Application Keys
• Application can be found on admissions.universityofcalifornia.edu• Create an Account, be sure to write down information• Enter Social Security Number, if student does not have one can use
DACA number or leave box blank• Choose your campuses and majors. Some majors may be closed to
freshmen. • Specific programs may ask for supplemental or additional
information, this will appear in an orange box below the major if applicable.
• For Scholarships, review and select up to 16 scholarships that match your characteristics, interests, and background!
• Application will ask students to enter household size and family income, which will provide context to the community environment and be used when determining fee waiver eligibility.
Academic History• Advanced math and language other than English courses in middle school can
be used to meet A-G requirements, so be sure to enter this information if applicable.
• VHS code is 052480• Enter academic courses taken and grades earned at each school EXACTLY
as they appear on your transcript.• Application will not allow +/- to be entered on grades as they want the whole
grade only. • For senior year courses, students will mark IP (In Progress) for Fall classes
and PL (Planned) for Spring classes.• If students took courses at a college while in high school they will need to list
these courses after entering and reviewing their high school academic history. • GPA will be calculated using the summer before 10th grade through the
summer after 11th grade A-G course grades. A maximum of 8 honors points can be given for UC approved honors courses.
• Additional Comments section can be used to explain unusual circumstances, it should not be used as an extension of Personal Insight Questions.
Activities & AwardsIn this section, you must present everything of value from the student’s resume. You want this section to “look” visually full and robust in order to present an active student. Students are given 5 spots in each of the 6 sections.

Test Scores
• Students must take the SAT with Essay or ACT with Writing.
• On the application students will Self-report all test scores.
• SAT/ ACT test scores will need to be sent to UCs through collegeboard.org (SAT) or ACT.org (ACT) at time of application. Scores can be submitted to just one campus and then will be shared with all other UC schools students have applied to.
• UCs do not superscore, but take best single sitting• SAT/ ACT testing must be completed by December of
student’s senior year.• AP/ IB scores will be self reported and scores will need
to be sent once accepted into a UC.
The personal insight questions
• Freshmen must choose 4 out of 8 questions.• Maximum of 350 words for each response.• All questions have equal value; there is no advantage or
disadvantage to choosing certain questions over others.• Students can use this area to express who they are and
what matters to them.• Students have the option over which questions to
answer which gives students flexibility and control over what they wish to express.
• With this format, students can select questions that are most relevant to them.
• It is important to be sure you are focusing on yourself and your achievements when answering the prompts.
Personal Insight Questions
The Personal Insight Questions 1. Describe an example of your leadership experience in which you have positively influenced others, helped resolve disputes, or contributed to group efforts over time. 2. Every person has a creative side, and it can be expressed in many ways: problem solving, original and innovative thinking, and artistically, to name a few. Describe how you express your creative side.
3. What would you say is your greatest talent or skill? How have you developed and demonstrated that talent over time?
4. Describe how you have taken advantage of a significant educational opportunity or worked to overcome an educational barrier you have faced.
5. Describe the most significant challenge you have faced and the steps you have taken to overcome this challenge. How has this challenge affected your academic achievement?
6. Think about an academic subject that inspires you. Describe how you have furthered this interest inside and/or outside of the classroom.
7. What have you done to make your school or your community a better place?
8. Beyond what has already been shared in your application, what do you believe makes you stand out as a strong candidate for admissions to the University of California?
Submitting the Application
Fees, Payment & Waivers
• Application is $70 per campus.• Fee waiver can be applied for within the
application and is based on household size and family income.
• Students will be notified immediately within the application if they have qualified for a fee waiver.
• Waiver is good for up to 4 campuses.
Reminder!• Review and proof: It is very important to
have your parents and academic counselor review your application. Read all directions carefully, answer all questions completely. You only get one chance at a first impression. Adult eyes!
• You will be more competitive if you pick a major. Send message: “I know why I want to attend this university.”
• Accuracy with the Academic History section- you must meet all admissions requirements. Include 7/8 grade math and world language. Do not include PE. Health, ASCP or other non- A-G courses. Have your counselor review.
• Do not miss any deadlines, check your email weekly. Application deadline is 11/30/2017.
• Use your resume/ brag sheet to present the entire scope of your academic honors, service and leadership experiences. Do not leave anything of value out of your presentation.
• Prepare your Personal Insight Questions outside the application as Word documents- do not compose your essay on the application, you will be timed out and lose work. Polish and proof it. Personal Insight Questions must be the student’s own voice- try speaking it/ reading it aloud. Does it sound like you?
• Apply to a safety school- CSUF, CPP, UCR, etc. Cover all your bases.
• Check your email on a regular basis!
