God’s Provisions “ Part 2

‚Anyone who witnesses to the grace of God revealed in Christ is undertaking direct assault against Satan’s dominion."

- Thomas Cosmades

- God’s Provisions “ Part 2

• Overview of the Armor• The Helmet of Salvation• The Shield of Faith• The Sword of the Spirit• When to Expect an Attack

The Amor of God"Therefore, take up the full armor of God, so that you will be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm. Stand firm therefore, having girded your loins with truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; in addition to all, taking up the shield of faith with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God."(Ephesians 6:13-17)

- God’s Provisions - Part 2

The Shield of Faith‚taking up the shield of faith with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one…"(Ephesians 6:15)

This is not a small shield, but instead one that is large and rectangular in shape. Usually 4.5 ft by 2.5 ft and made of plank wood that was then covered in metal or leather, which would be treated to extinguish flaming arrows.

What is “Faith”?

- God’s Provisions - Part 2

‚Faith means not wanting to know what is true.‛

Frederick Nietzsche, Nihilist Philosopher

The Greek word is ‚pistos‛, which literally means ‚trust‛. Greek Lexicons state faith is: ‚something/one in whom confidence can be placed; reliability; that

which evokes trust; state of believing on the basis of the reliability of the one trusted; pertaining to being worthy of belief or trust; conviction of the truth; the

character of one who can be relied on.‛

What is “Faith”?

- God’s Provisions - Part 2

‚Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of

things not seen.‛Hebrews 11:1

Substance: Hypostasis: ‚among the meanings that can be authenticated for‛; ‚a strong claim can be made for realization‛.

Evidence: Elenchos: ‚the act of presenting evidence for the truth of something., proof, proving something‛.

Faith From God

- God’s Provisions - Part 2

Before Salvation After Salvation

"Finally, brethren, pray for us that the word of the Lord will spread rapidly and be glorified, just as it did also with you; and that we

will be rescued from perverse and evil men; for

not all have faith.‚(2 Thessalonians 3:1-2)

"But to the one who does not work, but believes in Him who justifies the ungodly, his

faith is credited as righteousness,‚(Romans 4:5)

"for we walk by faith, not by sight”‚

(2 Corinthians 5:7)

How Faith Protects

- God’s Provisions - Part 2

• Enables true salvation (Rom. 3:28)

• Helps the believer to overcome the world (1 John 5:4)

• Protects from doubt (Heb. 11:1)

• Provides confidence in God (Rev. 22:6)

• Enables us to please God (Heb. 11:6)

The Helmet of Salvation‚And take the helmet of salvation, …"(Ephesians 6:17)

In Paul’s day, helmets were made out of two things: solid-cast metal or leather with patches of metal. Its primary purpose was to ward off blows from a broadsword.

- God’s Provisions - Part 2

What is “Salvation”?

- God’s Provisions - Part 2

Salvation: sōtēria : ‚deliverance‛; ‚preservation‛.

"For God has not destined us for wrath, but for obtaining salvation through our

Lord Jesus Christ,‚(1 Thessalonians 5:9)

What Type of “Salvation”?

- God’s Provisions - Part 2

Past … Present … or Future?

Justification … Sanctification … or Glorification?

Penalty of sin … Power of sin … or Presence of sin?

Salvation here refers to the present and future aspects of salvation. It is the assurance of God’s continuing work in your life and the confidence in the full and

final salvation that is to come.

- God’s Provisions - Part 2

"But since we are of the day, let us be sober, having put on the

breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet, the hope of salvation. For God has not

destined us for wrath, but for obtaining salvation through our

Lord Jesus Christ,‚(1 Thessalonians 5:8-9)

Salvation From God

- God’s Provisions - Part 2

Before Salvation After Salvation

"Among them we too all formerly lived in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as

the rest.‚(Ephesians 2:3)

"But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when

we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace

you have been saved), and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ

Jesus,‚(Ephesians 2:4-6)

How Salvation Protects

- God’s Provisions - Part 2

• Enables freedom from the present power of sin in the flesh and world (Rom. 6:11-14)

• Keeps us focused on the glory that is to come and that salvation brings (Rom. 8:18)

• We are no longer slaves of sin and of the enemy (2 Tim. 2:26)

The Sword of the Spirit‚and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God."(Ephesians 6:17)

There were two possible swords that a soldier could use. One was a rhomphaia, which was a large style of broadsword. The other was a machaira, which was a smaller, shorter sword or dagger that was used more for infighting. The sword referenced in this passage is the machaira.

- God’s Provisions - Part 2

What is “Sword of the Spirit”?

- God’s Provisions - Part 2

Sword ‚of the Spirit‛ indicates its origin; i.e. ‚the Sword given by the

Spirit‛

"For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword [machaira], and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both

joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the

heart."(Hebrews 4:12)

What is “Sword of the Spirit”?

- God’s Provisions - Part 2

‚Word‛ = ‚rhema‛ which refers to the preached Word or an utterance of God occasioned by the Holy Spirit in the

heart.

"But what does it say? ‚The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart‛”that is, the word

of faith which we are preaching … So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of

Christ."(Romans 10:8, 17)

Characteristics of the Sword

- God’s Provisions - Part 2

• Divinely authoritative. Christ refuted Satan in Matthew 4 with ‚It is written‛.

• Imperishable. Jesus said not the smallest stroke in Scripture would pass away, nor His words (Matt 24:35)

• Unbreakable. Jesus specifically said the Scripture cannot be broken. John 10:35

• Has ultimate supremacy. Christ rebuked the Pharisees for putting their traditions over Scripture.

• Inerrant. Jesus said ‚Thy Word is truth‛ “ John 17:17

• Scientifically accurate. Jesus spoke of God creating the Heavens and the earth.

• Historically accurate. Jesus cited Adam and Eve, Jonah, and others as being historical.

The Word of God

- God’s Provisions - Part 2

Before Salvation After Salvation

" For the word of the cross is foolishness to those who

are perishing…‚(1 Corinthians 1:18)

‚but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.‚(1 Corinthians 1:18)

"But He answered and said, ‚It is written…‚(Matthew 4:4)

How the Sword Protects

- God’s Provisions - Part 2

• Source of truth that defeats the enemy’s lies (Matt. 4; Luke 4)

• Keeps the heart from sin (Ps. 119:11)

• Trains the saints in righteousness (2 Tim. 3:16-17)

• Able to correctly judge the thoughts and intentions of each heart (Heb. 4:12)

• Helps the believer discern between the truly saved and the truly lost (John 8:47)

‚And the devil who deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are also; and they will be tormented day and

night forever and ever. Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat upon it, from whose presence earth and

heaven fled away, and no place was found for them. And I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and books were opened; and another book was opened, which is the book of life; and the dead were

judged from the things which were written in the books, according to their deeds. And the sea gave up the dead which were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead which were in them; and they were judged, every one of them according to their deeds. Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. And if anyone’s name was not found

written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.‚

(Revelation 20:7-15)

- God’s Provisions - Part 2

"Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth passed away, and there is no longer any sea. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, made ready as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne, saying, ‚Behold, the tabernacle of God is

among men, and He will dwell among them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself will be among them, and He will wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there will

no longer be any death; there will no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain; the first things have passed away.‛ And He who sits on the throne said, ‚Behold, I am making all things new.‛ And He said, ‚Write, for these words are faithful and true.‛

(Revelation 21:1-5)

- God’s Provisions - Part 2

‚Rise up, O Lord! And let Your enemies be scattered, And let those who hate You flee before

You.‛(Numbers 10:35)

- God’s Provisions - Part 2

‚If I profess with the loudest voice and the clearest exposition every portion of truth of God except precisely that point which the world and the devil are at that

moment attacking, I am not confessing Christ, however boldly I may be

professing Christ. Where the battle rages, there the loyalty of the soldier

is proved‛.- Martin Luther
