The company is also one of the country’s leading suppliers of denitrification catalysts and was the first company to offer honeycomb catalysts for denitrification, cleaning up stack gases from power stations and waste incineration units. Sakai also sells ozone-destroying catalysts for use in photocopiers and room air-cleaners. The company recently announced that it is stepping up its integrated production from TiO 2 to catalysts. Japan Chemical Week, 18 Sep 2003, 44 (2237), 8-9 Japan: Taihei & Daikin – nanoparticulate titanium apatite Taihei Chemical Industrial Co recently opened a facility at Nara for the production of nanoparticulate “titanium apatite”. Initially Taihei Chemical will be producing 30 kilos per day of this material and all the output will be shipped to Daikin Industries for use in its photocatalytic air purifier. Japan Chemical Week, 11 Sep 2003, 44 (2236), 8 Russia: Omya – PCC The Omya group (headquartered at Oftringen, Switzerland) has announced that it is nearing completion of an 80,000 tonnes/y precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) plant at the Syktyvkar paper mill operated by Neusiedler (part of the Mondi group). The new plant is expected to come on-stream in 4Q 2003. Its commissioning will raise Omya’s total PCC capacity in Europe to 500,000 tonnes/y, all of which is dedicated to making PCC grades suitable for the paper industry. Other notable Omya PCC plants are located at Szolnok (Hungary), Hausmening (Austria) and Moerdijk (Netherlands). Meanwhile, Omya remains Europe’s largest supplier of ground calcium carbonate (GCC), supplied for both paper and non-paper industry applications. Pulp and Paper International, Aug 2003, 45 (8), 12 Saudi Arabia: Astra Polymers & Ciba SC – plastics masterbatch Astra Polymers plans to build a plastics masterbatch unit at its Dammam complex. Ciba Speciality Chemicals will provide the manufacturing technology and will also market the plant’s output. Astra Polymers already operates a 15,000 tonnes/y masterbatch plant in Saudi Arabia, at Al-Khobar. The project should be completed by Autumn 2004. The Stockvik site was originally established by Casco Nobel and it is now run by Akzo’s Industrial Products division. Expancel microspheres have a thermoplastic polymer shell and they are filled with a gas. Neither the identity of the polymer nor the identity of the gas have been revealed. Heating produces a substantial increase in the volume of the microspheres. Expandable microspheres are used as lightweight fillers for rubber products (footwear, tennis balls, etc), plastic products (automotive parts, packaging, plastic lumber, extrusions and mouldings), paints and printing inks. The Stockvik plant also makes unexpanded Expancel microspheres for use as blowing agents in printing inks, paints, plastics and textiles. In a new development, Akzo Nobel has begun offering Expancel microspheres in masterbatch form, including the 098-MB-120 grade, which offers good heat resistance. The company’s paper-based quality control system was replaced by an electronic system, based on Lotus Notes, allowing quick and consistent information updates. Holliday Pigments is now aiming to achieve the international environmental standard ISO-14001 and the international health and safety standard OHS-18001 during the next 12 months. Mr David Calvert (Technical Manager) said: “All the senior management team was involved at some stage with the auditor (URS), but the most important people were the workforce who demonstrated a drive and commitment. The accreditation certainly cements Holliday Pigments’ market position as a quality leader and provides evidence to the company’s customers.î Press release from: Holliday Pigments, Morley Street, Kingston upon Hull HU8 8DN, England.
