APAMSA Executive Board over this past year. Im tremendously proud of the work weve done, and am

marrow registration, the 2009 APAMSA National Conference, medical student education, professional
development and health fairs in various underserved communities. Our goals could not have been accomplished
without the tremendous support weve received from others, and we would like to express thanks to the UCLA
David Geffen School of Medicine Student Affairs Office and Medical Student Council, National APAMSA, APAMA,
our faculty mentors at UCLA, the 2008-2009 UCLA APAMSA Executive Board, the Los Angeles/OC Hepatitis B

APA HEALTH CARE HEALTH FAIRS
We conduct frequent health fairs in underserved communities throughout the Greater Los Angeles area. This
gives UCLA medical students, in conjunction withundergraduatesand community physicians, the opportunity to
provide glucose, cholesterol, hypertension, hepatitis B, and other screenings, along with basic counseling to
populations that frequently lack insurance and primary care physicians. We conducted 15 health fairs this year,
serving greater than 1400 clients. Health Fair Training, including a Needlestick Skills lab, was conducted for new
medical student volunteers on 10/12/09.

BONE MARROW REGISTRATION DRIVES
The lack of Asian-American and mixed race representation in the bone marrow registry means that patients with
leukemia and other life-threatening disorders that share our ethnic background are often unable to find
matches for bone marrow transplantation, usually their last or only hope for treatment. We established drives in
Spring and Fall 2009, and were able to add nearly 200 people to the registry. We also established education
programs on the need for bone marrow registration at the medical school and in the community. One unique
aspect this year was our partnerships with Asian-American businesses, the popular Kogi BBQ and Nom Nom
Truck food trucks, as a way to increase visibility to the issue.

students provided health screenings for diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, and other health metrics. This
event will provided an opportunity for UCLA medical students to become leaders and providers in bringing
needed health screenings to the underserved South Asian community. There are few UCLA health fair events
that target South Asian communities, yet lack of health care access is still prevalent in those communities. Thisand future events will provide medical students with a valuable educational opportunity in terms of performing
screening examinations, patient interaction, and cultural competency in the South Asian community.
