ULM, GERMANYLinked and yet divided by the river Danube: the old former Free Imperial City of Ulm in Baden-Württemberg, and the new city of Neu-Ulm in Bavaria. Worth a visit: Ulm’s historic Fishermen’s Quarter, the world-famous Gothic cathedral with the highest church spire in the world, the old lanes and squares; and Neu-Ulm with its unique panorama of the Danube and beautiful parks and gardens. The square in front of the cathedral is a popular meeting place for residents of Ulm. It’s also the location of the marketplace which sells fresh fruit and vegetables from local farms several times a week. Together, the cities form a major cultural centre with many museums, e.g. the Museum of Bread Culture or the Ulm Museum with its collections of important masterpieces from medieval times onward, modern sights like the the ‘New Centre’ and with outstanding shopping facilities.Students in Ulm can enjoy all of the benefits of a university town, taking walks through the historic city centre, relaxing on the bank of the Danube River, and taking exhilarating excursions into nature.Ulm used to be an important city in the Middle Ages as it lay at the intersection of several land and sea trading routes. Today Ulm serves as a connection between major cities in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg. From here, you can quickly travel to Stuttgart, Munich and Nuremberg by train, and just a bit further to Lake Constance or the Alps. You should reserve several weekends to discover all that southern Germany has to offer.
