UDL AND THE IPAD
Jada Kidd 2012
WHAT IS UDL?
UDL is a framework for designing
educational environments that help all
students gain knowledge, skills, and
enthusiasm for learning. (Orkwis &
McLane, 1998; Rose & Meyer, 2002).
UDL CONTINUES
UDL is a framework with three guiding
principles that parallel three distinct
learning networks in the brain:
recognition, strategy, and affect (Rose &
Meyer, 2002).
3 GUIDING PRINCIPLES
PRINCIPLE ONE
Multiple means of representation to
give learners various ways of
acquiring information and knowledge
PRINCIPLE TWO
Multiple means of expression to
provide learners alternatives for
demonstrating what they know
PRINCIPLE THREE
Multiple means of engagement to
tap into learners‘ interests, challenge
them appropriately, and motivate
them to learn
THE IPAD FITS INTO THE UDL
UDL AND THE IPAD
iPad inspires creativity and hands-on learning with
features you won’t find in any other educational
tool
Powerful built-in apps let students engage with
content in interactive ways
UDL AND THE IPAD
Students can find information in an instant,
and access an entire library wherever they
go.
Multi-Touch textbooks, iPad takes learning
to a whole new level.
THE IPAD USEFUL TO STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES
applications available for them easily and
cheaply replace bulky, expensive older forms of
assistive technology
touch-screen design is easier to use
The screen’s size makes the gadget user
friendly for students with vision problems
THE IPAD AND REPRESENTATION
1. A personal electronic whiteboard, delivers information
interactively, apps update automatically
2. Great one to one instruction, provides multiple means of
comprehension
3. Easy access to web, multiple access to acquiring
knowledge
4. Apps can work as instruction modules
IPAD AND EXPRESSION
1. Student creativity and hands on learning
2. Multiple means of demonstrating mastery of content
3. Interactive/Challenging – great for kinesthetic learner
4. Students have ability to manipulate content
IPAD AND ENGAGEMENT
1. Apps are engaging for students, promotes higher order
thinking skills
2. Opportunity to for students to involve their own interest
and provides relevance to learning
3. Provides immediate feedback and helps students monitor
own learning
4. Reinforce target learning
UDL AND IPAD SUMMARY
iPads:
Mobile and student friendly
Powerful resources, versatile, provides options
No more “one size fits all” curriculum
Great fit in the UDL design
