was pleased to be part of the celebration at the Tri-Faith
Commons, for the dedication of “Abraham’s Bridge,” which crosses Hell
Creek, uniting the buildings of the Tri-Faith community; the groundbreaking
for the Tri-Faith Center building; and the “official” open house for the new
Countryside Community Church.
There is also a United Methodist presence on the Commons, as the planting
of the community garden and orchards were done through the BIG Garden
Project, and our friend Nathan Morgan.
I had a chance to chat with old friends and make new ones. I reconnected
with my old friend Wendy Goldberg, who is now the Interim Director of the
Tri-Faith Initiative. I spoke with Rev. Eric Elnes, Lead Pastor at Country-
side Church, whose books I have read but whom I had never had a chance to
meet before. I met The Most Reverend Joe Goodwin Burnett, former
Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Nebraska; we talked about the progress
being made toward the Episcopal and United Methodist Churches joining in
full communion. I talked with a woman whose daughter was among those
who took shelter in the basement of Temple Israel during the tornado of
1975, as her mother and family prayed for her while they took shelter under
a desk in the basement of their home. I met so many people from so many
faith traditions sharing their good news. It was truly a blessing to be there
on that day.
It was a reminder of Jesus’ command to love one another! We are all
different. We don’t agree on everything. But when we come together in
love, and celebrate all that we have in common, the result is blessed and
joyous!
Have a blessed and joyous summer!

News From the Rock . . .
They’re NOT going to call!
They may ask you if it’s okay to call, but
they’re not going to call.
Even if they ask you if you would like
them to call, they’re not going to call… Because of privacy laws and cutbacks, hospitals and other health care givers do not call churches any
more. Unfortunately, this has led to many people becoming angry at their churches and pastors for
not coming to make a visit.
Although this has been true for more than 15 years, most of us still are not used to it. And, to make
matters worse, hospitals have not changed the questions that they ask when someone checks in, mak-
ing it sound as if they will call your church. They’re not going to call.
Please call the church or the pastor if you are hospitalized, would like a visit, or would simply like
prayers. Also please let your families know that you would like them to call the church if you are
not able to do so. Thank you!

Episcopal and United Methodist churches
take step toward full communion
The Episcopal Church – United Methodist Dialogue Committee has agreed to send a
resolution for full communion to be considered by the Council of Bishops and for possible
consideration by the 2020 General Conference of The United Methodist Church.
The members of the committee made the decision during their meeting April 29-30 at
First United Methodist Church in Austin, Texas.
“We acknowledge that the decisions of the 2019 Special Session of the United Methodist
General Conference have deepened divisions within The UMC and introduced sharp and as
yet unanswered questions about the prospects for full communion between our churches,” the
members said in a statement released today. “And yet, we believe that what we are
experiencing in the various crises of our denominational life is the birth pangs of something
remarkable, something new. We believe that the forces of polarization, mistrust, and
animosity in our society and in our ecclesial life will not have the last word.”

Youth Mission Trip to Benton Harbor, Michigan!
From the Church Council…
John Wesley called prayer “the grand means of drawing near to God.” He diligently spent at
least two hours every day in fervent prayer and called upon us to “pray unceasingly.” Prayer
can help us turn our fears, anxiety, challenges and burdens into faith which can heal us. This
healing faith can transform us personally and collectively.
As we face personal challenges and the upheaval in our denomination, prayer must continue
to be a focus in our spiritual growth and care for one another. Prayers for our congregation are
uplifted by our Rockbrook prayer ministry. While small in number they, too, fervently follow the
lead of Mr. Wesley.
Prayer cards (available in all pews and attendance books) can be filled out for prayer by
Pastor Jim and the prayer ministry. Pastor Jim prays over all cards received and those cards
not marked as “pastor only” are shared with the prayer ministry. Prayer requests can be given
to the ushers during the service or dropped in the “prayer box” in the narthex.
All prayer requests are kept in the strictest confidence whether shared only with Pastor Jim or
with Pastor and the prayer ministry.
Let us take comfort in the words of Philippians 4:6-7: “Do not worry about anything, but in
everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to
God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and
your minds in Christ Jesus.”
You are invited to join the prayer ministry as they gather on the second and fourth Thursday
evenings at 6:30 PM in the Friendship Room.
With blessings and thanks,
Mark
Mark Heinz, Church Council Chairman
