Match backgroundBarring a record comeback, Beşiktaş JK will bow out of European competition for the season as they take on FCBayern München in their round of 16 second leg, trailing 5-0 after a chastening first game in Munich.

• Thomas Müller and Robert Lewandowski both scored twice at the Fußball Arena München on 20 February, KingsleyComan getting the other as Bayern recorded the biggest home first-leg victory in the UEFA Champions Leagueknockout phase.

• No club has ever managed to recover a five-goal first-leg deficit in UEFA competition. Four have overturned a four-goal first-leg loss: VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach beat Real Madrid CF 5-1 at home in the 1985/86 UEFA Cup thirdround, only to lose the return 4-0. Leixões SC (against FC La Chaux-de-Fonds, 1961/62 European Cup Winners' Cupfirst round) and FK Partizan (Queens Park Rangers FC, 1984/85 UEFA Cup second round) overturned 6-2 awaylosses with 5-0 and 4-0 home victories respectively.

• FC Barcelona hold the record for the biggest first-leg deficit overturned in the UEFA Champions League era, recovering from a 4-0 away loss to Paris Saint-Germain with a 6-1 home win in last season's round of 16.

• Beşiktaş became the first Turkish team to win a UEFA Champions League group, finishing top of Group G to reachthe round of 16 for the first time, although they came up short against their vastly experienced opponents in Munich.

• This is Bayern's 14th round of 16 tie, and the German champions – who finished second in Group B – are closing inon the quarter-finals for the seventh year in a row.

• This is the only tie in the round of 16 to feature two reigning domestic champions.

Previous meetings• The teams crossed paths for the only previous time in the 1997/98 group stage, both games ending in 2-0 Bayernvictories. Thomas Helmer and Mario Basler got the goals in the first game in Munich.

• Carsten Jancker (5) and Helmer again (31) were on target in the first half of the Istanbul fixture.

• The line-ups at Istanbul's BJK İnönü Stadyumu on 26 November 1997 were:Beşiktaş: Fevzi Tuncay, Erkan Avseren, Topraktepe Serdar (Osman Üstünel 80), Alpay Özalan, Yankov, TayfurHavutçu, Ertuğrul Sağlam, Hikmet Çapanoglu (Amokachi 62), Recep Çetin (Emre Eren 59), Lechkov, OktayDerelioğlu.Bayern: Kahn, Kuffour, Nerlinger, Matthäus, Tarnat, Fink (Babbel 87), Hamann, Helmer, Scholl (Zickler 83), Elber,Jancker (Rizzitelli 81).

• Bayern finished first in the section on 12 points, two places and six points above their eliminated Turkish rivals.

• Croatian goalkeeper Marjan Mrmić was part of the Beşiktaş squad although he did not feature in either game. He isnow the Turkish team's goalkeeper coach.

Match backgroundBeşiktaş • This is the first time Beşiktaş have reached the UEFA Champions League knockout rounds. Their best EuropeanCup campaign came in 1986/87 when they got to the quarter-finals before losing 7-0 on aggregate to FC DynamoKyiv.

• Beşiktaş won 2-1 at RB Leipzig on matchday six – their sole victory in six trips to Germany, including this first leg (D1L4). They have now scored two goals away to Bundesliga clubs, conceding 11.

• Beşiktaş were also 2-1 winners at home to Leipzig on matchday two, their first victory against German opponents atthe eighth attempt (D1 L6). They scored twice and conceded 12 in those first seven matches.

• Beşiktaş lost their only previous two-legged knockout tie against a German club 3-1 on aggregate to BorussiaDortmund in the 1989/90 European Cup Winners' Cup first round (0-1 home, 1-2 away).

• The Turkish side had their four-match winning streak at home in Europe halted by the 1-1 draw with AS Monaco FCon matchday four; they subsequently drew by the same scoreline at home to FC Porto. Beşiktaş are unbeaten in theirlast 12 European matches in Istanbul (W5 D7) since a 3-1 loss to Club Brugge KV in the 2014/15 UEFA EuropaLeague round of 16. That is the sole reverse in their last 20 European home games (W10 D9).

• Beşiktaş drew all three home games in last season's group stage, and have drawn six of their last seven Istanbulfixtures in the UEFA Champions League, qualifying included. The defeat of Leipzig and the 3-1 third qualifying roundwin against Feyenoord in August 2014 are their only home victories in their last 11 matches in this competition (D6L3), again including qualifying – although they are unbeaten in their last eight such fixtures in Istanbul.

• Beşiktaş have won only five of the 22 UEFA competition ties in which they lost the away first leg, most recently4

Competition factsUEFA Champions League knockout stage: Did you know?• Teams have overturned a first-leg deficit to go through 41 times, including AS Roma in this season's round of 16.Only twice – AFC Ajax's defeat of Panathinaikos FC in the 1995/96 semi-finals and FC Internazionale Milano's victoryagainst FC Bayern München in the 2010/11 round of 16 – has a side progressed after a home first-leg loss.

• The biggest losing margin a side has overhauled was achieved by FC Barcelona against Paris Saint-Germain in the2016/17 last 16, when they lost 4-0 away but progressed thanks to a 6-1 home success. That eclipsed the previousrecord held by RC Deportivo La Coruña in the 2003/04 quarter-finals, when they went down 4-1 at AC Milan but won4-0 at home.

• Twenty-nine ties have been decided on away goals, including ten where the triumphant team lost the first leg.

• In all, 28 ties have required extra time. Twelve have been settled by extra time alone: five round of 16 encounters, five quarter-finals including Real Madrid CF-FC Bayern München in 2016/17, the 2007/08 semi-final between Chelseaand Liverpool FC, and the 2013/14 final.

• Sixteen ties have gone to penalties, including seven finals – 1996, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2008, 2012 and 2016. The firsttwo-legged tie decided on spot kicks was PSV Eindhoven's 4-2 victory over Olympique Lyonnais on 13 April 2005after a 2-2 aggregate draw, still the only quarter-final to go to penalties.

• The 2015/16 round of 16 tie between Club Atlético de Madrid and PSV was the first to finish goalless after two legs.Thirteen have finished 1-0 on aggregate, most recently Real Madrid CF's defeat of Manchester City FC in the 2015/16semi-finals.

• Liverpool FC (versus FC Porto) and Bayern (versus Beşiktaş JK) both won 5-0 in the 2017/18 round of 16, equallingthe knockout phase record for the biggest first-leg lead – Real Madrid's 6-1 victory at FC Schalke 04 in 2013/14 andBayern's 5-0 success at Sporting Clube de Portugal in 2008/09, both also in the round of 16. Bayern eventually beatSporting 12-1 after a 7-1 stroll in the home second leg; that tie also featured more goals (13) over its two legs thanany UEFA Champions League knockout tie.

• Bayern hold the record for the largest margin of victory in a UEFA Champions League knockout match havingbeaten both FC Basel 1893 (2011/12) and FC Shakhtar Donetsk (2014/15) 7-0 in the round of 16 second leg.

• Clarence Seedorf is the only player to lift the European Cup with three clubs (Ajax 1995, Real Madrid 1998, Milan2003, 2007). Bob Paisley (Liverpool 1977, 1978, 1981) was the first coach to win three times, a feat Carlo Ancelotti(Milan 2003, 2007, Real Madrid 2014) replicated.

• In 2014 Ancelotti also became the fifth coach to win the trophy with two clubs; Ottmar Hitzfeld (Borussia Dortmund1997, Bayern 2001), Ernst Happel (Feyenoord 1970, Hamburger SV 1983), José Mourinho (FC Porto 2004,Internazionale 2010) and Jupp Heynckes (Real Madrid 1998, Bayern 2013) had previously achieved the feat.

• In 2016/17 Real Madrid became the first team to successfully defend the UEFA Champions League trophy, withMilan (1989, 1990) the previous club to win consecutive European Cups. Milan (1994, 1995), Ajax (1995, 1996),Juventus (1996, 1997) and Manchester United (2008, 2009) have all returned to the UEFA Champions League finalas holders only to lose.

• Only two sides have ever won the UEFA Champions League on home soil: Dortmund (1997, final in Munich) andJuventus (1996, final in Rome). Manchester United lost the 2011 final in London and 12 months later Bayern werebeaten in the showpiece in their own stadium, the Fußball Arena München.

UEFA Champions League: Did you know?• Lionel Messi became the first player to score five goals in a match in FC Barcelona's 7-1 triumph against Bayer 04Leverkusen on 7 March 2012, a feat reproduced by FC Shakhtar Donetsk's Luiz Adriano at FC BATE Borisov on 21October 2014. Eleven more players, also including Messi, have scored four times in a game, most recently CristianoRonaldo for Real Madrid on matchday six in 2015/16.

• Cristiano Ronaldo set a new record for a UEFA Champions League group stage with 11 goals in 2015/16, eclipsinghis own mark of nine goals in 2013/14, which Luiz Adriano matched in 2014/15 and Ronaldo himself equalled in2017/18. Lionel Messi got ten goals in 2016/17; Zlatan Ibrahimović (2013/14), Ruud van Nistelrooy (2004/05), FilippoInzaghi and Hernán Crespo (both 2002/03) managed eight.

• Messi's hat-trick against Manchester City FC on matchday three of the 2016/17 competition was his seventh in thecompetition, a record Ronaldo matched against Club Atlético de Madrid in the 2016/17 semi-finals.

• SS Lazio goalkeeper Marco Ballotta is the oldest player to compete at this level, having been aged 43 years and 252
