    Executive Summary

    1. TheUKTICorporatePlan2010/11setsoutwhatourtargetsareforthisyear,howweintendtodeliverthemandtheresourceswehaveatourdisposal.AllofwhichwillshowhowweplantodeliverourcontributiontotwoDepartmentalStrategicObjectives:

    The Department for Business,Innovation and Skills (BIS):Promote the creation and growth ofbusiness and a strong enterpriseeconomy across all regions,The Foreign and CommonwealthOffice (FCO):Support the British economy.

    2. UKTIhasavitallyimportantroletoplayinhelpingtheUKgrowoutoftherecession.Eportingcanbecrucialtothesurvivalofcompaniesindifficulttimes.Itcanhelpcompaniestoachievegrowthnototherwisepossible,andcanhelpcompaniesutilisecapacityfully,reducingdependencyoncertainmarkets,eposingthemtonewideas,andincreasingthecommerciallifespanoftheir

    products.ThosecompaniesthatcancapitaliseontheseopportunitieswillbebestplacedtogrowandhelpdelivertheUKfromrecession.

    5. TosucceedinhelpingtheUKeconomywemustdeliverandeceedallourtargets,rememberthatquantitywithoutqualityisnotenough,andcoulddamageourreputation.

    6.LatestindependentsurveyresultsshowthatUKTIassisted23,700companiestoeploitopportunitiesinoverseasmarketsoverthelast12months,generatingover3.6billionofaddedvaluetotheUKeconomy.Some90percentofUKTIstradecustomersareSMEs,reflectingtheoverallpopulationofeportersintheeconomy.UKTIalsohelpedtomaintaintheUKasa

    world-classdestinationforforeigndirectinvestment(FDI)withsignificantinvolvementin600outof1,744newinvestmentprojectstotheUKin2008/09.

    7.However,wedidnotdoquitesowellwithourqualityandsatisfactiontargets,whereweachieved76%qualityand75%satisfactionagainsttargetsof80%foreach.Weneedtoremember

    that,inordertodeliverrealbenefitstobusinessandmakearealdifferencetotheeconomy,ourserviceshavetobeofahighquality.ThatiswhyweareintroducingtheImproving ourCustomer Experienceworkshop.Itisimportantforusalltorememberthatourtargetsreflectthesuccessfuldeliveryofourservicestosatisfiedcustomers.

    8.Itwillbeimportanttorememberthatdeliveryofourtargetsnet

    yearwillbesetagainstthecontetofongoingglobaleconomicpressuresanditwillbeachallengeforustoachieveourtargets.Inaddition,wecanepectallGovernmentdepartmentstobeunderincreasingresourcepressure.

    Wemustreadyourselvesforthechallengesofthefuturebylookingatcreativewaystodeliverourservicesandnewwaystodeliverourobjectives,whilecontinuingtouseourbudgetasefficientlyaspossible.

    9.Finally,itisimportanttorecognisethatitisourpeoplewhodeliverourservicesandwhoachieveourtargets.Todothisappropriatelyweneedtogettherightpeoplewiththerightskillsintotherightpostswhenweneedthem.Wewantthemtoworkprofessionallyandeffectively,developingtheirskillsandcapability

    withinaninclusiveculturebasedonecellentleadershipandbestmanagementpractice.Wewill

    continuetoworkonputtingtheICEprinciples(Inspire,Communicate,andEmpower)intoaction.Webelieveoureffortstodatehavepaidoff,butwealsorecognisethatwecandomore.

    ThisplanisprincipallyforallthosewhoworkforUKTItohelpdelivertheorganisationsobjectives,supportedbyasetofmoredetailedGroupBusinessPlans.

    ThisplancoversthefinalyearoftheComprehensiveSpendingReview(CSR)2007period:2010-11.Wewillamendtheplanasnecessaryasprioritieschangeorwhennewobjectivesemerge.

    1.1 UKTrade&Investmentisthegovernmentorganisationthathelps

    UK-basedcompaniessucceedintheglobaleconomyandassistsoverseascompaniestobringtheirhigh-qualityinvestmenttotheUK.

    1.2 Wehavetwoparentdepartments:theDepartmentfor

    Business,InnovationandSkills(BIS),andtheForeignandCommonwealthOffice(FCO).WealsoworkinclosepartnershipwiththeMinistryofDefence(MOD),drawingemployeesandassociatedrunningcostsfrombothparentdepartments,aswellasemployees

    onloanfromtheMOD.Wealsohaveourownstreamofprogrammefunding.FurtherdetailisavailableinChapter7.

    1.3 TherearecleareconomicbenefitsfortheUKofincreasedinternationaltradeandinvestment3.

    However,thesebenefitscannotberealisedinfullbytheprivatesectoralonebecauseoftheeistenceofmarketfailures.ThisiswhereUKTIcanintervene,providingcost-effectivewaysofaddressingthesemarketfailures.

    1.4 Inthecurrentchallengingeconomicclimate,itismoreimportantthaneverthatUKTIhelpbusinesstomakethemostofglobalopportunitiesandmanagetherisksofdoingbusinessinternationally.Eportingcanbecrucialtothesurvivalofcompaniesindifficulttimesanditcanhelpthemtoachievegrowthnototherwisepossible.Itcanalsoallowcompaniesto:
