TRANSCRIPT
What has been UCU’s journey
Located in Mukono, less than an hour’s drive from the capital city Kampala, Uganda Christian University is one of Uganda’s
leading teaching and research universities.
UCU is an authentic Christian institution established by the Church of Uganda in 1997 in response to a call for quality university education with a Christian perspective. The University replaced the historic Bishop Tucker Theological College which trained clergy and educators during its 84-year history from 1913-1997.
The local chief, Hamu Mukasa, granted land for the college to operate in Mukono. International partnerships were part of the Bishop Tucker Theological College’s missionary history.
The Church Mission Society teamed up with Ugandan leaders and others to assure the College had the necessary intellectual and other capital.
By the late 1990s, the Church of Uganda sought to have a broader impact on society through university education - not only educating clergy but other professionals as well. Hence, in 1997, UCU opened her doors to the very fi rst students. History has it that the University started with not more than 200 students. When I arrived at the University in 2001, the number had risen to more than 800 students. Through continued hard work, in 2004, UCU became the fi rst private university to get charter or accredited by the Government of Uganda. At that point the numbers started growing to date. The size of UCU was too small but today through negotiations and hard work, the University has over 92 acres.
Does UCU off er all courses
UCU off ers over 80 programmes diploma, bachelor’s, master’s and PhD programmes which are designed to develop a cadre of professionals with integrity, power of critical inquiry, logical thought and independent judgment with a Christian perspective.
The programmes are off ered in three intakes of, Easter (January), Trinity (May) and Advent (September) semesters. Our students are in demand in the job market because of a long-term-built track record of discipline, integrity and professionalism that is synonymous with the UCU brand. For a university to be an academic giant, you need to have a critical mass of PhDs, today UCU has over 60 staff s with PhDs, which is a great achievement for the university. The university has enough staff s who are readily available to off er quality education to Ugandans.
For the person up-country, do they have to come to Mukono for studies
UCU has fi ve locations across Uganda, and they all off er students an access to a fully accredited, fl exible degree programs without the need to commute to the main campus in Mukono. There is a western campus in Kabale District which attracts students from as far as Burundi
UCU at the epitome of quality education in Uganda
and Rwanda. Besides Kabale, UCU also has a Campus in Arua which was established in 2003. It was formerly, St. Paul’s Regional Theological College, off ering diploma and certifi cate courses in Theology and also training of Lay Readers in the West Nile region and beyond.
We also have UCU, known as Mbale University College which started in 2003 with three staff and 46 students off ering only Business Administration and Social Science programmes both at degree and diploma levels. However, in 2006, the Campus became a Constituent College of Uganda Christian University. The college took advantage of its location in the heart of Mbale town to grow in academic stature by introducing evening programmes to cater for the working-class as well as expanding the academic programmes.
The fi nally the UCU, Kampala Campus, which was established in 2003. Since its inception, the Campus has been housed at four locations. Since 2015, UCU Kampala Campus has been housed at Lubiri Ring Road, Mengo at the former Butikiro, which previously housed the Joint Clinical Research Center (JCRC). Last year, construction of a permanent UCU Kampala Campus home started. The new home is within the same area of Mengo, on Musajja Alumbwa Road next to Eagle’s Nest Primary School.
Why chose UCU from other Universities
UCU’s theme is off ering ‘A Complete Education for A Complete Person’. Hence our education integrates physical, social, emotional, and spiritual growth along with traditional academic learning.
With sparkling green spaces, breathtaking surroundings and inspired architecture around the university, UCU will off er students and
staff s spectacular settings in which to study, rest and play. This can be proved after it was voted by christianuniversitiesonline.org as the most beautiful Christian university in Africa and the 50th in the world.
UCU has a well-equipped modern library which off ers a conducive learning environment that enhances students learning and research goals. It has a sitting capacity of 1,200 people, stores 250,000 volumes of books and 200 computers. The halls of residence are equipped with computer laboratories with internet hotspots where one can enjoy high-speed internet connectivity making everyone feel home away from home. All the halls of residence have common rooms where students can relax and watch television in their free time. At the dining students are eat nutritious and well-balanced meals.
The university also off ers students at-least 75 percent WiFi coverage in addition to its ten computer laboratories mainly for teaching and research purposes, and use of online library services.
We also have a fi xed tuition fees policy that enables parents and students to plan better. They pay a fi xed amount from entry to their fi nal semester.
To absorb graduates in the job market, UCU and her constituent colleges issues transcripts on
graduation day. We also hold seven graduation ceremonies across the campus. The complex sits near the well-equipped gym where athletes train. Other sports off ered are rugby, athletics, netball, tae-kwon-do chess and badminton.
Medical and Health services are guided by the University Health and Safety Policy. The policy sets out to protect and promote the health and safety of staff , students, visitors and others who are part of the UCU Community. With the above I believe graduates possess essential skills, that can reason and analyze, cooperate in teams, and are trustworthy.
Scholarships and Sports Facilities
UCU has state-of-the-art sports facilities and off ers at least seven sets of scholarships to talented sports, needy, theology and exceptionally bright students, among other categories. Our modern sports complex gives students and staff a healthy balance of study/work and exercise. We have a gym that is fully furnished with modern equipment.
Popular sports at UCU include football, rugby, basketball, volleyball, netball, woodball, tennis, athletics and many others. UCU has a good record of sporting activities and her teams have won several sporting accolades. Because of UCU’s state-of-the-art sports facilities, UCU has hosted several local and international sports tournaments.
Voted the most beautiful Christian University in Africa and 50th in the world by christianuniversitiesonline, Uganda Christian University (UCU) has stood the taste of life to become one the leading power house in education. Recently Vision Group held an interview with the Universities Vice Chancellor Rev. Canon Dr. John Senyonyi, how the University has evolved from grass to grace.
