Our business evolved from the strength and experience of the region’s leading rail service provider, namely United Goninan, which has a long and rich history, dating back to 1899.
With a strong spirit of ‘team’ and an ever-vigilant safety culture, discover the historic milestones and developments which have contributed to UGL becoming a market leader it is today.
From its humble beginnings over 115 years ago in a Newcastle workshop which employed 12 people, UGL has grown to become the largest provider of complete rail solutions in the Asia Pacific region, and Australia’s largest supplier of outsourced asset management and rolling stock maintenance services.
Creating history
A. Goninan & Co is formed starting out with a workforce of 12. The first employee hired is Edward 'Teddy' Hands, who later becomes the blacksmith foreman.
The first major job is won. This is to build 100 x 8 tonne coal wagons for Rhondda Colliery.
The Howard Smith Company acquires significant shares in A. Goninan & Co.
Alfred Goninan becomes a founding member of the Northern Engineering Institute.
The Broadmeadow site is recognised as having the most modern manufacturing facilities in Australia.
Goninan Bridge Corporation Limited is established to quote on the construction of the Sydney Harbour Bridge in accordance with Dr. Bradfield's cantilever and arch bridge specification.

A. Goninan & Co. is involved with many complex defence projects for the Ministry of Munitions to assist with the war effort.
A. Goninan & Co. employees help the Maitland flood victims by shovelling out mud from homes in the Regents Street area. On most occasions, workers gave up their own time to provide assistance.
A manufacturing agreement is put into place with the US based General Electric Company (GE - Transportation) for Diesel Electric locomotives ranging from 20 to 50 ton axle loads. This collaboration has now successfully delivered over 500 high performance locomotives to the Australian market.
A 200 tonne Basic Oxygen Steelmaking (BOS) vessel is
built for BHP. This is the first BOS vessel made in Australia
and fabricated from steel plates up to 4 inches thick.
The Britain Committee is formed during the WW2 period where employees donate a portion of their weekly pay to buy 'Food for Britain'.

United Group Rail delivered 14 Hunter Rail Cars for use on
RailCorp’s Newcastle network.
In collaboration with GE Transportation, United Group Rail delivers the first batch of greener and leaner ES44DCi Evolution Series locomotives to Rio Tinto Iron Ore for use in the Pilbara region.
The first of many C44ACi type locomotives is delivered to QR National. This locomotive has now been delivered to a wide variety of customers such as Xstrata, ARG and Pacific National for intermodal and heavy haul operations.
UGL and GE extend long-term rail partnership by 10 years.
UGL wins a contract with RailCorp to refurbish 446 Tangara passenger trains that service the Sydney metropolitan network.
UGL commences the successful roll out of the third phase of 74 next generation OSCar passenger trains, on time and on budget. As a show of confidence from customer RailCorp, the original order is increased by an additional 25 units.
Texmaco and UGL Rail enter into a Joint Venture agreement to establish a manufacturing facility based at Texmaco’s Belgharia Kolkata site in India. The JV covers the design, manufacture and supply of locomotive bogie frames and platforms, wagons and wagon components for the Australian, Indian domestic and export markets.

The enduring relationships that UGL has established with many blue-chip resources companies and rail freight operators in Australia as their key locomotive supply and maintenance partner is reaffirmed with significant orders to supply and maintain their freight locomotives for the GE Evolutions Series and C44ACi product.
UGL and Unipart Rail form a Joint Venture to deliver to deliver the requirements for heavy maintenance, engineering, procurement and logistics services for 1,050 passenger cars in Sydney’s passenger car fleet for RailCorp. This contract was previously known as MainTrain and reflects UGL’s longstanding, collaborative partnership with RailCorp which has been built over the last 17 years.
UGL celebrates the launch of EcoRunTM, which is an innovative product developed by UGL, unique to the Australian rail market. It supports locomotive operator performance while improving both their cost and environmental performance. Developed by UGL engineers, EcoRunTM can be fitted to any class of locomotive to assist the driver in obtaining optimum efficiency on all routes across Australia.
UGL and GE Transportation celebrate the Australian launch of the PowerHaul Series Locomotive. The 3700HP AC locomotive is designed to be UGL and GE’s most fuel-efficient and emissions capable diesel-electric freight locomotive. The locomotive’s technical specification will meet both heavy haul and high speed freight requirements across the Queensland and Western Australian narrow gauge rail networks.
UGL secures the supply of thirteen new GE Evolution
locomotives to support Rio Tinto’s Pilbara iron ore
operations and ongoing growth in Western Australia. This brings the total number
of GE/UGL rail locomotives at Rio Tinto’s Karratha
operations to over one hundred and fifty reinforcing
UGL’s market leading position in the rail freight market.
Known for its expertise in maintenance, UGL's Chullora facility increases the Company's production capacity by adding a manufacturing capability which first delivers 19 x 5020 Class locomotives to QR National.
Evolved from over 20 years of fabricated bogie design and manufacturing experience, UGL launches the FlexiCurve bogie; UGL’s premium locomotive bogie that provides unprecedented benefits in locomotive performance, reliability and maintainability. FlexiCurve is a family of bogies for applications ranging from 90t 1m Narrow Gauge through to 160t 1.7m Broad Gauge.
UGL is a member of a consortium awarded the operations contract to deliver North West Rail Link – Australia’s biggest public transport project. The consortium will design, build, finance and operate the new rapid transit service.
MTR Corporation renews its contract with UGL Rail to maintain 120 passenger cars on Hong Kong’s TK Line.
UGL Rail, in a consortium with MTR Corporation and John Holland, secures the contract to operate and maintain Melbourne’s passenger train network. The consortium, known as MTM, is responsible for the maintenance of more than 900 passenger rail cars, and the integrated infrastructure and rolling stock asset management.
Goninan becomes the first rolling stock manufacturer
in Australia to receive international quality
accreditation to ISO 9001 standards for quality of
design, manufacture, refurbishment and repair
of railway products.
Goninan takes over the State Rail Authorities (RailCorp) Auburn Maintenance Centre in Sydney. Now known as MainTrain Auburn Service Centre, the facility provides all component overhauls and maintenance for more than 1500 passenger cars which is the majority of RailCorp's Sydney fleet.
United Goninan secures Hong Kong rail maintenance contract by Hong Kong’s MTR Corporation (MTRC) to maintain and service 120 passenger rail cars in the MTR fleet for works on the first line maintenance (servicing and cleaning) of the120 rail cars, and will operate out of a new purpose-build facility, the Tseung Kwan O Depot. This new contract reflects the strong relationship we have forged with MTRC.
United Group Rail is formed as part of a Group restructure and is the amalgamation of UnitedGoninan and ALSTOM Transport – Australia and New Zealand.
