What has God commanded us to do which applies to giving care in the Extended Session?

Believers who love the Father love those who have been born of Him.

We show love to the children of God when we love God and obey His commandments.

Vision and Passion of Extended Session Care

• To provide safe, loving, and spiritual care for the children of members serving in other areas and visitors attending worship service only.

• To provide an atmosphere of joy for both children and caregivers and to strengthen you in your own walk with the LORD.

• To be good financial stewards through volunteer service vs. paid workers.

“Love God with all” = in everything we do

“diligently” = intentionally

“your children” = all children

“when you” = in all settings of life (home, church, work, school, marketplace, neighborhood, recreation, etc.)

These things I command....

Christ-followers apply care to our little ones at church with a unique heart, soul, mind, and strength towards God.

It is not burdensome because our strength comes from a loving God as a result of our desire to obey all that He has commanded us to do and especially in the care for the next generations.

He spreads the fragrance of the knowledge of Him as you give His unique care to our little ones.

To the young families of UBC and to God, you are the aroma of Christ among those who are being saved as you lovingly care for their child.

Our UBC Extended Session care is more than just babysitting.

Let’s look at how we apply this unique care giving in practical ways and in obedience to God’s commands.

Leave your ABF class at

10:10a

Arrive (10:15a)

This is the time when you arrive to relieve the Sunday school teachers and get prepared to take over the care of the little ones during Extended Session for the worship service.

It is VERY important to leave your ABF class in time to ARRIVE at 10:15 a.m. This is a short ten-minute transition so being on-time is critical to stress-free care.

Check-in

Immediately check in with the Coordinator.

Get your room assignment.

Proceed quickly to get your smock and foot covers (for baby rooms) and/or quickly get to your assigned care room.

Why smocks and foot covers?

Smocks are for protecting your clothing and for protecting the children from any transference of germs that might be on your clothing.

Foot covers are used in the Newborn, Crawlers and Walkers care rooms. These keep the germs and outside dirt to a minimum of transference for these babies who are on the floor a lot. These can be worn over your shoes or on sock/bare feet.

Put both items in dirty clothes hamper after use.

Move quickly to classroom for transition

It is tempting to visit and fellowship for a few minutes with other caregivers but once you get your smock and foot covers, please proceed quickly to your assigned care room.

The Sunday school teachers will go through the Infant Care Reports with you so you will know each individual child’s needs for Extended Session.

Look at care report. Here’s the instructions for checking the box when the child’s physical needs have been met.

Child’s Name, Parent Name, Beeper# or Cell#

Parents will write out specific instructions here.

Check the boxes and add the time when these instructions have been completed during your care.

Also jot a note to parents about anything of interest that happened during their care giving... Sarah laughed a lot, Henry pulled up, Dee said “mama”, we sang a song, prayed for Jen, Will said something cute….

What a great way to let young parents know that you had some wonderful interaction with their child.

Only 10 minutes!

Now you see why this ten-minute transition time is tight so your faithfulness to being on time from your ABF class is greatly appreciated!

As the teachers transfer care instructions they can introduce each child to you. Each child will have a name label on their back. Greet each child with a smile and sweet hello! Tell them that you are so happy to see them today! You will receive many smiles!

How to check in visitors

First impressions are everything in the church nursery setting. New and visiting families who are only attending the worship service need special attention since Sunday school teachers and Extended Session caregivers both are not familiar with these children or their needs at all.

Transfer of care and checking in

visitorsProcedure: One Sunday school teacher transfers information over to the Extended Session caregivers while the other teacher stays at the door and receives the child. This works well because they are familiar with the check-in and security tag process. If a visitor arrives after the Sunday school teachers have departed then the Extended Session Coordinator will assist with check-in . You will need to greet visitors, take the child and put their personal items in a crib. The coordinator will go over the Infant Care Report for the visiting child with you after the parents leave.

Care Time (10:30a-11:35a)

Priority care during this time is taking care of each child’s needs as indicated on the Infant Care Report. A lot of these needs have been taken care of during the first hour but diapering always needs additional check during the Extended Session care time.

Care Time (11:35a-11:55a)

Bottle feeding, diaper changing, and napping schedules need to be followed very well in the Newborn and Crawler care rooms. This is the segment of care time that we concentrate on getting diapers changed before parents arrive.

Be aware that Walkers, Toddlers and Two’s will be tired towards the end of the Extended Session care time so you may want to do some less active things with those children towards the end such as reading a book to them, playing a group game, doing a table activity with all of them. Ask the coordinator for ideas if needed.

Introducing new “church” diaper bags

In the near future, each family who regularly attends UBC will be offered a “church” diaper bag. This is a small bag which should contain ONLY the essential items needed to care for their child’s specific needs such as diapers, bottle, pacifier, snugglies) These items should always be labeled. All bibs, burp cloths, crib blankets, and toys are provided by UBC. Parents will receive a “parent packet” which contains information about providing the essential items only in this small bag instead of leaving big diaper bags that prevent caregivers from getting to the essential items quickly.

The JOY of diapering!

This care time for each infant and toddler can actually be joy-filled! How you say?

While you have them captive on the changing table you can give them individual face time. You are close enough while changing the diaper to smile, coo, laugh, sing, say a blessing, say a prayer, recite a scripture, or recite the truth statements. Printed cards with these items are at each changing station to assist you.

Diapering Policy

Our policy is that females only provide the diapering care. If your care room needs additional help in changing diapers, please let the coordinator know and that will be provided.

Instructions are posted above each changing station. Please follow these carefully. Once you have changed a diaper, put the child in the crib, sanitize the changing station and immediately wash your hands before caring for the children again.

Gloves are provided for YOUR protection.

Remove soiled diaper.

Always stand up against the table to protect the child from rolling off.

TIP: Hold the soiled diaper in one hand and use the other hand to roll the glove over it, encasing it inside the glove. This keeps the soiled and smelly diapers encased in the glove. Set aside.

Wipe down changing station with blue spray in bottle.

Wash hands again before the diapering the next child and because blue spray is an irritant to skin.

Before moving on to the next child, immediately mark the Infant Care Report with the time of the diaper change you just completed. Mark it with a W for wet only or WBM for wet and dirty. There are a few steps in diapering but this is a very efficient process really and keeps babies and care givers safe.

Bottle Feeding

Newborn and Crawler care rooms do require some bottle feedings during the Extended Session time.

Walkers, Toddlers, and Two’s are given water and snack at the end of Sunday school so they are not given a snack during Extended Session care.

Bottle Feeding tips

The parent packet provided with the “church” diaper bags will direct parents to have the bottles prepared and ready to serve. This means that some may be in a thermal bag to keep warm. If you receive a bottle that has not been prepared, please give it to the coordinator to prepare and warm up so that you do not have to leave the care room to prepare a bottle.

This is wonderful “face-time” with a child.

Sing, laugh, pray over them, say a blessing over them, just talk to them and tell them that Jesus loves them and so do you!

Please ask the coordinator to rinse the bottle before returning it to the diaper bag.

Mark the Infant Care Report immediately with the time of the feeding and note how much of the bottle was consumed.

Napping Schedules

Napping schedules are probably the most difficult to maintain in the church nursery setting but it can be done! Note which children need to nap during your care time.

If they need a bottle before nap, make a note to feed them first. 10-15 minutes early or late is not as critical as simply keeping close to their schedules. A quick organization of nap times is key to a calmer care room. Seek the coordinator’s assistance in this.

BEFORE PARENTS ARRIVE

Make sure each child’s diaper has been changed within the last hour. No parent wants to pick up a child with a wet or dirty diaper for the ride home.

All of UBC’s bibs, burp cloths, crib blankets, and toys left in the care room go either in dirty clothes hamper or toy sink to be washed.

Pick-up Time

Greet each returning parent with a smile and a positive attitude! Never grumble or complain to a parent. If you don’t have anything positive to say then simply let them know what an honor, privilege, or joy it was to care for their child that morning! Remember you are the “fragrance” of Christ to them! Love them!

5 Steps

4. GIVE child to parent along with ALL of their belongings.

5. TELL them you look forward to seeing them again soon!

Parent Pick Up Time

This time must be as efficient as possible. We have asked that ONE parent only come to the care room door to pick up their child. We have asked that the other parent and siblings remain in the OUTER foyer to relieve congestion. Try not visit with parents during this time. If they have questions show them Infant Care Report and try to answer quickly. If they still have questions, step out and let the other caregiver continue checking out other children.

Closing the Care Room

Check room for any additional items or toys that need to go in the hampers or sink for cleaning.

Remove smocks and foot covers and put in the dirty clothes hampers.

Gather your own personal items (many are left behind.)
