When it comes to accessing the Brazilian market, fast-evolving regulatory guidelines pose a constant challenge to manufacturers. UL in Brazil is accredited by the National Institute of Metrology, Standardization and Industrial Quality (INMETRO)* to evaluate and test products for compliance with standards recognized by the Brazilian Certification System.

After being acquired by UL in March 2013, Testtech Laboratórios is now UL. That means, UL can now offer full-service, state-of-the-art appliance testing, certification and follow-up services through a single source. This provides manufacturers with the same unparalleled level of technical support relied upon by many of the world’s leading appliance manufacturers, as well as delivering the clear advantage of simplicity and reduced turnaround time.

With the addition of Testtech to the UL family of companies, UL is now the world’s most comprehensive provider of appliance testing and certification services required by Brazil’s safety regulations. Not only that, but UL Testtech is the only laboratory in Brazil accredited by INMETRO to test conformance to all of the IEC 60335 family of household (and related) electrical appliance standards. In Brazil, UL offers truly unique assistance to appliance manufacturers.

At our INMETRO-accredited testing laboratory in Porto Alegre, UL also provides electrical safety and performance testing services for product categories other than appliances, including automotive parts, luminaires and other lighting products:

The presence of the UL-BR INMETRO Mark on a product means that UL has evaluated representative samples of the product and determined that these meet the safety

requirements contained in the technical regulations appropriate to the product’s category and to the corresponding Brazilian certification scheme. Products successfully certified in this manner may proudly display the UL-BR INMETRO Mark on the product package to promote that product’s certification by UL.

PBe – Brazilian labeling Program for energy efficiencyThe Brazilian PBE Program is a performance labeling program coordinated by INMETRO. Within the program, UL is responsible for carrying out measurements that define products’ classes of energy efficiency. UL also performs tests to verify that a manufacturer’s/importer’s initial self-declaration still remains valid. PBE also aims to provide consumers with information enabling them to assess and optimize the energy consumption of household equipment, to select products with greater efficiency in relation to consumption, and to better use appliances. For energy efficiency matters, the label used is the National Energy Conservation Label (ENCE - Etiqueta Nacional de Conservação da Energia).

*The National Institute of Metrology, Standardization and Industrial Quality (INMETRO), which reports to the Ministry of Industry and External Commerce, is the federal agency responsible for implementing national metrology and quality policies.

As a result, UL is now a full-service appliance testing and certification provider for INMETRO, the Brazilian National Institute of Metrology*.
