50 Years Of Recreation: It’s The Dawn Of A New Era

Traditional recreation programs were first formally introduced to UCSB students in 1964, and now in 2014 UCSB has been named as one of the 25 healthiest colleges in the U.S. From a humble beginning Recreation has grown into one of the largest campus departments providing over 680 student employment opportunities and enrolling over 18,000 students in various programs each year. The award winning Recreation Center which opened in 1995 welcomes over 800,000 students, staff, faculty, and local community members annually. It is also the only University Recreation Center in the U.S. to be awarded LEED EB Silver and Gold for sustainability by the US Green Building Council.

Additionally, the Rec Cen serves as a showcase facility for Southern California Edison as an example of model energy production and conservation. A leader in workplace wellness, the Department of Recreation was recently recognized by the American Heart Association as a PLATINUM Level Fit Friendly Worksite. Now after five decades, the Department of Recreation is experiencing a new era of excellence. As the 2014-2015 academic year launches, the department is celebrating by announcing a number of exciting changes. The Leisure Review/ Living Arts programs are now called Gaucho REC (Recreation and Exercise Classes). Created in Rob Gym in 1985, The Wellness and Fitness Institute is getting an extreme makeover and will now serve our students and community in its new location in the Rec Cen. These programs and all things Recreation can be found in our new quarterly publication we call the diRECtory. We invite you to check it out, try something new and join us for many more great adventures in the years ahead.

The Wellness & Fitness Institute is a human performance lab designed to provide education, experience and personal health/fitness assessment. Utilizing various assessment tools, Wellness Institute staff will guide participants through a

series of tests and measurements to determine an individual’s fitness level and personal wellbeing. Upon completion of assessments students will be referred to classes, programs or experienced health/fitness professionals in an effort to further personal growth and wellbeing. The institute also serves as a training ground for students participating in the

Department of Exercise and Sport Studies’ certificate programs.
