Even before there was a college in the Fraser Valley, there was a form of Continuing Studies. It was referred to as “night school” and run by local school districts. When Fraser Valley College was formed in 1974, the fledgling college took over programming in this area, renaming it Community Education, and later on Continuing Education, and ultimately Continuing Studies.

The mandate of Continuing Studies at UFV has always included being responsive to community needs. As the university has evolved, the focus of the Continuing Studies department has evolved too, with a stronger emphasis on job training, upgrading, and retraining, while still paying attention to our communities’ cultural and social development. Thousands of Fraser Valley residents have trained for a new career, taken courses for general interest, attended a forum on a topical issue, tried a computer for the first time, or picked up a new skill through UFV Continuing Studies over the past 40 years. We thank you all, and invite you back, because life is an educational journey and we want to be part of yours.

Forty years of Continuing Studies!

Cheryl Isaac has seen and done a lot in her 37 years with UFV. For most of her career, Cheryl has been associated with Continuing Studies (through several name and mandate changes). There were stints with other areas, but as she retires this spring as director of Continuing Studies, this is the area that is closest to her heart. Throughout her career she has been a strong advocate of community-responsive education. She organized dozens of conferences, lectures, and workshops on issues of relevance to Fraser Valley communities, and programmed countless courses and workshops. Continuing education was a natural fit for Cheryl, who loves to learn new things, meet new people, and introduce new ideas and knowledge to her communities. This edition of the Continuing Studies brochure is dedicated to Cheryl.

endodontic AdvancesEndodontics has come a long ways since its origins as a specialty in the 1960s. Advances in micro-biology, electron microscopy, and digital imaging with the cone beam CT have forever altered our understanding of the root canal system and our abilities to treat both conventionally and surgically what we can now see like never before. From a biological standpoint, the goal of endodontic therapy is to maintain a healthy pulp whenever possible, remove irreversibly inflamed pulps and the sources of irritation, and disinfect the canal system if contaminated. In cases of trauma or with incomplete tooth development, the goal shifts to re-establishing a healthy pulp or inducing growth of a new pulp complex capable of continued dentin development.

With regenerative procedures emerging in all aspects of dental practice, this lecture will address advances in understanding of this pulpal regeneration, rationale behind current techniques and protocols, as well as case selection and expectations.

A Stephen Leacock Classic: Arcadian Adventures with the Idle RichTues, Jan 28Ron Dart, Philosophy and Political Science, UFVThis year is the 100th anniversary of Leacock’s 1914 classic soft Swiftian satire, Arcadian Adventures with the Idle Rich. Leacock is known for his gentle humour, but in this novel, Leacock writes with a more serious Dickensian political bite. The discussion will reflect upon the content of the novel and its abiding significance for Canada and beyond.

Getting to Know our UniversityThurs, Jan 30Dr. Mark Evered, President, UFVCommunity engagement and partnerships are hallmarks of today’s universities; the “ivory tower” is long gone. How is this seen in our own institute of higher learning? What can we expect to see in the future? Dr. Evered will speak about UFV’s historical development, its values, and its strategic goals.

Oil Sands and Fish CellsTues, Feb 4Dr. Lucy Lee, Dean, Faculty of Science, UFVA vital part of the oil sands extraction process is reclamation of the affected waters. These reclamation projects require rapid and reliable toxicity assessment, but conventional toxicity tests using whole animals are relatively slow, costly, and often subjective, and also require the sacrifice of test organisms. A non-lethal alternative, using fish cell lines, has been developed for potential use in supporting oil sands reclamation planning. An interesting overview of the oil sands, environmental monitoring, and remediation strategies, presented from a cell biologist’s point of view.

Abbotsford Hospice Society and its Role in our CommunityThurs, Feb 6Marion Keys, Donor Relations and Development Manager, AHSAn update on Holmberg House, the first adult hospice residence in Abbotsford, which will

bring 24/7 comprehensive care services to patients, their families, and friends. Hear more about the work that the Hospice Society has done, and continues to do, in the 25 years it has served the community.

Forestry from Boston Bar to Manning Park to Bowen IslandTues, Feb 11Jack Sweeten, Ministry of Forests, Lands & Natural Resource OperationsBritish Columbia’s forests cover much of our territory and play a huge part in our economy. Stewardship of this mighty resource has many faces -- taking in silviculture and reforestation, fire protection, forest health and recreation. Jack Sweeten draws on his 22 years as a provincial government forester to throw new light on the land around us.

The Pilgrim Goes NorthThurs, Feb 13Rev. Bill Booth, Trinity Memorial United ChurchTradition tells us that in the 6th century, St Columba arrived on the shores of Iona from Ireland, and introduced the Scots to Christianity. Fifteen hundred years later, Bill Booth spent six weeks volunteering with the Iona Community, a residential Christian ecumenical community living in a rebuilt 12th century abbey, and devoting himself to peace and social justice. Bill will also continue the story, related last year, of his pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela in Spain.

Castro’s Early CubaTues, Feb 18Barbara StrachanSo close, and yet so different — Cuba remains not just a tourist destination, but one of our most interesting neighbours. Barbara has spent extensive time there, including the early days of Fidel Castro’s revolution, and will share her photos and memories.

The Mystery snd Grandeur of the Mighty Fraser RiverThurs, Feb 20David Giesbrecht This presentation will explore the intriguing geography of the Fraser, and the peoples who have lived along its shores from time immemorial. The Fraser has also been a magnet

for early European explorers and gold seekers. Hear David’s interesting stories about the communities that have developed along the Fraser, and the economic benefits that this river has bestowed on British Columbians.

The Great Northern AdventureTues, Feb 25Patrick Wallace Patrick and his wife Tammy have travelled over 155,000 km in their 30-ft motor home — to Mexico, Key West and Newfoundland, not to mention a seven-month tour of Canadian and American national parks. The jewel of their travel album, however, is a trip through BC, the Yukon, and Alaska, with wonderful natural and historical sights. Get an insider’s view on fishing locations, canoe circuits and important travel information.

Freemasonry: Its History and its Place in our CommunityThurs, Feb 27Bill OveryAll the questions you want answered about Freemasonry but were too shy to ask! Bill, who has been a Freemason for over 35 years, deals first with its history, including its effect, over the last 100 years, on Canada in general and Abbotsford in particular. Then the discussion will turn to “what are we all about today, 5,000 years on?”

About Kidney DiseaseTues, March 4Lois Wilson, Regional Director, BC Branch, Kidney Foundation of Canada Kidney disease describes a variety of diseases and disorders that affect the kidneys. Most diseases of the kidney attack the filtering units — the nephrons — and damage their ability to eliminate wastes and excess fluids. This informative talk by Lois Wilson, herself a kidney donor, centres on the causes, risk factors, symptoms and diagnosis of kidney disease, with a sprinkle of organ donation information.

Daughters in the City: Mennonite Maids in Vancouver, 1931–1961Thurs, March 6Ruth Derksen-SiemensIn the early 1930s, young Mennonite women — mostly adolescents — began to arrive in Vancouver, seeking work as domestic servants. Most had recently come to Canada as refugees from Russia, having escaped the terror of Stalin’s regime. Their desperate families owed a substantial debt to the Canadian Pacific Railway for their journey. These indomitable young single women were pioneers of their community: they broke through the barriers of the “evil city”, the English language, and the upper-class British culture. Come and be inspired by their stories.

Easy Movement for Older AdultsTues, March 11Judith Reeves, Senior Exercise SpecialistWinter is on the way out! It’s time for a spring tune-up. Find out how to promote body and brain health the easy way! Learn about fall prevention, the best way to get out of a chair (without hurting your knees) and how to reach the top shelf in this enjoyable session on exercise for the older adult.

Life in a Warming World — The Social and Ecological Consequences of Climate ChangeThurs, March 13Margaret EvansHurricanes Katrina and Sandy, Typhoon Haiyan, Arctic ice melt, rising seas, tornadoes in Ontario, severe flooding in Alberta, wildlife species on the move northward and upward, plant invasions, acidic oceans and the explosion of jellyfish numbers. As the world warms and we are impacted by extreme weather events, life around us is adapting and changing to cope with a rapidly shifting climate that we are challenged to mitigate. What are we facing and what are the consequences of climate change?

The “Medication Trap”: How the Mental Healthcare System Creates HomelessnessTues, March 18Peter Raabe, Philosophy Instructor, UFVMany individuals diagnosed as suffering from mental illnesses are faced with a “Catch-22” situation in their treatment. They must accept having their lives controlled by the mental health care system or face having their financial support cut off. Many choose to live in their definition of “freedom” over government-financed housing, medications, and control of their lives. Homelessness “by choice” is often the result. But is this really a choice? A thought-provoking discussion of a many-sided issue.

The Man Who Filmed NessieThurs, March 20Angus DinsdaleOver a period of 27 years Tim Dinsdale undertook 57 monster-hunting expeditions. His quest at Loch Ness was to prove once and for all the existence of an amazing animal, new to science. His son Angus will tell the story of a family man who had the courage to follow his unconventional passion and whose goal was simply to prove “the truth for truth’s sake.”

Trace Remains: Survival Cannibalism and the Franklin ExpeditionTues, March 25Heather Davis-Fisch, English and Theatre Instructor, UFVWhen Sir John Franklin’s 1845 expedition in search of a Northwest Passage disappeared in the central Arctic, it left few physical traces but a remarkable archive of performative remains. Allegations that survival cannibalism occurred among the expedition’s final survivors were vehemently denied by Charles Dickens, but preserved in Inuit oral histories of finding human remains at macabre campsites. Today’s talk points to the remarkable power of performance to preserve cultural memory, but also reveals how this power can be dangerous.

Bee Colony Collapse and the Effect on our Berry CropsThurs, March 27Tom Baumann, Agriculture Instructor, UFVThe vanishing bee populations present challenges to any of the crops that get pollinated by honey bees. Tom will explore the likely causes of colony collapse, and the implications on the crops, as well as potential solutions.

Growing Up in Wartime EnglandTues, April 1Ken BakerWe’ve all heard the “big” stories that came out of World War II. Today, Ken will engage us with more personal memories. What was life like for the kids old enough to understand, but too young to take part?

From (and to) Asia With Love: Journeys in Japan and Mineral Exploration in BCThurs, April 3Jonathan BuchananCanada’s links to Asia — both culturally and economically — are one of our great realities. Jonathan Buchanan gained perspective on both sides of the Pacific — ranging from his experiences as an exchange student in Japan

in the early 1990s (which resulted in his book Inside the Torii Gate) to his current position as director of communications and public affairs with the Association for Mineral Exploration British Columbia.

A Day in the Life of a Driving TrainerTues, April 8Tracey Dyck, Instructor, Valley Driving SchoolFor years, Tracey has been helping us keep our driving skills up to snuff. Now she’s about to retire — and will share with us some of her experiences as a driving instructor. She promises some pretty funny stuff!

The English BibleThurs, April 10Gilchrist (Gilli) McLarenIt’s a story spanning 1,500 years, and as the narrative develops you will meet men who invested their lives, some even paying the supreme sacrifice, to bring the English Bible to a waiting world. A true tale of adventure.

Walking on the National Spirit: A Cross-Country Hiking TrailTues, April 15Patrick Harrison, Biology Instructor, UFVIts tagline is “A footpath across Canada” To that goal, Hike Canada and Hike BC continue to join existing trails and new trails into a network of hiking trails throughout BC, as part of a national network of trail systems reaching from coast to coast.
