David A. Reingold, Ph.D.Executive Associate Dean for Bloomington

Professor of Public and Environmental Affairs

When David Reingold graduated rom the University o Chicago

with a Ph.D. in sociology, he was torn between a lie in the

public arena and academia. Hes ound a way to do both.

He served in Washington or three years as Director o Research

and Policy Development at the Corporation or National and

Community Service. There his expertise in research and public

management helped drive the eorts o the $1 billion agency

that runs programs such as AmeriCorps.

At SPEA, his teaching and research areas include urban

poverty, social policy, low-income housing policy, civil society,

and government perormance, and he has served as chair o

the Research Committee or the White House Task Force or

    Disadvantaged Youth.

Our aculty are engaged in public service, serving on boards

and commissions and consulting, he says. They bring all o

that experience and their research into the classroom to trainthe public aairs leaders who will help shape the world.

John Graham understands the challenge that students ace

in choosing a graduate or proessional school when they are

interested in public aairs. A two-year masters degree in

public aairs was a new idea when I earned my MPA in 1980,

he says. His career has shown that its a model that works.

The ormer Harvard proessor o policy and decision sciences

served as administrator o the Oce o Inormation and

Regulatory Aairs in the White House Oce o Management

and Budget rom 200106. He led a sta o 50 career policy

analysts who reviewed major regulatory proposals rom

Cabinet agencies. He also served as dean o the Frederick

Pardee RAND Graduate School at the RAND Corporation

beore coming to IU. His research and policy work haveinfuenced key national decisions.

As dean o SPEA, he values students spirit o idealism and

accomplishment, and the power o the SPEA MPA degree to

provide a variety o career prospects.

We nd that our most outstanding graduates dont just do

a career in government, he says. They move between

positions with government, nonprots, and or-prot

    companies that interace with government.
