CLASS LOCATIONS consist of a wide variety of locations around campus. Be sure to find out exactly where your class is being held before the first class meeting. See page 8 for a map of our facilities.

PARKING is $4 after 5pm Mon-Fri, and all day Saturday and Sunday. Rates vary Monday-Friday 6am-5pm depending on time parked. Parking rates and regulations are subject to change.

REGISTRATION for all classes begins Monday, June 2nd. You may register online, in person at the Cashier's Office in the Recreation Center or by mail using the coupon on page 3. Online or mail-in registration not accepted for Wine Tasting or SCUBA Diving classes. Mail-in registra-tion not recommended for Yoga classes as they tend to sell out quickly and priority is given on a first come first served basis. Hours at the Cashier's Office are: Monday thru Friday 8:30am-5:30pm. REFUNDS: There are no refunds except those granted at the discretion of the ad-ministrative supervisor during the first two weeks of each quarter, should medical or other extenuating circumstances dictate.

TRANSFERS to another class or section time may be made up until one week after the first class meeting.

CREDIT, in all instances, excluding those mentioned above, may be offered to program participants who for legitimate reasons cannot be accommodated through the refund or transfer process.

LIVING ARTS CLASSES are for recre-ational purposes only; you can learn a new skill, fine tune an old one, or simply keep in shape. There are no pressures, exams or grades-just relax and enjoy! Classes meet once or twice weekly throughout the day and evening. All Living Arts classes are open to UCSB students, faculty, staff, alumni, affiliates and community members. CLASS FEES cover instructors' salaries, publicity, use of equipment and some class supplies. You may need to purchase additional supplies for individual projects. Students may watch first class at no cost. In order to participate, you must pay for class in full or pay $5 drop in fee to the night greeter. (checks only) Drop in fee option is only available at the first class session and will not be applied to the class fee should you decide to continue attending. Students may not pay on a class-by-class basis. Payment by cash, check or Visa/Master-Card – No BARC Billing.

UCSB STUDENTS are eligible for a reduced fee for many courses. Please be aware that this discount is only available after you have paid your UCSB Registra-tion/Tuition fees for the quarter. If you have not yet paid your tuition you will not show up in our system as eligible for the reduced rate. If this is the case, you should wait to register for the Leisure Review course, the price difference WILL NOT be refunded after the fact.

HOLIDAYS have been taken into con-sideration and most class dates have been extended to provide make-up sessions. Classes do not meet July 4th or Sept. 1.

Come have fun in the sun or simply cool off by the pool this summer at UCSB. The Recreation Center is open to the greater Santa Barbara community for summer memberships. A family of four can purchase a summer pass to the Rec-reation Center for less than a day spent at Disneyland. A mere 15-minute drive from downtown brings you to the most beauti-ful pools in Santa Barbara, featuring a hot tub spa, shallow water pool, 25yd pool, a 50 x 25 meter pool and a diving well with 3 diving boards.

The Recreation Department also offers an array of water programs designed for all ages and interests:

•Summer Day Camp participants enjoy daily visits to the pool as part of an action-packed day.

•Surf & Kayak Camp offers children a playful day at the beach learning to surf, kayak and engage in environmental educa-tion.

•Junior Lifeguards, are you up for the challenge? This program is open to 8-17 year-olds who are ready to work their bodies and minds in the ocean and sand gaining skills in first aid and water safety.

•Our swim lesson program has top-notch instructors. Group lessons are age and level dependent.

•Want to stay fit but tired of swimming laps? Water Fitness is a challenging class, set to music and is suitable for participants of all fitness levels.

•Interested in SCUBA or Kayaking? Check out our instructional classes.

• Looking for a water adventure at your own pace? Surfboard and SUP rentals are available through the Adventure Rental Center.

We hope to see you in and around the water this summer!

Ocean kayaking is an ideal sport for the Santa Barbara area. The beautiful natural vistas, the kelp beds rich in marine life, and the south facing beaches offer opportunities from idyllic protected coastal excursions to kayak surfing at point breaks and paddlers can find secluded beaches close to many accessible launching sites. While touring the local coast, paddlers usually see a variety of sea life. Curious seals and sea lions pop their heads up to spy on the slender boats as they glide quietly through the water. Dolphin and whales have occasionally been spotted dur-ing our outings.

WALL INSTRUCTOR COURSEThe Climbing Wall Instructor Course

provides instructors and potential instructors with in depth and standardized understand-ing of the skills essential to teaching climb-ing in an indoor setting. It is the first step in a sequential approach to professional climb-ing instructor development. The course rein-forces the importance of teaching technically accurate information and debunks many common climbing myths. It also emphasizes the presentation of sound fundamental skills to climbing gym participants, the formation of risk assessment and risk management skills and basic problem solving skills such as belay transitions and on wall coaching and assist techniques. Participants will be assessed on both their core knowledge and their ability to effectively teach and coach related skills. Successful completion results in a certification with the Professional Climbing Instructors’Association (PCIA).

HIGH SIERRA BACKPACKINGSpend 4 days on the spectacular eastern

Spend 4 days exploring the spectacular Southern High Sierras! Welcome to the Cottonwood Lakes! If you have never had the opportunity to drive up the 395 and into the back bone of the Sierra Mountains this is your chance! Late summer is the perfect time of year to enjoy the many sparkling lakes, moderate temperatures and alpine wildflowers. We will hike into the mountains above Lone Pine, an area treasured for its pristine mirror lakes. Our pace will be casual with at least one layover day to allow for exploration higher into the alpine terrain, and time for fishing or swimming in one of the lakes. Since this is a multi-day backpack-ing adventure we advise previous experience and/or good physical condition and stamina. Generally we will be hiking between 2-3 miles per day at high elevation and will camp above 10,000 feet. The fee includes round-trip transportation, breakfasts and dinners while camping, camping fees, permit fees and group equipment. You must supply your own lunches and personal equipment.

OVERNIGHT COASTAL KAYAK Prerequisite: Ability to swim

We will first meet at the Rec Cen pool for a session to review skills discussed in the

Kayak I course. This will provide the oppor-tunity to get comfortable with the boats and practice recovery techniques and basic skills. On Saturday we will meet at Campus Point and then drive to Gaviota to begin our tour. After packing our kayaks, we will launch and enjoy the trip along the coast with a nice lunch stop along the way. Our campsite will be in one of the state park campgrounds along the way. Sunday we will continue along the coast with our final destination being Campus Point at UCSB.

Fee includes kayaking equipment, transportation, breakfast and dinner, group cooking equipment, camping fees and trip guides. You must supply your own lunches and personal equipment.

SANTA CRUZ ISLAND ADVENTURE PreTrip meeting and last day to register is August 18th

Travel time to Scorpion Anchorage is about an hour depending on weather. We commonly see sea lions, dolphins and sometimes whales as we enjoy a scenic ride to the island together! After setting up camp we will spend the rest of the first day exploring the dramatic sea bluffs and relaxing in the coastal coves. Day two we will enjoy a fantastic hike to the top of the island, to take in the view of the entire channel and ocean beyond. If booked ahead

of time with the Adventure Program office, you may upgrade your island experience with a guided kayak tour (extra fee applied.) Come join us on another fantastic trip to the islands!
