Introduction:“DualMode”T-8LEDretrofittubeshavebeenincreasinginpopularityintheLEDlightingmarketplace.Theyaretypicallysoldasa“one-size-fits-all”solution,makingitdifficulttosellagainstifyouareofferinga“SingleMode”product.

ThetypicalsalespitchfortheDual-Modetubeisthatthereisnoneedforaballastbypasswheninstalling.Allittakesisaneasydirectretrofitintoanexisting4-ftFluorescentT8fixturewithanelectronicballast,andit’sreadytogo.Andlater,oncetheballastgoesout,youcanbypasstheballastanddirectwire.Therewillbenoneedtopurchasenewballasts.Thismightsoundcompelling,especiallyonalargevolumeproject.

However,theDualModeproductsoftenposesafetyhazardsthatarenotwellknowninthemarketplacebut,ifknown,wouldlikelybeaverysignificantfactorinthebuyingdecision.

POTENTIALRISK:IfautilitydeterminesthatatubeisbothTypeAandTypeB,butonlyoffersarebateforoneofthetwotypes,therebatemaybewithheld.

PROBLEMS– NONCOMPLIANCEIfthedual-modetubeisonlymarked“TypeA”andprovidedwithaULListingMark,thetubeshouldbeinstalleddirectlytotheballast.However,thetubesaremarketedasbeingabletoinstallaseithertype.Inaddition,somesellersrecommendthatthefixturebere-wiredfromTypeAtoTypeBintheeventtheballastfailsatsomelaterdate.

Usuallyinthiscase,thetubeisnotsoldasakit,butasafinishedgood.Thismeansthatnoneofthewarninglabelsorothermaterialsrequiredundertheretrofitclassificationcertificationwillbeprovidedwiththetube.Ifitistheninstalledinballastbypassmode,threemajorproblemsoccur.

1. TheULListingonthefixturewillbevoided,leavingthebuildingownerliableforanyproblemsthatcouldoccur.

2.ThefixturewillbewiredasaTypeBconfiguration,butthelampwillbemarkedTypeA.

3.Theactualwiringmode(single-endedordouble-ended)willnotbeknownbytheenduser.

PROBLEMS– POSSIBLESHOCKHAZARDMaxLiteengineeringcannotconfirmthatadual-modetubeswiththecapabilitytoconnectineithersingleordouble-endedconfigurationscanmeetUL’sshockhazardrequirementsperUL1598C.Itisourbeliefthattheseproductsweretestedwithacertaincircuitdesigninbypassmode,andadifferentcircuitdesignindirect-fitmode.Thiswouldallowtheproducttopassbothtests.Howeverproductionproductsmaybeusingacircuitdesignthatdoesnotpassthetest.Thishasbeenconfirmedbyourinternaltesting.
