BUILDINGINSTRUCTIONSBefore starting to build this kit, weurge you to read through theseinstructions. They contain someimportant building sequences as wellas instructions and warnings con-cerning the assembly and use of themodel.We expect that you have some build-ing experience to take on this model.This means, every minute detail is notcovered. This is not a basic trainer.The instructions together with thesimplicity of this kit will allow you toproduce a first class Ultimate .

Begin construction by locating thetwo 1/4-20 x 1” socket head bolt usedto bolt the bottom wing on. Put thebottom wing in place and remove thecovering over the mount holes at thetrailing edge. Bolt the wing down.Next locate the stabilizer and fit intoopening in fuselage. Check alignmentwith wing, it should be parallel whensighted from the rear. It should notbe necessary to remove any materialto achieve alignment, simply pushingup or down on one tip should do it. Ifnecessary remove material from thebottom of the stab saddle on one sideto achieve alignment.

#11 blade, cut the covering about1/8” inside the line you drew andremove the covering. Be careful anddo not cut too deep and cut into thebalsa as this will weaken the stab.Do this top and bottom. Check thestab saddle in the fuselage andremove the covering where the stabwill be sitting. Mix some 30 minute e-poxy and apply to the bare wood onthe stabilizer where you removed thecovering. Slide the stab back into thefuselage and align using the marksyou made. Use masking tape pulled tothe top of the fin and bottom of thefuselage to hold parallel to wing.Use rubbing alcohol and paper tow-els to clean up the excess epoxy.Recheck your alignment and set asideto dry.

When satisfied with the alignment,measure to make sure the stab issquare and centered. Measurement Ashould be the same on both sides andmeasurement B should be the same onboth sides. When stab is aligned, use amarker and draw a line on top andbottom of the stab, on both sides nextto the fuselage.

Locate the aluminum brackets thatmake up the cabane struts. It consistof six pieces. The two long straightpieces are the diagonal supports. Thetwo longer of the pieces with anglesgo to the rear and the two shorterones go to the front. The sharper ofthe two angles are the bottom of thestrut.

Take a straight pin and stick throughthe blind nut inside the fuselage tolocate the holes for the struts. Using the four 6-32x3/4” socket

head cap screws, mount the struts tothe top of the fuselage, short ones infront longer ones in rear. Do nottighten the screws down tight at thistime. Leave them loose until the topwing is mounted.

Locate the two I-Struts and the eight6-32x3/4” socket head cap screws.The I-Struts are identified left andright, top and bottom with smallstickers.

Fit the tabs on the top wing betweenthe brackets front and rear andinstall a 6-32x3/4” socket head capscrew through the holes. Do notinstall nuts now.

Fit the I-Struts in place paying atten-tion to left and right and top and bot-tom. The I-Struts have recesses inthem that fit over the tabs in thewings. Install the four 6-32x3/4”socket head cap screws in each strut.

With the I-Struts screwed in place,install the nuts on the screws thathold the top wing to the cabanes andtighten. Install the diagonal bracesusing the four 6-32x1/2” socket headcap screws and 6-32 aircraft locknuts. After these are tight removethe screws holding the struts to thefuselage one at a time and applythread locker. Reinstall and tighten. This sequence of install and tighten-

ing the bolts will make sure that thestruts are aligned and not understress.

Control SurfacesLocate the predrilled hole for the

aileron, elevator, and rudder horns.Open the hole up with a 9/64” drill.Locate the 6-32 x 2” flat head

screws, #6 washers, and 6-32 nuts.

Install the 6-32 bolt through the ele-vator and secure with a flat washerand nut. Put a drop of CA on the nutto make sure it does come loose.Install the horn bracket flush withthe end of the bolt.

All surfaces are drilled to acceptthe large hinge points. To ensure theproper alignment of the hinges, firstapply petroleum jelly to the pivotpoints and then put 30-minute epoxyinto the holes drilled in the stab andthe elevator. Put a little on both tipsof the hinge point and insert thehinge into the stab and elevatorwhile flexing the surface up anddown and sliding it into place. Thiscauses the hinge points to rotate intoperfect alignment.

The rudder horn is a 3” long 6-32threaded rod. Install with a flatwasher and nut on each side. Use Caon the nuts. Install two horn brack-ets on each side. One faces forwardfor the rudder, the other faces rear-ward for the tail wheel. Hinge therudder to the fin using the samemethod as the elevator hinges.

The ailerons use the same 6-32 x 2”bolt, washers, and nuts as the eleva-tors. Install the horn brackets andhinge all four ailerons using thesame method as the elevators.

Locate the two landing gear legsand the two 1”aluminum angles.Using four 6-32x3/4” socket headcap screws, four #6 washers, andfour 6-32 nuts, mount the aluminumangles flush against the landinggear plate and the motor box sides.Drill two 9/64” holes on each sidethrough the motor box sides and cen-tered up on the aluminum bracket. Itmay be necessary to remove gluebuild up in the corner and file thesharp edge off the corner of the alu-minum bracket to make it fit flush.

Flat part of gear leg must be parallel to center line of air-plane.

Align the gear so the outside holewill go through the center of thealuminum bracket. Align the insideedge of the gear parallel to the cen-ter line. It will be approximately 1/8”out side the line, don’t worry aboutthe spacing. The gear should beapproximately 1/8” off the bulkheadat the rear. Mark and drill the out-side hole. Install the 1/4-20 x 1-1/2”socket head cap screw and secure onthe inside with a flat washer and air-craft lock nut. Just snug the nut upat this time. Do not drill the insidehole yet. Install the other gear in thesame manner.

Check that the flat part of the gearleg is parallel to the center line ofthe plane. You can move the gear byletting it pivot on the one bolt. Whenthe gear is aligned, drill the otherbolt hole and install the bolt, wash-er and nut and tighten. You can nowfinish tightening the other bolt.

Install the axles on the gear legs. Becareful and don’t over tighten thenuts. It looks like a big bolt but thecenter is drilled out to accept theaxle and can be over tightened easily.

Locate the tail wheel spring and cutinto two equal pieces. Bend a loopinto each end.

Locate the tail wheel bracket andalign the bend in the strut at therear of the fuselage. Center themount on the fuselage and drill two5/64” holes at the hole location.Harden the holes by using a couple ofdrops of thin CA in each hole. Mountthe tail wheel bracket using the two #6x3/4” pan head screws.

Install the tail wheel with a wheelcollar on both sides.

Attach the tail wheel steeringsprings to the horn brackets on therudder horn and the tiller arm onthe tail wheel bracket.

side with the wood block. If you havea forstner bit you can drill the 1/2”hole directly, if using a regular drillstart with a small bit and work youway up slowly or grind out with adremel too to prevent damaging thefiberglass. Support the wood blockon the inside when drilling to pre-vent knocking the block loose. If thishappens just epoxy back into place.

Block the fuselage up level on your work bench and fit the wheel pants onthe axles with out the wheels. The 1/2” hole will fit over the nut part of theaxle at the landing gear. Block the wheel pants up so they are level and par-allel to each other. Take a 1/8” drill and mark the loca-

tion of the hole through the pre-drilled hole in the landing gear.Remove the wheel pant and drill a3/16” hole on the mark. Install theblind nut by pulling it into place withthe 6-32 x 1/2” socket head screwwith a washer on the outside. Whenthe nut is seated glue in place withCA being careful not to get glue inthe threads. Put a 3/16” wheel col-lar on the axle, put the wheel panthalf way on and slip the four inchwheel on the axle. Install the outsidewheel collar and adjust both so thewheel is centered in the wheel pant.Rotate the wheel pant into place andsecure with the 6-32 x 1/2” screw. Besure and use thread lock on thescrew.

Cowl Mounting

Slide the cowl into place and markthe location of the landing gear onthe bottom. Using a dremel tool, cutslots in the cowl to fit around thelanding gear. The cowl should over-lap the fuselage 1/2”.

Cut 5 strips of heavy paper 3/4” wideand tape in position on the fuselageso one end is flush with the cowlmount blocks. Make a mark over thecenter of the cowl mount block.

Slide the cowl into position overlap-ping the fuselage 1/2”. Use maskingtape to hold in place. Make sure thestripes are aligned on each side. Letthe strips of paper be on the out sideof the cowl. Use a straight edge andalign the top of the cowl with the topof the fuselage. Make sure stripesare straight from fuselage to cowlon each side. Check the left and rightalignment to make sure it is straightwith the center line of the fuselage.When satisfied with the alignment,use the mark on the strip of paper tolocate the mounting holes in thecowl. Drill a 1/16” hole through thepaper, cowl, and into the mountingblock. Open the hole in the cowl upto 9/64” and install a #6x1/2” sheetmetal screw with a #6 washer. Dothis in 5 places. Make sure firewallis not touching the cowl on top.

Engine mounting

Locate the firewall, motor box cov-ers, tri stock, and top firewall sup-ports.

With the cowl mounted, measurefrom the F1 former to the front ofthe cowl ring. Write this numberdown.

Measure the engine length from themounting plate to the thrust washer.Subtract this number from thelength of the measurement of thecowl from former F1. That number iswhere you cut the motor box sides.You will need to add about 1/8” tothe length of the motor box sides forclearance between the the spinnerbackplate and the cowl ring. Onmost engines the cylinder will bebehind the engine mount at the bot-tom and will hit the firewall if thefirewall is not notched out.

Use a square to draw a line on themotor box sides. Be sure and keep itsquare to the box sides as this willadjust the up and down thrust. Markthe left side 3/16” longer than theright to give the desired right thrust.

Epoxy the firewall in place makingsure to keep it square with the sides.Add the triangle top supports onboth sides and the tri stock on theback side. Drill 1/8” holes 1” deep infive places on each side of the motorbox and pin the firewall using 1/8”dowels and glue.

You will probably need to notch thefirewall to clear the cylinder head.If you plan to use a Pitts style muf-fler you will have to notch the bot-tom of the firewall. Just cut the fire-wall and motor box sides to acceptthe muffler and then box the areaback in with 1/8” plywood with tristock on the inside.

Attach the motor box top coversusing the 10 #4x1/2” screws and #4washers.

You can cut a hole in the motor boxside to pass the spark plug lead andfuel line through to the engine.

Shim the engine out if necessary toget approximately 1/8” clearance.Move the engine left or right and upand down till the spinner back platematches the cowl. When satisfiedwith the fit, use a long drill to drillthe motor mount holes. Remove thedry wall screws one at a time anddrill and install the motor mountbolts.

Measure the firewall and draw aline down the center. Off set thisline 1/8” to the left side of theplane. Measure up 4-1/2” from thebottom of the firewall and draw aline across the firewall. Center theengine up on the two lines. The bestway to get the engine perfectlyaligned with the cowl is to attach theengine to the firewall with #6x3/4”dry wall screws. You don’t have todrill a pilot hole, just put one in thetop and one in the bottom. They makesuch a small hole that you can movethe engine slightly and put anotherone in. Install the cowl making thecutouts for the cylinder head andmuffler and check the fit of the cowlto the spinner back plate.

Locate the fuel tank and hardware.

Assemble the tank with three lines.Take one of the pieces of brass tubeand cut into two equal lengths. Bendthe other tube so it will go to the topof the tank and fit into the raisedportion of the tank. The other twotubes will just extend past the cap onboth ends. Connect the pickup tubeand clunk to one tube. After thetank is installed, the vent line (tubeto top of tank) can be plumbed outthe bottom of the fuselage just infront of the landing gear. The pickupline (tube with line and clunk) can berouted to the carburetor, and thefill line can be routed to a fillervalve, fuel dot or just routed out thebottom of the fuselage. The fill linewill have to be plugged to preventfuel from running out, the vent linemust be left open.

There is a laser cut tank mount fur-nished with the plane. It is markedfront.

Tip the plate on edge and it will fit inthe cut out in the motor box sides.Glue in place. This will place thetank over the CG of the plane.

Place the tank between the holesand use the two 14” tie wraps tosecure the tank to the mount.

Servo mounting

Locate the laser cut throttle servomount and the two 3/8” x1” basswood blocks. Epoxy the blocks to theplate with the triangles underneath.

Epoxy the servo mount to the motorbox side in the proper position to lineup with your throttle arm. Put the E-Zconnector on the output arm of theservo and connect the 2-56 push rod.

Locate the 2-56x10” throttlepushrod and nylon snap link. Drill ahole in the firewall in line with yourthrottle arm and connect pushrod.

Locate the two servo cutouts oneach side of the fuselage just underthe stab. Remove the covering with asharp knife.

Install the two servos with the out-put shaft to the rear. You will needfour 24” servo lead extensions.Locate the two 4-40 x 5” pushrods,four 4-40 nuts, four 4-40 golden cle-vises, and four clevis retainer clips.install a nut and clevis on each endand with the servo centered, connectto servo and elevator horn.

Locate the two 7” 4-40 pushrods andinstall nuts and clevises on each end.Attach to rudder output and rudderhorn. After controls are adjustedinstall the clevis retainer clips onall clevises. Tighten the nuts againstthe clevises.

Locate the four aileron servocutouts in the bottom side of bothwings. Remove the covering with asharp knife. You will need four 14”servo lead extensions. There is astring located in each cutout to pullthe wire through to the center sec-tion. Locate the two 3/4” holes in thetop side of the bottom wing in the cen-ter and the bottom of the top wing inthe center. Remove the covering overthese holes. Attach the string youyour servo lead and pull throughwing. Mount the servo with the hard-ware supplied with the radio with theoutput arm to the rear.

Locate the two 4-40 x 2-1/8”pushrods, clevises, nuts, and retain-ers. Attach the pushrod betweenservo arm and aileron control horn.After controls are adjusted tightenthe nuts against the clevis andinstall retainers.

Locate the two switches, one radioone motor, just below the hatch railjust in front of the turtledeck bulk-head on one side. You can glue a cou-ple of rails (not supplied) across thefuselage in this area to mount thereceiver and two batteries on. TheCG will probably require this area tobe used. You will need an 18” servolead extension to reach the throttleservo, a y-connector to plug in thetwo rudder servos, two y-connectorsto plug in the ailerons, plus two 12”extensions. If you have a computerradio you can plug the elevator ser-vos into different channels, if notyou will need a servo reverser.There is a hole in the balsa just

inside the right rear cabane strut.You can remove the covering andpass the y-connector through. Cabletie the y-connector to the cabanestruts so the two ends are at the topwhere the leads come out of the topwing.

Trim the clear canopy to fit hatch.Install pilot(not supplied) if desired.Canopy should fit flush with the tur-tledeck bulkhead at the read and thecanopy frame at the bottom. Do notglue canopy on with frame off plane.

With hatch bolted in place, put waxpaper between the turtle deck andhatch and between bottom of hatchand fuselage side to prevent gluinghatch to fuselage. If you do not havethe hatch bolted in place when glu-ing the canopy on , it is very easy towarp the hatch with the canopy andthen it will not fit on the fuselage.

use a pin through the holes inside thefuselage to locate the canopy mounthole. Remove covering from hole andattach the hatch using the two 6-32 x1” socket head screws. The blind nutare already installed in the hatch.

Final Set UpThe CG is 7” behind the leading edge

of the top wing measured in the cen-ter section of the wing.The elevator throw should be set at

1” low rate, 2-1/2” high rate,rudder2” low rate, 5” high rate, andailerons 1/2” low rate, 1-1/4” highrate.

The cabane struts attach to the topwing with 6-32 aircraft lock nuts. TheI-strut bolts should be attachedusing low strength thread lock.Regular thread lock may be toostrong and cause the blind nut topull out when the bolts are removed.The canopy should also be attachedusing the low strength thread lock.The cabane struts should alreadyhave regular thread lock on thebolts where they are attached to thefuselage, if not be sure and threadlock them. There is a lot of vibrationwith a single cylinder gas motor andcare must be taken to make sure allthe bolts stay put. Run the engine andrange check the radio. Run it at fullthrottle to check the vibration and

30% Ultimate ARFminutes. Shut the engine down andcheck all your bolts, clevises, servosand linkage. Pull the wing off andcheck all the attach points, jointsaround the motor box, wing holddown block, firewall, and any otherjoints in the fuselage. Check linkageto make sure there is no “slop” thatcan cause flutter.When satisfied atall is secure go fly and have fun.Our models have flown on 4.2 CIDengines both Fox and Precision Eagleusing the Slimline Pitts style muffler. You will need a 5” Ultimate style spin-ner like the one shown from Tru-Turn. We have found the 22-12 Bollyprop to preform very well on theseengines. You should use at least1200mah batteries on both the radioand the engine. Servos should be atleast 70 oz-in or better. We usedFutuba 9151 digital servos.
