Uddyam is the annual Innovation and Entrepreneurship event of S.P. Jain Institute of Management and Research that aims to be an enterprise building exercise and serve as a platform for commercialization of innovations.

Uddyam '10 will be conducted in association with Technopreneur Promotion Program (TePP) of the Department of Science and Technology (Govt. of India). A pioneer in promoting technology based innovations, TePP has helped many innovators patent their prototypes over the past few years. Though many of them have the potential to become successful ventures, there is a huge divide between the innovators who make these products, the entrepreneurs who can take them to the markets and investors who can provide the funding.

At Uddyam, we aim to bridge the gap between the innovators, entrepreneurs and investors. We present to you validated TePP innovations and you prepare 'Innovation-plans' and tell us how you think these innovations can be commercialized. The top six 'I-plans' will be selected and presented in front of an esteemed panel of judges and also interested entrepreneurs and investors. At Uddyam, we provide the right ecosystem for enterprise building!

WHAT IS UDDYAM?

Uddyam'10 will kick-start with a keynote speaker address by Dr. Y.S. Rajan.

Dr. Y.S. Rajan has a proven track record of excellence as a Scientist, Technologist, Administrator, Organisation Builder and Leader, Diplomat, Writer and Poet. Currently the Principal Adviser to Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), he is a well recognized authority and thought leader on technology development and business management.

Having made key contributions to space research in India as the Scientific Secretary, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), he has also worked with Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and NASA for about three years. Dr. Y.S Rajan has led Indian delegations to United Nations (UN) and has visited about 40 countries as a part of cooperative efforts in science, technology and business.

He is also a prolific writer and has co-authored the book India 2020 - A vision for the New Millennium along with Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam. Through his keynote address we wish to deliberate on the right road ahead for promoting entrepreneurship and setting the right platform to bring innovations to life.

INNOVATION LIST

The innovation is a new extendable pedal-crank system that generates double the torque/power compared to traditional crank under same force exerted by leg and it can be mounted on a bicycle, tricycle, pedicab, manually driven airplane and several other manually driven vehicles/implements and gadgets, etc. It can be used to generate electrical energy, charging battery, running a pump-set etc.

Manually driven vehicles move by the torque generated out of the force exerted by the leg of the driver on the pedal. The magnitude of torque here is equal to the force multiplied by the perpendicular distance i.e. the length of the crank. Increasing the crank length increases the radius of leg movement and makes driving difficult. The present innovation is a means to increase the length to about two times the length of an average crank without increasing or altering the radius of the circular path through which the legs of the driver move. This means that the leg movement will remain same as that of a traditional pedal-crank and that the ground clearance and upper clearance will remain exactly the same while the power available at the sprocket is double that of a traditional arrangement. The sitting position and the leg position with respect to the body and the frame of the bicycle will remain exactly the same. In short, a driver will find no difference in driving except the additional power.

Working

This is very useful for a sports bicycle, bicycle especially for ladies, bicycle for elderly people and, also for manually driven vehicle for physically challenged people. It will make rickshaw (tricycle) and flatbed (trolly) competitive to motorized vehicles. Boats driven manually with a propeller, manually driven lawnmower, tiller, digger and several other manually driven implements can be made faster and more efficient when driven by this pedal-crank. With the increased torque an improved version of bicycle i.e. a new micro-personal utility vehicle in the form of a tricycle for short distance travel perhaps with a co-passenger is a reality with the present crank. Several implements have been already conceived which had not been thought feasible earlier. A human-powered aero plane is a distinct possibility now.

The Pedal Crank Advantage

2 Cost of one unit of pedal crank assembly: Rs. 500 for either side.

ClimaCon technology refers to thermally regulated wearable technology. The products include ClimaMet, ClimaNeck and ClimaGear. ClimaMet is a helmet that cools or heats the inner of the helmet as desired by the user. Similarly, ClimaNeck is a neck accessory that removes or provides heat to keep the user comfortable. Similar to ClimaMet and ClimaNeck, ClimaGear is a jacket/vest that either removes heat from the body to keep the user cool or adds heat to keep the user regardless of the external environment.

ClimaCon is a patent pending (PCT filed and own 100% rights) that uses novel combination of thermoelectric technology and a novel heat sink with electronic temperature control – all built into a slim vest/jacket or a fashionable neck scarf or a sturdy helmet. The vest/jacket: ClimaGear, neck scarf: ClimaNeck and, helmet: ClimaMet can heat or cool on demand, as needed by the user. It will reduce heat stress in hot temperature conditions and increase productivity. ClimaCon is designed to supplement the human body's thermal regulation. It is designed to act as traditional clothing in terms of sweat evaporation capability to allow heat dissipation of the body. The cooling/heating points are strategically located on places where sweat production is minimal and high concentration of blood vessels for maximal effect. ClimaGear is mobile, quiet, lightweight (Jacket-1.5 kgs, Vest-1.2kgs, Neck cooler-140gms which is 200% lighter then current cooling system in the market), failure tolerant (Modular), easy to use, with no moving parts.

Working

Outdoor workers, military, and sports enthusiasts' personnel often perform or live in harsh weather and extreme heat conditions. Personnel working in extreme heat are often subjected to heat stress and other heat related aliments. Additionally, it has been proven that there is productivity loss in personnel working and performing extreme heat. It can be stressful and often lead to accidents and improper decision making and these can increase the mortality rate in the soldiers. Research also suggests that factory output is lower in hot seasons, accident

ofrequency is increased at temperatures above 25 C, and mistakes are increased at temperatures ohigher then 33 C. In summary hot conditions lead to financial loss, morale loss to

workers/soldiers, and increases heat related health problems. Currently there is no effective solution in the market that addresses this unmet need.

The ClimaCon Advantage

Unit cost for ClimaMet- Rs 3000-5000, ClimaNeck- Rs. 5000, Climagear – Rs. 30,000 to 50,000/-

A remote controlled aircraft for aerial spraying of pesticides or fertilizers. Designed as a stable, slow flying machine it can land and take off from short runways. It can carry a payload of 50 Kgs and can be used for aerial spraying over farms or difficult to reach plantations. The remote is a simple system that can be operated even by people who have little or no knowledge about flying.

3) AERO SPRAY

It is designed with a high winged wide body (similar to J3 Piper cub) and can take a maximum payload of 50kgs of pesticides or insecticides. It is fitted with a 12 Volt jet pump to pump the liquid through nozzle disposers, which will spray the entire 50 kg in 10 minutes. The aircraft is equipped to fly for 25 mins and this timing includes the takeoff and landing. It can fly at a minimum speeds of 15 KM/H and with a stall speed of 10KM/H. The aircraft can fly steady at low altitudes and can fly to a distance of 1.1 KM. The aircraft is fitted with a petrol engine with an oil mixture of 20% like any usual motorcycles. The remote is a simple four channel system which is very easy to operate.

The prototype is made out of Balsa and Plywood which is easy to construct as an Aero modeler, but the commercial version will be of Resin mould with aluminum supports and other strong and light material.

Working

So far only bigger aircrafts are being used in India for this purpose which cannot be used by small or individual farmers. This aircraft can be used by farmers with smaller land holdings. It is also designed for spraying pesticides over coconut trees, banana plantations, forest areas, and inaccessible lands. Short runways needed for the aero spray ensure that it can easily be used all cases.

The Aero Spray advantage

Cost of one commercial unit of remote controlled aero plane: Rs. 4-5 lakhs.

MozziQuit is a unique eco friendly mosquito trap that traps and kills female mosquitoes in order to eradicate the mosquito menace.

Once the power switch is turned on, “MozziQuit” Mosquito Trap will generate heat and moisture equivalent to excess of human body heat. Due to its excellent luring effect all the mosquitoes in the room or adjacent area on external use will be attracted towards the trap. The attracted Mosquitoes will be pulled in through the inlet into the collection container. These trapped mosquitoes will be killed instantly while they travel the distance between the inlet to the collection container using a specialized killing mechanism.

Working

"MozziQuit" Mosquito Trap can be effectively used in bedrooms or living rooms of a standard size of 120 sq.ft. upto 10,000 sq.ft. provided they are open halls without barrier of walls.

Usage of MozziQuit will lead to slow eradication of the mosquitos prevalent in that area. User can also see the number of dead mosquitoes trapped and killed when they dump the dead mosquitoes from the removable collection container.

The MozziQuit Advantage

The manufacturing cost per unit is approximately Rs. 1200/-
