Do your research. Know what you’re going shopping for. Make a list or keep a mental note of what specific things you need or what brands youwant to explore before going shopping. Then stick to that. Doing this alone can eliminate the feelings of being overwhelmedand even buying things you don’t need.

Explore black owned brands first and here’s why. Their shade range is typically much more inclusive to darker shades. So, they meet the needs of our unique skincomplexions. Due to our melanin hyperpigmentation, we also need precise shades. We need shades that harmonize with allof our unique skin tones and most black owned makeup products do just that. Listed below are a few black owned beautybrands that I love.

Utilize the resources that the beauty aisle has to offer. Most makeup brands have foundation guides on the aisle, which is a chart that displays each foundation shade, isorganized by undertone, and normally has a picture of a person who matches that same shade as well. So you can get agood idea which shade you are just by looking at the guide. Some brands even have foundation comparison guides, which is a chart of their foundation shades compared to otherbrands’ shades. Those are useful if you already know your perfect shade in another brand and want to find your shade inthat particular brand. These can be found mostly online. So you’ll have to do research to find it. Also keep in mind that not allbrands have a foundation comparison guide either. Brands that do: Huda Beauty, Juvia’s Place, and Beauty Bakerie. Other resources for finding your perfect foundation shade virtually include multiple sites such as, www.thebaseics.com,www.findation.com, and www.matchmymakeup.com. Most beauty stores and drug stores have other resources as well. Sephora uses their unique system called Color IQ, whichscans the surface of your skin, captures the exact skin tone, and then assigns it a Color IQ number. That number is used toproduce precise color matches for lip products, foundations, and concealers. At Ulta, you can try on makeup using itsGlamLab app that lets shoppers browse, filter and play around with products. Target shoppers can virtually try on makeupitems, including various lip and cheek colors via a feature called Target Beauty Studio on Target’s website.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help. The employees at the beauty stores, especially Ulta and Sephora, are literally there to help you. If you are unsure of yourfoundation shade or the right lipstick shade that fits for skin tone, ask. They are there to color match you or give you their“expert” opinion.
