DESCRIPTION

Peer Tutors are young people who help other young people to learn. UFA have been training Peer Tutors since 1997. Involving young people in leadership roles in learning is very powerful. They are able to motivate their peers and find creative ways of engaging them and supporting them in their learning. The added bonus is that Peer Tutoring gives them the opportunity to do this whilst learning valuable skills themselves.

“Peer Tutoring is one of the most powerful things I’ve seen; young people helping other young people to learn. Young people can connect with other young people in a way that adults can rarely do and they are fantastic role models for others.” (Sarah Burgess, UFA)

Benefits:There are many studies showing the benefits of Peer Tutoring on both the tutee’s and tutor’s academic and social development. Our own experience as well as academic studies show that:

What’s in the course:

This 2 day Peer Tutor training programme asks the young people involved to reflect on their own experiences of learning in different settings and then challenges them to use this understanding to effectively help others to learn. The course places great emphasis on the importance of positive relationships for learning and explores the importance of emotions and learning, how different people learn in different ways, and how to respond as a Peer Tutor to different scenarios that could arise. It is an interactive programme with lots of collaborative, team building activities.

About UFA Peer Tutor TrainingPeer Tutors are young people who help other young people to learn.

We see young people progress from Peer Tutoring to take on a whole range of leadership roles both within their own organisations and also with the UFA nationally.

Peer Tutors have: • Improved attitudes towards school

• Improved attainment

• Increased self-confidence

• Improved communication skills

• A greater interest in getting involved in leadership roles in school and beyond.

Other young people working with Peer Tutors look up to them and see them as positive role models. A large number of young people aspire to take on leadership roles themselves as a result.
