Traits of a Naval Officer“...It is by no means enough that an officer of the Navy should be a capable

mariner. He must be that, of course, but also a great deal more. He should be, as well, agentleman of liberal education, refined manner, punctilious courtesy and the nicest sense ofpersonal honor.

He should be the soul of tact, patience, justice, firmness, and charity. No merito-rious act of subordinate should escape his attention or left to pass without its reward, evenif the reward be only one word of approval. Conversely, he should not be blind to asingle fault in any subordinate, though at the same time he should be quick and unfailing todistinguish error from malice, thoughtlessness from incompetency, and well-meant short-coming from heedless or stupid blunder. As he should be universal and impartial in hisrewards and approval of merit, so should he be judicial and unbending in his punishmentor reproof of misconduct.”

-John Paul Jones, spoken before the Maritime Commission of 1775

MY FIRST DAY

“1) Am I supposed to be a part of this group (mean-ing the 4th Class)?2) Cuadrado, who is this guy Verde (AKA Mr.Green)?3) Hold me, Cuadrado, because if this guy Verdesays one more thing to me I will break his neck(lucky for him that day was the end of O-Week).”--SSgt Daviu

“My first day of ROTC was actually during mysecond year, which might be a surprise to a fewpeople. When I joined, it was a month into thequarter and everyone seemed to know all the go-abouts of the unit. They threw me into the wholerotation of things and I had no idea how to drill, when to salute, etc. I basically made very mistakeyou could think of that first day.”--MIDN 3/CEclevia

“When I first met the ROTC O-Week staff mem-bers, I felt like I was a freshman in high schoolagain; everyone seemed so big and intimidating.Soon we were issued our uniforms and I wasshocked at my new Navy appearance. We allwondered what we were getting ourselves into thatfirst day, and looking back, I think it’s easy for thefourth class to laugh at how scared we all were.”--MIDN 4/C Bernier

“I thought O-Week was very interesting. Itwas very funny to watch the freshmen gothrough a very light taste of bootcamp. Forme, all the experiences were just alot of fun.”--Sgt Rakin

“I was pretty excited about my first day ofROTC, but I was also nervous and did notknow what to expect. I have wanted to be inthe Marine Corps for many years so I was justglad to be here and was undoubtedly ready foranything.”--MIDN 4/C Nickols

“My first instinct was to stay the heck away fromthat Gunny fellow.”--MIDN 2/C Hong

“The second I stepped off the bus for my INDOCtraining, the barrage of screaming, being humiliated,PTing, 0430 mornings, throwing up, and getting injuredconsumed my days. “This cannot be what real militarylife is like,” I repeadedly thought during my stay at thebase; “No one can live like this!” When it was over, the feeling of accomplishment, a true understanding ofmotivation, and the knowledge that life in ROTCwould not be like this, gave me a sense of belongingand I knew that becoming a part of the military wouldbe the best decision I had ever made.”--MIDN 1/CDutkiewicz

“I walked to ROTC with MIDN-retiredBell, because we were the only peoplethat lived on Hilgard. Once we got to theclassroom, I remember hardly seeing anyfemales, Mr. Mendoza had on shorts, Mr.Stender kept looking to the back of theclassroom, and a couple of the guys hadreally big hair, which was gone within thehour.”--MIDN 1/C Morgan
