What is SOS & why do we need it?

• UCI program that meets Cal/OSHA’s Injury & Illness Prevention Program (IIPP) Standard

• Integrates Safety into our Workplace• Injury Minimization• Workers’ Compensation Cost Reduction• Creation of a Safety Culture

Work Units

• Lowest level work group of individuals that have similar training needs  

   • Includes people who work closely together

on a regular basis

• Examples: • PI and laboratory staff• Office manager and staff• Trades supervisor and staff

SOS Representative (SR)

• Appointed by a Supervisor or PI

• Coached by EH&S to implement SOS into their work unit

• Qualifications

• Familiar with the work units daily activities• Ability to communicate safety procedures to work

unit members• Ability to maintain culture of safety in the work unit

SOS Representative Responsibilities

1. Complete Hazard Identification Checklist

2. Ensure work unit members have taken the Safety Training Self-Assessment and completed EH&S required training in UC Learning Center

3. Complete work unit specific training

4. Communicate completion of steps and safety related activities to EH&S

• SR ensures work unit members log into UCLC and complete the Safety Training Self-Assessment and EH&S required training

• Questions evaluate job categories/activities• Responses determine required training• Supervisors/PI’s have access to transcripts

Work Unit Specific Training

• Beyond the standard EH&S course offerings• Address hazards and processes found only

in your work unit• Review Hazard Identification Checklist• Review SOP’s • Review other work unit specific activities

• SR ensures when new hazards arise and when employees change job duties they:• Retake self-assessment in UCLC• Enroll in additional required EH&S classes• Update Hazard Identification Checklist• Receive work unit specific training
