Visual Udyog is a comprehensive business automation solution covering all key functional areas of
an organization. This product is built specifically for attending the critical business requirement for
Chemical and Pharmaceutical companies
Pharmaceutical Industry in India
Current Situation
The Pharmaceutical industry in India is the world's third-largest in terms of volume
India is now among the top five pharmaceutical emerging markets of the world.
Due to frequent change in the Excise structure, many SMEs got opportunity to produce goods
under the brand names of larger/ global companies on job work basis, mostly in tax-free states
like UK, J&K, HP and JH
However, maintaining Compliance with the revised Schedule M Good Manufacturing Practices
(GMP) is a major challenge for the SMEs in this industry
Production Planning & Control and Inventory Management continue to remain the major areas
where companies belonging to this industry face maximum challenges - This is majorly due to lack
of real effective products within pocket-friendly budget
6
Chemical Industry in India
Current Situation
Although the pharmaceutical industry is often considered as a chemical industry , it has many
different characteristics that puts it in a separate category. Other closely related industries
include petroleum, glass, paint, ink, sealant, adhesive, and food processing manufacturers.
The Chemical Industry in India is based on the idea of Diversification. The industry is a multi
product and multi-faceted one.
Chemical Industry in India may be broadly classified into following sub-industries:
o Inorganic Chemicals
o Drugs and Pharmaceuticals
o Plastics and Petrochemicals
o Specialty and Fine Chemicals like Dyes and Paints
o Pesticides, Fertilizers and other Agro-chemical products
7
Major Common Challenges
Production Planning & Control in Chemical and Pharmaceutical Companies
Combining Functions – It is desirable that a minimum changes be made after schedules are
established. This objective can be approached if the amount of work scheduled for the factory or
department is equal or slightly greater than the production cycle.
Follow-up – When jobs are started and completed on schedule, there should be very little
concern about the meeting of commitments. Optimum operation of the plant is attained only if
the original plan has been carefully prepared to utilize the manufacturing facilities fully and
effectively.
Re-planning – Often required in manufacturing. Changes in market conditions, manufacturing
methods, etc. affecting the plant will often indicate that a new manufacturing plan is required.
Common Questions remain Unanswered for a SME
How to make initial Master Production Schedule that is equally feasible and possible?
How to limit the number of re-planning activities?
How to be reactive to disturbances in materials flow?
How to provide planners with accurate information about material resources available which
often lead to bloated inventory and in accurately promised delivery dates to the customers?
8
Practical Problems
Chemical and Pharmaceutical companies suffer in absence of an advanced
technical product which can really take care of end-to-end Production
related processes. Here are how:
The objective of any production-planning model is to minimize the production costs. Production
costs are the inventory costs and set up costs of end products, intermediate products, inventory
costs of by-products and recovered raw materials and cost of fresh raw materials.
SMEs usually fail to set up an effective model which can actually help them in reducing the
production costs. Without a product which can automate the production planning process, this
seems to remain impossible
Scheduling is another major problem -this consists of two parts: one is the finished goods scheduling
and the other is the intermediate products scheduling. They are different problems because the
production environment is different in finished goods and the intermediate products.
Again, setting up proper (accurate) scheduling, seems to be impossible without a Business
Automation product
Production Planning and Scheduling in turn covers many associated processes and compliances which
are extremely critical for any Chemical and Pharmaceutical company.
