Match backgroundManchester City FC and FC Shakhtar Donetsk both opened Group F with fine wins, although the portents point to ahome victory at the City of Manchester Stadium on matchday two.

• While these teams have never met before, Shakhtar have lost all but one of their matches in England and may havetheir work cut out against a City side who equalled their biggest win in the UEFA Champions League – group stage tofinal – in their first game. That said, Shakhtar's recent away form in Europe has been imperious.

Match backgroundManchester City• City are unbeaten in their last ten home matches in the UEFA Champions League (W7 D3), qualifying included, since a 2-1 defeat by Juventus on matchday one in 2015/16. That Juve loss was their fourth in six fixtures at the Cityof Manchester Stadium, with only one win in that run.

• Josep Guardiola's men took seven points at home in last season's group stage, beating VfL BorussiaMönchengladbach (4-0) and FC Barcelona (3-1) before a 1-1 draw with Celtic FC.

• City's only previous encounters with Ukrainian clubs came against Shakhtar's great rivals FC Dynamo Kyiv, whom they overcame 1-0 in Manchester in their 2010/11 UEFA Europa League round of 16 second leg (1-2aggregate) and held 0-0 in the second leg of a 2015/16 UEFA Champions League round of 16 tie (3-1 aggregate).

• Third in last season's Premier League, City were 4-0 winners at Feyenoord on matchday one and are making a sixthsuccessive UEFA Champions League appearance – they have progressed to the round of 16 or beyond in each of thelast four campaigns.

• Last term, Guardiola's team came second in their section and lost on away goals to AS Monaco FC in the last 16 (5-3 home, 1-3 away).

Shakhtar• The Ukrainian champions have lost on five of their six trips to England, avoiding defeat only on their second visit, a1-1 draw at Tottenham Hotspur FC in a round of 32 second leg during their victorious UEFA Cup campaign of 2008/09(3-1 aggregate).

• In those five defeats, Shakhtar scored six goals and conceded 14, including a 5-1 loss at Arsenal FC in the 2010/11group stage. Their most recent English assignment was a 1-0 reverse at Manchester United FC in 2013/14.

• Shakhtar are unbeaten at home to Premier League clubs, however, with the record W4 D2. Home and away, it is W4D3 L5 F18 A19.

• Shakhtar, who started 2017/18 with a 2-1 win at home to SSC Napoli on matchday one, are making their seventhgroup stage appearance in eight seasons and their 12th in total – all since 2000. They have got to the last 16 on threeoccasions: 2010/11 (when they reached the quarter-finals), 2012/13 and 2014/15.

• In 2016/17, the Ukrainian side lost to BSC Young Boys in the third qualifying round (2-0 home, 0-2 away, 2-4 onpenalties). They eventually made it to the UEFA Europa League round of 32, going down to RC Celta de Vigo (1-0away, 0-2 home aet).

• Fernandinho was a Shakhtar player between 2005 and 2013 when he left for City, scoring 31 goals in 183 leagueappearances. He was named Ukraine's Premier League player of the year in 2007/08, and amassed six league titles, four Ukrainian Cups and the 2008/09 UEFA Cup.

Head coachJosep GuardiolaDate of birth: 18 January 1971Nationality: SpanishPlaying career: FC Barcelona, Brescia Calcio (twice), AS Roma, al-Ahly Club, Dorados de SinolaCoaching career: FC Barcelona B, FC Barcelona, FC Bayern München, Manchester City FC

• Known as 'Pep', he came up through Barcelona's youth ranks to win six Spanish Liga titles, one EuropeanChampion Clubs' Cup, a UEFA Cup Winners' Cup and two Copa del Rey trophies from 1990 to 2001. Also had spellswith Brescia, Roma, al-Ahly in Doha and Mexico's Dorados de Sinola before ending his playing career in 2006. Won40 caps and Olympic footballing gold with Spain in 1992, but missed the 1998 and 2002 FIFA World Cups throughinjury.

• Having coached Barcelona's B team, he took charge of the senior side in 2008 and won the UEFA ChampionsLeague, Spanish Liga and Copa del Rey in his first season. In the process he became the sixth man to have lifted theEuropean Cup as player and coach.

• That was just the beginning of a glorious four-season spell which yielded 14 trophies. In his second campaign,Guardiola steered Barcelona to a second Liga title as well as the Spanish and UEFA Super Cups and the FIFA ClubWorld Cup. Even more sucess followed in 2010/11 as Barcelona completed a hat-trick of Spanish titles and, for thesecond time under Guardiola, got the better of Manchester United FC in the UEFA Champions League final.

• In his final season, 2011/12, Guardiola's team won the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup once morebefore he signed off his reign with a second Copa del Rey triumph. After a year's break, Guardiola took charge ofBayern in June 2013, replacing Jupp Heynckes.

• Collected the UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup, German Cup and, with a record seven games to spare, theBundesliga title in his first season in Germany. Secured his second successive Bundesliga title the following season, and Bayern again dominated domestically in 2015/16, but all three of Guardiola's UEFA Champions Leaguecampaigns in Bavaria ended in the semi-finals. Opted for a new challenge at Manchester City in summer 2016 but hisfirst year in charge produced Guardiola's first trophy-less campaign as a coach.

Paulo FonsecaDate of birth: 5 March 1973 Nationality: PortuguesePlaying career: FC Barreirense, Leça FC, CF Os Belenenses, CS Marítimo, Vitória SC, CF Estrela da AmadoraCoaching career: CF Estrela da Amadora (youth), SU 1º Dezembro, Odivelas FC, CD Pinhalnovense, CD Aves, FCPaços de Ferreira (twice), FC Porto, SC Braga, FC Shakhtar Donetsk

• A central defender during his playing days, he was signed by Porto in 1995/96 but never trained or played for theDragons as he was immediately loaned to Leça; eventually moved to Vitória Guimarães after further spells withBelenenses and Marítimo.

• Hung up his boots aged 32 at Estrela da Amadora and started coaching the club's youth teams the following seasonbefore taking his first senior job at fourth-tier SU 1º Dezembro in 2007.

• Impressed by guiding third division Pinhalnovense to the quarter-finals of the Portuguese Cup in 2009/10 and2010/11, when his side lost 2-0 away to Porto.

• Assumed the reins at Aves and steered the northern club to third place in the second division and another cupquarter-final, prompting Paços de Ferreira to appoint him. Rewarded that faith by earning a third-place finish in2012/13, Paços's best-ever placing in the Portuguese top flight, and a UEFA Champions League play-off berth.

• On 10 June 2013 he signed a two-year deal to coach champions Porto, but left the following March. After a return toPaços de Ferreira, led Braga to fourth place in the league and victory in the Portuguese Cup in 2015/16 beforereplacing the long-serving Mircea Lucescu as Shakhtar coach; won a league and cup double in his first campaign inUkraine.
