What is UID? What is the purpose of UID? What is a Unique Item Identifier? How does UID affect me? What items need to be marked?
◦ New Assets◦ Legacy Items
What marking methods can be used? Metalcraft Products UID Constructs Registering UIDs What UID resources are available? Summary
![Page 3: UID Basics](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022061207/5485d0b2b4af9f6b7c8b4713/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
UID is a Department of Defense mandate that requires a globally Unique Item Identifier to track items throughout their lifecycle.
Additional benefits:◦ Track internal work-in-process◦ Incorporate into existing asset tracking process
![Page 4: UID Basics](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022061207/5485d0b2b4af9f6b7c8b4713/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
Integration of item data across the Department of Defense (DoD) and industry asset management systems.
Improved item management and accountability.
Improved asset visibility and lifecycle management.
Better use of taxpayermoney.
![Page 5: UID Basics](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022061207/5485d0b2b4af9f6b7c8b4713/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
Data elements used to make up a Unique Item Identifier include Enterprise Identification and serialization of each item the enterprise produces.
Enterprise Identifier may include DUNS Number, CAGE Code, etc.
![Page 6: UID Basics](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022061207/5485d0b2b4af9f6b7c8b4713/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
All DoD contractors, suppliers and DoD agencies are required to have a unique Item Identifier on all qualifying items including end item deliverables, legacy items and newly requisitioned government furnished property in possession of contractors.◦ Effective January 2004 on all new contracts
![Page 7: UID Basics](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022061207/5485d0b2b4af9f6b7c8b4713/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
New Assets◦ Acquisition cost of $5,000 or more OR
Serially managed, mission essential, controlled inventory
Serially managed subassembly, component, or part embedded within an item (parent/child relationship)
Requiring activity can determine if UID is required UID requirement is listed in the contract
![Page 8: UID Basics](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022061207/5485d0b2b4af9f6b7c8b4713/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
Legacy Items – two types◦ Government Furnished Property◦ Property in Possession of Contractors
Items are physically marked when going through maintenance or when returned to inventory.
Enterprise in possession of the asset must mark the item.
![Page 9: UID Basics](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022061207/5485d0b2b4af9f6b7c8b4713/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
Direct Parts Marking◦ Dot peen◦ Laser engraving◦ Chemical Etching◦ High resolution ink stencil
On-Site Printed Nameplates and Labels◦ Thermal Transfer◦ Laser Engraving
![Page 10: UID Basics](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022061207/5485d0b2b4af9f6b7c8b4713/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
Pre Printed Nameplates and Labels◦ Inkjet, laser or thermal transfer printed◦ Subsurface printed polyester◦ Photo anodized aluminum
Elements to consider◦ Quantity required◦ Equipment needed◦ Time/training involved◦ Environmental exposure
![Page 11: UID Basics](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022061207/5485d0b2b4af9f6b7c8b4713/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
Photo Anodized Metal/Foil “CRAFTMARK” Polyester Bar Code Labels Ceramic-on-Stainless Steel Nameplates UID Cable Label Black Photo Anodized
![Page 12: UID Basics](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022061207/5485d0b2b4af9f6b7c8b4713/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
Photo Anodized Metal/Photo Anodized Foil◦ Durability – lasts the lifetime of the item being
marked◦ Foil used for curved surfaces◦ Harsh environments
Abrasion resistant Solvent resistant Resists mild acids/caustics
![Page 13: UID Basics](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022061207/5485d0b2b4af9f6b7c8b4713/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
Photo Anodized Metal/Photo Anodized Foil◦ UV Protection – standard intensification ◦ Teflon® on Metal
Excellent paint resistance Temps up to 500°F Greater chemical resistance
![Page 14: UID Basics](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022061207/5485d0b2b4af9f6b7c8b4713/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
“CRAFTMARK” Polyester Bar Code Labels◦ Environment not as harsh,
but product still needs to be durable
◦ Excellent abrasion, chemical & solvent resistance
◦ Thicker adhesive .0035” – excellent adhesion to plastic & slightly oily surfaces
◦ Easily curves around radius surfaces
![Page 15: UID Basics](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022061207/5485d0b2b4af9f6b7c8b4713/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
Ceramic-on-Stainless Steel Nameplates◦ Extreme temperatures
(1000°F)◦ Extreme caustics and acids◦ Protects against repeated
exposure to salt water
![Page 16: UID Basics](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022061207/5485d0b2b4af9f6b7c8b4713/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
UID Cable Label◦ Specialty application
(cables, hoses, pipes, etc.)◦ Subsurface printing – clear
portion wraps around and acts like a laminate
◦ Product construction – relationship of diameter to 2D important
![Page 17: UID Basics](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022061207/5485d0b2b4af9f6b7c8b4713/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
Black photo anodized◦ Laser engraveable ◦ Important for customer to test samples with laser
![Page 18: UID Basics](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022061207/5485d0b2b4af9f6b7c8b4713/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
Helps ensure uniqueness of identifier Contractor must decide what construct
to use and should remain consistent
Construct 1 – Enterprise Identifier and Serial Number
Construct 2 – Enterprise Identifier, Original Part Number and Serial Number
![Page 19: UID Basics](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022061207/5485d0b2b4af9f6b7c8b4713/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
Prime contractors are required to mark parts with UID are also responsible for submitting those UIDs to the UID Registry◦ Registry is software system that acts as a
database and helps the item management system of DoD.
Potential risks of not registering◦ May not get paid – or may slow down payment◦ May jeopardize future contracts with DoD
![Page 20: UID Basics](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022061207/5485d0b2b4af9f6b7c8b4713/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)

UID mark must last the service life of the item – Durability is key!
Enterprise applying the UID mark and assigning the UID must ensure the UID is unique and never duplicated
Enterprise must submit the UID to the UID Registry
