UB reigns supreme in accounting competition The UB participants with UB-SBAA Dean Dr. Kareen B. Leon (2 nd from right, standing); UB-JPIA adviser Xernan Caramto (2 nd from left, standing); and Mr. John Balanquit, adviser of the Junior Philippine Institute of Accountants Region 1 and CAR (extreme left, standing) Proving their genius in accountancy, the University of Baguio (UB) School of Business Administration and Accountancy garnered the coveted Merit Award for Academic Excellence granted by the National Federation of Junior Philippine Institute of Accountants (NFJPIA) - Region 1 and Cordillera Administrative Region during the NFJPIA Regional Mid-year Convention. The Junior Philippine Institute of Accountants (JPIA)-UB Chapter was also hailed as the Most Awarded Local Chapter in Both Academics and Non-academics during the convention held at the Hotel Supreme on Sept. 22-24. The event also included competitions participated in by 30 colleges and universities from Region 1 and CAR. UB’s Jenya Dan Valdez set the triumphant mood for UB after landing in the first place in the Northern CPA Review (NCPAR) Cup’sMeet the Standards competition, which covered the topic on Philippine financial reporting and accounting standards. Valdez received a grant from NCPAR. Meanwhile, finishing at the first place, Charmaine Joy de Leon aced all the other participants in the Pricewaterhouse Coopers Cup that focused on Philippine income taxation. In addition, Ariane Mat-an seized the second spot in the Sycip, Gorres, Velayo and Co. (SGV) Cup which tackled topics usually included in the Certified Public Accountant board examination. Claudine Nicole Valenzuela, on the other hand, settled in the second spot in the Klynveld Peat Marwick Goerdeler (KPMG) Cup’s Basic Accounting Wizard. Valenzuela also landed in the third place in the essay writing competition. Furthermore, Stephanie Solomon secured the third place in the Deloitte Cup which focused on auditing theory and problems, also placing third in the Cyber Accounting Genius competition which revolved around the basics of accounting. Finally, Dayanara Villanueva was crowned Ms. Ambassador of Goodwill, snatching the Best in Casual Wear and Best in Casual Interview awards. She also won the second place in the extemporaneous speaking contest. Valdez, de Leon, Mat-an and Villanueva were chosen to represent Region 1 and CAR in the national mid-year convention in Puerto Prinsesa, Palawan on Oct. 22-25. Xernan Caramto, adviser of JPIA-UB Chapter, served as the coach.
