    Director's Comments ~IU*Jc.~~g Contents ~The Uni ted Eas t Ath letics Assoc iation (UEM) Fun FU n Sat-urday Summer program started In 1994 with jus t 3 c lasses ,15 volunteers, and 50 s tudents. This pas t summer, we had39 classes, over 350 s tudent s, and more t han 100 dedi-cated and knowledgeable volunteers. Our Fun Fun Satur -day is a f ree eight -wElek program Whose mission Is to pro-v ide a safe, nur turing env ironment for chi ldren and volun-teers to develop new ski lls, gain new knowledge, and makelasting friendships.Students this year were again able to par ticipate inone ath-l et ic and one non -a th le ti c c lass , whi ch a ll owed for a bal -ance between exe rci si ng t he body and m ind. Our annua lSports Day competi tion was held Jn Columbus Park duringt he midd le o f t he s ummer, and we ended our p rogr am w it hour annual F ie ld Trip which 'Wasat Sunken Meadows StatePark. In bet ween , many le sson s were t aug ht b y ou r ta l-ented pool of Volunteers to our diverse s tudent populat ion.2011 was a great year!Ihave been velunteermq with Fun Fun Saturday for over 10years now, but 201 t was a spec ia l one f or me ,as i tWas thef irst year I took on the respons ib il ity of being the program'sdirector.     Students learnedthe basic skillsto masterthe strategicgame of Chinese Chess.     I n the Beginner class, students learned Windows, organiza-tion of folders, typing, Internet search engines and makingslideshows using PowerPoint. They also learnedhow to use a search engine to obtain information that theylaterused in their PowerPoint presentations.In the Advanced class, students covered web development,components of Internet and programming. They learnedsimpleprogramming skillsviathe game Light Botandwerein-troduced to HTML Basic,Javascript andbasic Java program-ming techniques. Students also practiced typing atthe endofeachclass.

    Students engaged in a very personalized form of writingwhile learning howto utilize different structures and beinginspired by different writing samples.     Giving new meanng to the saying "foodfor thought," students learned about thedifferent nutrients that fuel their brainsand bodies. Every week, studentslearned different topics, such astypes ofnutrients, food groups, issues involvingfastfood and ourfood system. They alsolearned how to make a healthy trail mxsnack and tropical fruit salad.
