THe TaLeSOF HOFFMan(les contes d’hoffman)

jacques offenbach (1819–1880) // Sung in French

November 7, 8, 9 // 7:30pm | November 10 // 2:00 pmOld Auditorium

If ever a man was unlucky at love, it’s Hoffmann, the wild-eyed poet who travels the world in search of the ideal woman and ends up thwarted by villains at every turn.

First, he’s smitten by Olympia – but discovers she’s nothing more than a mechanical doll. Then he’s seduced by Giulietta – but the treacherous courtesan casts him aside. Finally, he falls for Antonia, a fragile songstress who will die if she sings – and regrettably for him, she does both!

Impossibly beautiful music (including the famous Barcarolle) combined with flamboyant theatricality – that’s why Offenbach’s extravaganza is the perfect way to chase away winter’s woes.

nino rota (1911–1979) // Sung in Italian

February 6, 7, 8 // 7:30pm | February 9 // 2:00 pmChan Centre for the Performing Arts

The Florentine Straw Hat is an exhilarating comedy based on the famous nineteenth century French farce which inspired René Clair’s classic silent film An Italian Straw Hat. Nino Rota – who was also a celebrated composer of film music, including The Godfather and many films directed by Fellini – co-wrote the libretto for Il Cappello di paglia di Firenze and composed the music in 1945. His witty and brilliant satire on the petty conventions of respectable society is presented in music in the tradition of Rossini, Puccini and Verdi.

The farcical story concerns a bridegroom’s quest to replace a straw hat eaten by his horse. Unfortunately, the hat belonged to a married lady who was dallying with her lover, and she fears discovery if she returns home hatless. An unpromising start to a wedding day!

David Agler | Conductor Nancy Hermiston | Director

THe CUnnIngLITTLe vIxen(PŘÍhodY lIŠkY bYstRouŠkY)

LeoŠ janÁČeK (1854–1928) // Sung in Czech

JUNE 26, 27, 28 // 7:30 pm | JUNE 29 // 2:00 pmOld Auditorium

When Janáček discovered Těsnohlídek’s comic-strip-inspired story and decided to turn it into an opera, he began work by meeting with the author and beginning a study of animals. With this understanding of the characters involved, his own 70 years of life experience, and an undying, unrequited love for the much younger, married Kamila Stösslová, he began work on the opera. Writing his own libretto, he transformed himself into the forester, and Kamila into the vixen and Terynka. He also transformed the originally comedic cartoon into a philosophical reflection on the cycle of life and death. As with other operas by older composers, this late opera shows a deep understanding of life leading to a return to simplicity.

Usually seen as a fairytale, this piece also provides us with a revealing insight into nature’s struggle to survive the devastation of the footprint of humanity.

Norbert Baxa | Conductor Nancy Hermiston | Director
