I explore the story of Susanna Cox through a multi-faceted prism of the turbulent times when America comes into its own and attempts to understand, explain and exonerate itself as a new-born nation with new ideals, new geography, new literature, new ethics, and new heroes. Susanna’s hanging creates a vortex, whose power draws in every character and makes them confront their dreams of a future and freedom in their brave new world. It is the play about breaking taboos and crossing frontiers, whether sexual, social, or spiritual. There were some small but vital adjustments that I wanted to make to the script following the premiere production at Signature Theatre last year, and I am very grateful to Irina Brown and the students and faculty of UC Davis for providing me with the space and the acting talent to continue to develop my work.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUNDThe United States Declaration of Independence was adopted on July 4, 1776, which declared that the Thirteen Colonies in North America were "Free and Independent States.”

"… our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal." Abraham Lincoln, Gettysburg Address, 1863.

Thomas Jefferson (April 13, 1743 – July 4, 1826) was the third President of the United States (1801–1809), the principal author of the Declaration of Independence (1776), and one of the most influential Founding Fathers for his promotion of the ideals of republicanism in the United States. Major events during his presidency include the Louisiana Purchase (1803) and the Lewis and Clark Expedition (1804–1806).

Meriwether Lewis (August 18, 1774–October 11, 1809) was an American explorer, soldier, and public administrator, best known for his role as the leader of the Lewis and Clark Expedition also known as the Corps of Discovery, with William Clark, whose mission was to explore the territory of the Louisiana Purchase.

The Lewis and Clark Expedition (1804-1806) was the first American overland expedition to the Pacific Coast and back.

Daniel Boone (November 2 [O.S. October 22] 1734 – September 26, 1820) was an American pioneer and hunter whose frontier exploits made him one of the first folk heroes of the United States. Boone is most famous for his exploration and settlement of what is now the U.S. state of Kentucky, which was then beyond the western borders of the Thirteen Colonies. In 1784 John Filson published Daniel Boone's "Adventures" on Boone's 50th birthday. The narrative describes in Boone's own words his exploits in the Kentucky wilderness from May 1769 to October 1782. His adventures—real and legendary—were influential in creating the archetypal Western hero of American folklore.

The Mennonites are a group of Christian Anabaptist denominations named after Menno Simons (1496-1561). It is one of the historic peace churches.

Susanna Cox was born in 1785, one of many children to a very poor family in the Oley Valley. An illiterate girl, described by many as a friendly, kind, simpleton, she was “bound out” to a neighboring family for her room and board. On the morning of June 10, 1809 before a mournful crowd of over 20,000 Susanna was hanged for murdering her new-born child.

THOMAS J. MUNN (Lighting Designer) is a UC Davis Department of Theatre and Dance faculty member. His UC Davis credits include Big Love; Rocky Horror Show, Carmen and Urinetown. He served as Lighting Director/Designer for the San Francisco Opera 1976-2001. For that company alone, he designed in excess of 200 productions. He has designed lighting and scenery for Broadway, Off Broadway, Regional Theater, Ballet, Dance, Industrials and Television (Emmy Award). Recent productions include Julius Caesar for the Pioneer Theatre Company in Salt Lake City; Samson and Delilah for San Diego Opera; the TV production of Mahagonny for LA Opera, Marriage of Figaro for Boston Lyric Opera and Rodelinda for Portland Opera. He continues to work as theatrical lighting consultant for various architectural projects.

JOSHUA NIELSEN (Daniel Boone) is participating in his first show at UC Davis and is delighted to be a part of Nest.

KRISTIN ORLANDO (Stage Manager)is a fifth year graduating senior at UC Davis completing degrees in Dramatic Art and Mathematics. For the past year she has worked as the season stage manager for the UC Davis Department of Music as well as stage manager and production stage manager at the UC Davis Department of Theatre & Dance. Past Theatre & Dance projects include: Dancing on the Edge (2006), Weight of Memory (2007), Man of La Mancha (2007), Collapse (2007), THIRDeYE Theatre Festival (2008), and ShadowLight (2008). Nest marks the end of Kristin’s career at UC Davis.

NANCY PIPKIN (Costume Designer)Most recently Nancy designed costumes for Fate & Spinoza. She has designed for over 100 productions in her 15 year career. Some favorite productions here in Northern California include: The Price (Aurora Theatre Company), rightnextto me and Book of Liz (B Street Theatre), Dirty Story and Memory of Water (Capital Stage), Art and Fossils (Sacramento Theatre Company), Diary of a '49er and Little Women (Foothill Theatre Company), and Imaginary Invalid and Gunfighter (River Stage). Nancy is a first-year MFA candidate here at UC Davis.

JERREL T. REECE (Joe) is a fifth year English and Dramatic Art major. He has been seen in several UC Davis productions, including Macbeth, Sanatorium Under the Sign of the Hourglass, and Nursery/School.

KRISTINA STASI (Chorus) is excited to be in her second show at UC Davis. She performed in last year’s marionette produc-tion of Man of La Mancha as a muleteer and as the left arm of the Housekeeper. As a junior Dramatic Arts major, she is looking forward to more shows before graduating.

IRINA BROWN (Director)is a joint Artistic Director of Natural Perspective TC (with Timberlake Wertenbaker). Artistic Director of the Tron Theatre, Glasgow 1996-1999. Recent work includes: Jenufa (Natural Perspective/ Arcola); new opera by Dominique Le Gendre Bird of Night (Royal Opera House, Covent Garden); Three Tall Women (Oxford Playhouse); Parents’ Evening by Bathsheba Doran (Cherry Lane Theatre, New York); The Vagina Monologues (London’s West End/ national tour); Further than the Furthest Thing (National Theatre); Andrei Tarkovsky’s Boris Godunov (ROH/ Mariinski/ L’Opera de Monte Carlo). Other credits: The Cosmonaut’s Last Message to the Woman He Once Loved in the Former Soviet Union (Tron, Glasgow); The Sound of Music (WYP); Our Country’s Good (Moscow). She is delighted to be back at UC Davis as the Granada Artist-in-Residence.

BATHSHEBA DORAN (Playwright)has written the plays Nest (Signature Theater), Living Room in Africa (off-Broadway, Edge Theater, published), 2 Soldiers (various, published), The Parents’ Evening (Cherry Lane, director Irina Brown), Until Morning (BBC Radio 4) and adaptations of Maeterlinck’s The Blind (Classic Stage Company), Peer Gynt (director Andre Serban) and Great Expectations (Off-Broadway with Kathleen Chalfant at the Lucille Lortel).

Doran was born in the UK and studied at Cambridge and then Oxford University. She moved permanently to the United States on a Fulbright Scholarship in 2000. She is the recipient of three Lecomte du Nouy Lincoln Center playwriting awards, and her work has been developed by MTC, NYTW, the O’Neill Playwrights Center, the McCarter Theatre, Lincoln Center and Sundance among others. She is a former playwriting fellow of Juilliard and received her M.F.A. from Columbia University. She has worked as a comedy writer for VH1 (Best Week Ever), BBC TV (including the award-winning Smack the Pony) and The Cambridge Footlights.

She is currently under commission from Atlantic Theater in New York and South Coast Repertory Theater in California.

BRETT DUGGAN (Mr. Drumble) holds a BFA from Emerson College in Boston. He has played scores of characters on stage from New York to San Francisco. He will be a UC Davis MFA candidate beginning next fall. Visit www.Brettduggan.com.

DANIEL GILES (Chorus) is a Dramatic Art major in his final year at UC Davis. Daniel has been acting for a number of years. His credits include The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Falsettos, Romeo and Juliet, West Side Story, and a myriad of other shows.

ELIO GUTIERREZ (Chorus) is a fourth year Psychology and Spanish double major at UC Davis. He was last seen as Pedro in Man of La Mancha, Department of Theatre & Dance, and will soon appear as Huck in the musical Tom Sawyer at Woodland Opera House.

DANIEL A. GUTTENBERG (Chaplain) is a graduate of the Los Angeles City College Theatre Academy and a first-year transfer student here at UC Davis, where he is majoring in Dramatic Art and English. This is his third production with UC Davis Department of Theatre & Dance. He previously appeared as Buffo in Nights at the Circus and directed Elise Kane's Ghost, Bathtub, Windmill. His passion for directing continues this summer with Acme Theatre Company’s production of Tom Stoppard's On the Razzle.

SAMUEL HARDIE (Jacob Geer) is a graduated Dramatic Art major having focused primarily on set design. He has designed six productions over the past three years for Main Stage Dance/Theatre Festival (2005-2007), The Island (2006), and THIRDeYE Theatre Festival (2007). His acting credits include Garry in Noises Off (2007), and Jack Walser in Nights at the Circus (2008).

DARYL HENLINE (Music Director/Sound Designer)has been writing music for Bay Area theatre projects for over 15 years. Recently he composed the score for Kim Epifano’s Epiphany Dance Theatre’s Lotta's Opera and Trolley Dances. Theatre credits include Julius Caesar at Somarts and Caucasian Chalk Circle for NCTC. Daryl is the Artistic Director of The Conspiracy of Beards, a San Francisco based 25 voice male choir singing original arrangements of Leonard Cohen. The popular choir will tour New York and Europe this spring. He received vocal performance training at Wayne State, Detroit, under acclaimed Harry Langsford. His experience as a solo vocalist ranges from traditional opera, oratorio to new music experimental ensembles. Credits include Lamplighters Music Theatre, City Summer Opera, Opera Grand Rapids, Opera Piccola and Front Range Improvisational Orchestra.

JESSICA HERMAN (Susanna Cox) is a third year Dramatic Art major. She has worked in the Theatre & Dance Costume Shop on productions including Noises Off and THIRDeYE Theatre Festival. Her acting credits include The Laramie Project, THIRDeYE Theatre Festival’s Baetylus, and other plays and scenes. Jessica is from Los Angeles and this summer is going to New York where she will be studying acting for film and television.

JOHN IACOVELLI (Scenic Designer) has been a member of the UC Davis faculty since 2000, and previously taught at UC Riverside for 10 years. He has designed over 300 productions at theatres across the nation and for productions in Spain, Poland, Mexico, and China. He has done extensive production design in TV, winning an Emmy in 2001 and he has worked on several films. He dedicates his work to the memory of Dr. Franciso Estrada Valle, a pioneering AIDS activist murdered in 1992.

HOPE MIRLIS (Elizabeth) is a native New Yorker, who spent the past 16 years in Atlanta, GA where she co-founded Synchronicity Performance Group. She is an active stage and commercial actress with credits including Scana Energy, Home Depot and Austin Snack Crackers. Favorite stage roles around Atlanta include Ruth in Anne Frank: Within and Without (Center of Puppetry Arts), Turtle/Bird in A Year with Frog & Toad (Synchronicity), Reggie Fluty in The Laramie Project (Actor's Express), and Mrs. Shin in Good Person of Szechwan (Theater Emory). Hope is a first year Acting MFA and teaches DRA 10.

CHRISTINA MOORE (Chorus)is a second year Dramatic Art major. She plans to study theatre abroad in London with such conservatories as RADA or LAMDA. Christina is pleased to be playing a male youth again. She received a Sacramento Lanea award for her portrayal of the mentally challenged boy, Buddy, in The Diviners. Other performances include Esperanza in Over the Line (UC Davis), Elizabeth Proctor in The Crucible, Helen in Baby with the Bath Water and Belinda in Noises Off! (Oakmont High). She has acted in numerous independent films in the Bay Area. She hopes to one day be part of the prestigious Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland.
